Call for Papers Special issue of Feminist Encounters on ‘Digital Activisms and Intersectionality in Context.’ Spring 2026 In the past two decades, there has been a great deal of visibility for marginalised populations from many parts of the world via social media platforms (whether through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Tumblr, YouTube, and other platforms). We have seen protest movements focused on gender, race and caste issues, for instance, utilising these privately-owned communication technology infrastructures to build networks, reach global audiences, and demonstrate the influence of digital "publics," "contrapublics," "alternetworks," "counterpublics," and so on. At the same time, these platforms are equally accessible to trolls and groups that use them to spread hate speech, fake news, propaganda, misinformation, and divisive rhetoric in the name of freedom of speech. Misogyny and cooptation of feminist languages of choice happens side-by-side with brand-feminisms and feminist activist callouts. Oppressive governments also use social media surveillance to silence dissent, enforce bans, and suppress opposition voices. In this seemingly chaotic digital space, activists, influencers, and advocates attempt to simultaneously speak to their local, regional, national audiences while broadcasting outwards transnationally to garner solidarity and support. These outcries, callouts, and protests in digital publics create nuanced awareness around the particularities of social inequalities in the regions from which they originate. Therefore, we invite submissions that examine the cultural and political contexts of digital activism and how they shape practices, strategies, and considerations of activism and online engagement. We welcome papers that nuance intersectionality as theory or method and those that deploy situated, contextual, intersectionalities to flesh out how activisms and solidarities can be forged based on shifting temporal, social, and geopolitical dynamics. We encourage contributors to deep-dive into how digital activisms conceptualise intersectionality within and beyond activists' contexts and the nuances made visible in activists' use of intersectionality as critical praxis or analytical strategy. While this is not a mandatory condition for submitted papers, we welcome co-authorship across an academic-activist spectrum, caste contexts, racial contexts, or global north and global south contexts. We also encourage submitting authors to explain how these collaborations occurred. Dear all, I am writing as part of the editorial board of Digital Culture and Education<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/> (DCE) as we enter our 5th year running the journal. In that time we have put out 6 standard issues of the journal (including our latest ongoing edition<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/volume-14-4>), 4 special issues, and our COVID conversations<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/covid-19-conversations> with researchers from around the world. In this time we have tried to play with the form and format of journal articles, and continue to push for new and creative ways of sharing research. For example, our special issue exploring 'shelfies'<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/volume-14-2> played around with the format and form of selfies and shelfies, producing exciting and thought-provoking art, writing, and audio recordings. As a proudly fully free and open access journal we believe in the importance of developing and challenging academic writing and scholarship, and in highlighting thoughtful and engaging work around the overlaps between technology, education, and cultural issues. This is only possible with the support of the team around us, and with the continued support of our associate editors and the excellent community of digital researchers as a whole. With this in mind we are currently seeking statements of interest in joining the board of DCE as associate editor. The success of DCE is dependent upon the high quality of its papers and its reviewers, upon its relevance to leading researchers and professionals in the field as an important site for publishing and encountering new work, and its capacity to nurture new and emerging scholarship, ideas and practice. This is a collaborative endeavour in which the editorial board plays a critical role. As associate editors we would invite you to: * Continue to improve the quality of papers published in DCE through regular, high quality reviewing for the journal - We are aiming to ask associate editors to review at least two papers per year. * To develop the field by proposing and taking a lead in editing special issues in emerging areas of interest. We have been notably successful in this area over the past 5 years, with another special issue currently in the works, and would be keen to work with you on issues you are interested in pitching. * To share in the debate as to the futures of the field and of the journal, and to provide constructive challenge and advice to the editors by joining at least one editorial board meeting per year. * To broaden and encourage the community of scholars contributing to DCE by actively promoting the journal to colleagues and within professional communities, including via social media (where appropriate) * To generate engagement with networks of people in relevant fields by encouraging them to submit articles and special issues on significant topics * To share the activities related to the above fairly across the Board membership Your involvement in DCE is absolutely central to the development of the journal, and we hope to the development of the field more broadly. Does the model perform accurately enough? Is the error rate low enough? Such questions of ‘good enough’ are at the very core of the process of Machine Learning (ML) evaluation and can also be considered a highly political process in the development of ML systems. There is already a growing interest in the