We invite writers, researchers, activists, artists and others together for a day of speculative thinking, talking, listening and experimentation on the topic of AI, race, and art. Hosted by the ADM+S with the VCA Centre of Visual Art (CoVA) and Art & Australia. For Stefano Harney and Fred Moten, study is a form of sociality. It is a meeting with, a brushing against, a bumping up of people, texts, ideas and things. It is the creation of a mutual and unpayable debt; a debt that is 'without count, without interest, without repayment.' As Moten states: study is what you do with other people. It’s talking and walking around > with other people, working, dancing, suffering, some irreducible > convergence of all three, held under the name of speculative practice. This event is an exercise in precisely this kind of practice. It invites writers, researchers, activists, artists and others together for a day of speculative thinking, talking, listening and experimentation on the topic of AI, race, and art. Terms like ‘AI’ are already associated with speculation—speculative fictions, speculative profits, speculative job losses, speculative risks and harms. Art also finds value in its connection to the speculative—speculative practice, speculative experiments, speculative funding, speculative futures. And critical work on race also productively turns to speculation when the empirical facts of inequity and injustice fail to create social change—speculative world-making and speculative methods to realise racial justice. This event combines these different strands of speculation, holding together disparate threads that may gesture to abstract and indeterminate futures but are all irreducibly historical, political, and situated. It focuses on AI, race and art because these are topics that need to be studied, that must be studied because they have implications on such things as subjectivity, politics, inequality, and aesthetics. It takes the form of a ‘ Study-in’, that is, a temporary school that will interrogate AI and race, developing new methods and approaches to study that draw from and feed into artistic methods and strategies. It begins from the proposition that the challenge of understanding race in the contemporary moment requires responses that are equal parts creative, critical, technical, and collective. Through the process of collective study, the event will also build what might be called a speculative curriculum. Here, we take the traces of what Harney and Moten describe as the 'empty shell of what used to be called education' to cobble together a resource that can exceed the time and place of the ‘Study-in’ as an event and can be used by ourselves and others as an occasion for future study. The event is motivated by questions such as: - How are bodies classified, recognised, and operationalised by Artifical Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) systems that are situated within colonial and imperial histories and contexts? - How are group-based differentials—such as race, gender, sexuality—shaped by data-driven technologies and AI systems? - How do these technologies move us beyond understanding race and gender as either purely biological or purely cultural? - And how might contemporary artistic practice help us to experiment, challenge, trouble, blow apart, and piece back together entanglements with technology, embodiment, and difference? Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to the winter school we are hosting for PhD students and post-docs interested/working in the field of the (regulation of) digital technologies: Digital Legal Lab (https://www.sectorplandls.nl/) is organising a winter school “Data, personalization, and the law 2023”, together with the Lorentz Center. The winter school will take place from 4 to 8 December 2023 in Leiden, the Netherlands. Its main goal is to do a deep dive into regulation and policy of digital technologies; concretely, we will explore topics related to how digital technologies like algorithms, big data analytics, and automated decision-making affect individuals, markets, and society, and how regulatory and legal regimes are catching up with the technological changes. We are now collecting the applications and encourage early career researchers – PhD students and post-doctoral researchers – from diverse disciplinary and geographical backgrounds to apply. Decoloniality and Online Extreme Speech Is the global upsurge in online vitriol aimed against vulnerable people a result of social media affordances and the actions of villainous populists? Departing from a technocentric perspective and leader centered analysis, this talk will present the theory of “extreme speech”, highlighting the grave consequences of the “ordinariness” of hate in contemporary digital environments and their deep roots in the enduring structures of coloniality. I will argue that historically reinforced patterns of extreme speech and the varieties of digital practice that animate hate actors pose significant challenges to the optimism around AI-based content moderation efforts. The talk will draw from the chapter “Extreme” in the just published book, “Digital Unsettling: Decoloniality and Dispossession in the Age of Social Media” (co-authored with Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan, New York University Press, 2023) and the article, “Ethical Scaling for Content Moderation <https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/20539517231172424#:~:text=As%…>: Extreme Speech and the (In)Significance of Artificial Intelligence” (co-authored with Antonis Maronikolakis and Axel Wisiorek, *Big Data & Society*). I will highlight extreme speech examples from Germany, Brazil and India. *Bio* Sahana Udupa is professor of media anthropology at the University of Munich (LMU München), where she has founded the For Digital Dignity program with an international network of researchers, policy makers and civil society groups to collaboratively imagine and foster enabling spaces of political expression online. *Udupa is the* recipient of the prestigious Joan Shorenstein Fellowship at Harvard University, European Research Council Grant Awards and Francqui Chair (Belgium). Topics may include, but are not limited to: * Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research on topics subsumed under harmful online communication including but not limited to abusive language, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, and online harassment * Computer-mediated approaches for tackling such types of communication such as content moderation and policy making. * Computational methods for research on harmful online communication, such as network analysis, textual and image analysis, large language models and machine learning. * Resource creation for studying harmful online communication such as datasets, codebooks, annotation tasks, and taxonomies * Theoretical discussions and practical concepts related to countering misinformation and harmful online communication. * Ethical and legal aspects of Harmful Online Communication research. * Bias and inequalities of (automated) hate speech detection, datasets, and analysis methods * Development of communal resources in Harmful Online Communication research Presentations at the poster session can be of published work, in preparation for publication or work in-progress. Submissions are open to researchers from all career stages, including PhD candidates and Master students. Abstracts of up to 500 words (excluding references) should be submitted via email to css.events(a)gesis.org<mailto:css.events@gesis.org> until 30 August 2023 (AoE). ------------------------- PARTICIPATION: ------------------------- PLEASE NOTE:The number of poster presentations is limited, given that it will only take place in person in Cologne. In case of a higher number of high-quality submissions, we may have to limit both the number of accepted posters and the registration to first authors of the posters.
