AoIR Undergraduate Teaching Pre-Conference Workshop

For the third consecutive year, we are offering the half-day undergraduate teaching workshop at the AoIR conference. It will take place on the afternoon of Monday, October 18th. If you’d like to participate in the workshop but have already registered for the conference and didn’t register for the workshop but now want to, you can still register. I’m not exactly sure how that works, so don’t email me about how to add the workshop after you’ve already registered. Instead, contact Michelle, the association coordinator, at ac(a)aoir.org <mailto:ac@aoir.org>. I don’t want to be hyperbolic or overstate the case, but I think that everyone who participated in the first two workshops was happy that they did. The feedback has been tremendously positive. And I’d like to answer here a question I’ve gotten from a few people in the past few years, which is: can graduate student teaching assistants participate in the workshop? The answer is “absolutely!” – we love having you, and that's a great point in one’s university teaching career to join our workshop. In fact, any point in your undergraduate teaching career is the perfect time to participate. So please consider doing so. I’ve included an edited version of the workshop description below. Will Rogers Blvd. Claremore, Oklahoma 74017 holly.kruse(a)gmail.com or hkruse(a)rsu.edu ------- Organizers: Holly Kruse and Kelly Boudreau Teaching is a big part of most of our academic lives, whether we are graduate teaching assistants or junior or senior faculty members; tenure-track, tenured, or contingent faculty; experienced educators or instructors relatively new to teaching. In the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. This workshop endeavors to bring educators together to discuss the difficulties and joys of teaching in, on, and around the internet. Questions for discussion will focus on (but not be limited to): What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? How do we use the internet in teaching when our students don’t have broadband access, aren’t digitally-savvy, and when our institutions do not offer robust technical infrastructures or support? As professors with teaching experience that spans types of institutions, student populations, and institutional support, we understand that there are no one-size fits all solutions to teaching in ever-changing technological and social contexts. The experience of running two workshops has made us more aware of the ways in which teaching loads, expectations of service to students and administration, and institutional terminologies differ around the world. The workshop is therefore discussion/conversation-based so we can all learn from and with one another. This workshop adheres to AoIR’s Statement of Principles and Statement of Inclusivity, which is a commitment to academic freedom, equality of opportunity, and human dignity. This means that in this workshop, just like in the rest of the AoIR conference, no harassment or discrimination will be permitted, and members must commit to the inclusion and recognition of all members. We appreciate the participants in this session arriving with a shared sense of purpose, community, and respect as we discuss teaching today. https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/ Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to respond to a questionnaire so that we have a sense of the teaching contexts and expectations of those attending. We also intend to use that shared Google document as a resource that participants can use after the event, especially because we are asking participants to list helpful classroom resources as part of our session. The workshops tailored to focus on experiences and resources brought forth by the participants and expand on them through discussion. Broadly, the first hour will focus on introductions, outlining the key concerns, questions, and issues resulting from the questionnaire responses. The second hour will focus on participants sharing their strategies, assignments or techniques employed in their teaching practices that center around digital media and internet research in a pedagogical setting. During the third hour, if time allows, participants will work in smaller groups, the topics of which will be determined by workshop participants. Each participant can then join the group that best addresses their needs and expectations. The fourth and final hour will include summation of any group work and discussion of plans for documenting and sharing strategies and materials that were discussed throughout the workshop.

AoIR 2023 Nancy Baym Annual Book Award Announcement

The committee for the Association of Internet Researchers 2023 Nancy Baym Annual Book Award is delighted to announce this year’s winner. Many excellent books were submitted for consideration by the committee and the task of narrowing down the list to one clear winner was by no means an easy one. Indeed, as the committee felt that the two books that made it to the final stage of consideration were both eminently worthy of the award on their own terms, we decided it would also be appropriate to give an honorable mention. Accordingly, without any further ado, the winner of the 2023 Nancy Baym Annual Book Award is T*he Modem World: A Prehistory of Social Media* by Kevin Driscoll (Yale University Press) and the distinction of an honorable mention goes to *Redeem All: How Digital Life is Changing Evangelical Culture* by Corrina Laughlin (University of California Press). Driscoll’s *The Modem World* offers a compelling history of the sprawling BBS culture from which much internet culture emerged. Driscoll’s meticulous yet fast paced narrative of the rise and fall of the “modem world” of dial-up BBSs is as engaging in a readerly way as it is rigorous in terms of research and argument. Moreover, Driscoll’s analytical objective here is not just to recover a forgotten historical moment in the development of the internet and social media, but to present his account of the BBSs as a genealogy of the present that has important implications for imagining and enacting a future of the internet outside of the hegemonic rule of Big Tech. Accordingly, *The Modem World* captures the unwritten, yet crucial history of "alternative" social media as well as the historical dimension of the technology, both of which are badly needed for existing research on the internet and communication technologies more broadly. We note that this is the first time the award has been given to a monograph focused primarily on media history. Laughlin’s *Redeem All: How Digital Life is Changing Evangelical Culture* is a tour de force of research fieldwork on one of the most consequential developments in organized religion of the past decades, namely, the relationship between digital communication technologies and the quotidian practices of evangelical Christianity in the United States. Laughlin grounds her analysis in the ambivalent 20th century history of how American evangelicals have alternatively embraced and resisted the integration of new communication technologies into the missionary work of Christian religious practice. This historical grounding sets the stage of Laughlin’s ethnography of several different sites and spaces of contemporary evangelical culture that embody and perform what she terms the “digital habitus”, such as the suburban mega-churches and Silicon Valley start-ups that specialize in “faith-tech.” The book’s careful attention to the cultural politics of digital technologies within evangelical communities speaks to members of the AoIR community who do interpretive and qualitative work from sociological, anthropological, and cultural studies perspectives. New Resource: The Archival Internet Video Index

All, (Apologies for cross-posting!) I just wanted to share a new resource I've been working on that might be of interest to folks for research or teaching: The Archival Internet Video Index <https://apdame.github.io/vidindex/>. While the name is a bit of a misnomer, the AIVI indexes archival footage of early digital communications and information services in use, ranging from videotex to the early years of the web. I've focused on video in particular because it allows folks, especially students, to see these technologies in use. They're also great for illustrating public understandings of technology at the time as well as contemporaneous corporate rhetoric (the CompuServe/Mickey Mouse Club theme mashup might be my favorite find so far). Please feel free to reach out if you have questions, suggestions, or any updated information for an entry - in almost all cases, I've based what I've indexed on what the poster shared, so some of the dates for when these videos were produced are very fuzzy. Collecting Retweets

Hello Aoir, I am trying to collect retweets of a certain tweet. To my knowledge, the Twitter API does not allow for such a command. I read online that a workaround for this could be to enter the URL of the tweet as a query and use the Get URL command. This ended up giving me the quotes of the tweet and the RTs of the quotes but not not the RTs of the original tweet. Do you know if it is possible to collect the retweets of the original tweet?