political implications of ML in relation to, for example, dataset construction and the political capacities of specific ML models or foundational algorithmic techniques. However, there has been less focus on the politics of evaluation practices and techniques in ML. To further explore this issue, we invite contributions to a workshop on ‘The Politics of Machine Learning Evaluation’ at the University of Amsterdam in November 2023. The aim of this workshop is to collectively engage with conceptualisations and the methodologies of how to study ML evaluation techniques. [1]Labor Tech Research Network (LaborTech) invites submissions for our second annual Book and Graduate Student Paper Awards, and first annual Social Justice Award. *About Us* LaborTech is an interdisciplinary and transnational group of experts concerned with the intersection of technology and labor. We aim to reframe conversations about technology and labor towards issues of power, inequality, and social justice, and incorporate themes of feminism, anti-racism, and transnationalism. We also seek to foster an interdisciplinary, cross-regional, and community-oriented space for discussion, collaboration, and empowerment. For a deeper discussion of our mission, please see the 'About Us' page on our website as well as examples of topics in our decade-long Speaker Series. *Call for Nominations* As part of our mission to promote scholarship and activism towards more equitable forms of labor and technology, LaborTech is announcing a call for three awards -- Book, Graduate Student Paper, and Social Justice. These will honor projects which: - have distinctive intellectual merit or activist impact; - advance the knowledge about labor and technology in the global society; and - address our core focus on labor and technology and which may simultaneously address feminism, anti-racism, and/or transnationalism. *Eligibility* Works from all disciplines and methodologies are eligible for nomination. Nominations are open to members and non-members of LaborTech. We welcome self-nominations especially, but also nominations from publishers, colleagues, and others familiar with the projects. While researchers from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds (psychology, folklore, history, and so forth) have taken up conspiracy theories as an object of study, many contemporary scholars have focused on right-wing conspiracies, such as Stop the Steal (DeCook & Forestal, 2022), QAnon (Bloom & Moskalenko, 2021), and the Great Replacement Theory (Ekman, 2022). Most recently, researchers have interrogated the blurry boundaries between left- and right-leaning conspiracy adherents on topics like anti-vaccination and spirituality (Chia et al., 2021; Griera et al., 2022). A key element of current scholarship on conspiracies is the extent to which social media facilitates their spread (Enders et al., 2021; Theocharis et al., 2021) and/or allows conspiratorial knowledge-production to thrive (Marwick & Partin, 2022). Although the stereotype of the “conspiracy theorist” is a “white, working-class, middle-aged man” (Drochon, 2018, p. 344) people from all identity groups believe in conspiracies (Bost, 2018). For American communities of color, though, conspiracy theories may be a natural reaction to the invalidation of their embodied experiences (Bogart et al., 2021; Dozono, 2021). The same could be said of other marginalized groups in America, such as queer folks and women (Ngai, 2001). In what ways is “conspiracy-believing” a legitimate response to feeling displaced in the public sphere, and perhaps even an attempt to reconfigure a sense of community and recognition (Parmigiani, 2021)? What might we learn by destigmatizing and rethinking conspiracism? What can researchers learn by examining conspiracies taken up by members of different marginalized groups? This preconference workshop is a natural, important succession to recent contributions at AoIR on the topic of conspiracy. We build on the 2021 AoIR panel from Allena Chia and others focused on networked conspirituality and the 2022 panel chaired by Alice Marwick on feminist disinformation, but push the boundaries of conspiracy studies beyond extant work, which primarily focuses on the alt-right, health, and Western understandings of conspiracy (Halafoff et al., 2022; Mahl et al., 2022, 2022; Marwick et al., 2022). We thus answer calls to expand understandings of conspiracy beyond Western epistemology (Mahl et al., 2022) to contribute to a fuller conceptualization of “conspiracy-believing” (Parmigiani, 2021). This workshop, then, explores these questions: What new avenues of conspiracy are understudied when we prioritize the loudest conspiracy theories? What can we learn from other disciplines studying conspiracy? How do conspiracy theory beliefs stem from embodied experience? What are the boundaries of knowledge-production that we encounter when we demarcate conspiracy from disinformation and from embodied experience? Panelists will approach the topic of conspiracy theories from disparate fields of study, including communication, information studies, political science, religion, and African and African American studies; different methodologies; and address such topics as: -Identity and epistemology on conspiracy TikTok, -Gaia.com, a streaming video platform that features yoga classes alongside conspiracy content, -How geopolitical and racial histories undergird particular narrative themes in justifications of ethnonationalist and right-wing discourse in Asian communities, and -The overlap between conspiracy theory knowledge-production and feminist knowledge-production. We invite those interested in conspiracy as it applies to epistemology, knowledge production, technological artifacts, gender/race/class, and reception. This might include early career scholars who are delving into the study of conspiracy theories, established scholars interested in new avenues of research on conspiracy, and researchers at any stage interested in diverse approaches to the study of knowledge production. Attendees will be capped at 30 to allow everyone the option to participate in a robust discussion. We ask that interested attendees plan for a highly interactive event. [This is a reminder for the Call for Papers for the SSN's Oregon Surveillance Studies Workshop - Deadline for abstract submission, June 30, 2023] Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce the Call for Proposals for a Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) conference to be held in Eugene, Oregon (USA) in October 2023. The conference theme is focused on the intersections between media, information, and surveillance. This is a designed to be a smaller conference than the flagship biannual SSN conference, and will be based around a paper-workshop model in which sessions are devoted to feedback of single draft papers, much like the Privacy Law Scholars Conference (PLSC) model. We anticipate having some limited options for remote/hybrid sessions in addition to the in-person conference. The submission for paper proposals (abstracts) is June 30, 2023. Our broad theme is focused on the interconnections between "Media, Information, and Surveillance." Proposals that align with the theme of the conference will receive some priority in the selection process. By framing the conference theme around issues of media, information, and surveillance, we hope to foster connections and dialogue about how approaching and understanding emerging surveillance practices and technologies from media studies, communication theory, information science, and critical data studies perspectives can provide new insights or open new directions for surveillance studies research. For example: How can theories, concepts, and approaches from media studies and the information sciences inform how we conceptualize, study, and regulate emerging forms of data-intensive surveillance? More details: Over twenty years ago, in 2002, Gary Marx presented his ideas about "the new surveillance" (Marx 2002) in the first issue of Surveillance & Society. Examining the evolution of surveillance practices and their increasing reliance on information technologies, Marx argued that the defining feature of this new surveillance was "the use of technical means to extract or create personal data" (Marx 2002: 12). Much has changed in the intervening years, both in terms of technology and surveillance practices, but this definition continues to apply to new forms of data-intensive surveillance today. At the same time, the transdisciplinary field of surveillance studies has matured over the past two decades, bringing together scholars from a variety of academic disciplines interested in conducting research at the intersections of surveillance and society. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scholars from the fields of media studies, communication, the information sciences, critical data studies, and related fields to explore how theories, concepts, and ideas from these fields can inform transdisciplinary research and scholarship into the realities, social implications, and regulation of new and emerging surveillance and data-intensive technologies in society. The Oregon Surveillance Studies Workshop is a discussion-based conference in which each session is dedicated to discussing and providing feedback on a single draft paper. Designated discussants briefly present the paper and provide comments and feedback, after which the author may respond (but does not present or summarize their paper), and then the room is opened for broad discussion amongst, and feedback from, everyone else in attendance. Because of this format, participants are expected to have read papers before the sessions and to actively provide constructive feedback. As such, conference participants have ample opportunities to engage and contribute to the sessions even if they do not workshop a paper (for example, as a discussant who provides commentary and feedback). The conference will take place over two days and will include both physical and virtual attendance options. We anticipate hosting several sessions of the conference as dedicated or hybrid virtual sessions designed to allow scholars who are not able to easily travel to Oregon the opportunity to participate in at least some of the discussions at the conference. However, not all of the physical sessions of the conference will be streamed virtually, so virtual attendance is likely to provide a much more limited array of attendance options than in-person attendance. Applicants must designate on their initial application whether they are available to attend in person or only remotely. The in-person conference will include face-to-face roundtable discussions on both days of the conference as well as several meals and extended breaks to allow for networking and informal discussions to take place between participants. We anticipate being able to workshop at least 24 papers in person, with several more offered in a virtual format. If authors of accepted abstracts do not submit a full draft paper by the Sept. 16 deadline, their paper will be removed from the program and will not be workshopped at the conference. Submission instructions: Authors should submit an abstract as part of their application to have their research workshopped at the conference. Your abstracts should be in English and be between 500 and 700 words. You should clearly and concisely link your ideas and research to existing scholarly literature (and fully reference cited literature in a references section following your abstract). Abstracts should identify the theories, concepts, methods, and conclusions of your paper, and should also demonstrate your awareness and understanding of the existing relevant literature and explain how your work relates to, informs, or diverges from the existing body of knowledge. If you wish to cite your own work in your abstract, you should refer to your work in the third person - for example, "As Newell and Reeves (2023) argued," instead of something like "in our prior work...."
