Dear Colleagues, Please note that the deadline for submission to the Race in Games and Game Studies <https://raceandgamesconf.uwaterloo.ca//openconf.php> conference (Dec 7-8) has been extended to end of day September 29. Race in Games and Game Studies will be a two day conference dedicated to exploring how race impacts games and game studies. The conference will be hosted online December 7-8, 2023 and registration is free. It will feature conventional paper panels as well as plenary discussion panels focused on future directions for research at the intersections of games and race. Additionally, I'm happy to announce that selected papers will be invited for revision and publication in an edited anthology or journal special issue, venue TBD. IEEE GLOBECOM 2023 is pleased to announce the availability of competitive grants aimed at supporting students and individuals with limited financial resources. These grants are designed to promote inclusivity and encourage the participation of individuals who might otherwise face financial barriers to attending the conference. We invite eligible applicants to apply for these grants to facilitate their participation in the IEEE GLOBECOM 2023 conference. A new grant has been proposed by IEEE ComSoc which is open to anyone the IEEE Conference Travel Grant while the others are dedicated only to IEEE Student ComSoc Members. This year GC offers different Grant Categories: -IEEE ComSoc Grant: Supported by the IEEE Communications Society open only for students -US National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant: Supported by the NSF open only for students -Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) Grant: Focused on promoting women's participation in the field. Open only for students -IEEE Conference Travel Grant open to all. Creators benefit from new kinds of visibility and affective economies, yet also complain of shadow bans, seemingly arbitrary limitations on views, and algorithmic personalisation and circulation of content. The intersection between TikTok culture and creator economies raise big questions about emerging features of platformed economies. If you were a friend, colleague, acquaintance, and/or admirer of John Monberg and his work, I hope that you will consider joining me and others at a very, very informal memorial session for John at the conference in Philadelphia at 5:00 p.m. on Friday the 20th of October. John was a brilliant scholar and a warm and kind person, and he was a frequent participant in AoIR conferences during the first decade of the association’s existence – starting with the second annual conference – and well into its second decade. AoIR-L undergraduate teaching pre-conference workshop

There are still spaces available in our half-day AoIR pre-conference workshop on undergraduate teaching, which is now less than a month away. Here’s a summary of the workshop, which this year is being run by me and Kelly Boudreau of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology: Teaching is a big part of most of our academic lives, whether we are graduate teaching assistants or junior or senior faculty members; tenure-track, tenured, or contingent faculty; experienced educators or instructors relatively new to teaching. In the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. This workshop brings educators together to discuss the difficulties and joys of teaching in, on, and around the internet. Questions for discussion will focus on (but not be limited to): What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? How do we use the internet in teaching when our students don’t have broadband access, aren’t digitally-savvy, and when our institutions do not offer robust technical infrastructures or support? As professors with teaching experience that spans types of institutions, student populations, and institutional support, we understand that there are no one-size fits all solutions to teaching in ever-changing technological and social contexts. Participation in the workshop helps us understand the Wass in which teaching loads, expectations of service to students and administration, and institutional terminologies differ around the world. Partly because of this, the workshop therefore discussion/conversation-based so we can all learn from and with one another. #AoIR2023 Best Student Paper & Honourable Mention

We are delighted to announce that the 2023 AoIR Student Paper Award has been awarded to Nermin Elsherif for her paper “The Not-so-revolutionary Facebook: Nostalgia and the return to a centralized state.” Specifically, we selected this paper because of the author's use of multi-year ethnographic research involving largely men in their 60s to examine the use of Facebook to promote nostalgia for an imagined utopian past following the 2011 revolution. This allows her to push back against western-centric scholarship that has largely focused on the “modernizing” potential of digital technologies in postcolonial contexts and digital media studies focus on youth. You will be able to hear Nermin’s paper in Philadelphia on Friday 20 October at 8:30-10:00 am in the Wyeth Ballroom B. We would also like to recognize Ran Ju’s paper, “Lifestyle Governmentality in China: Governing the entrepreneurial citizen subjects through lifestyle practices on Xiaohongshu (Red),” with an Honorable Mention. This paper utilizes multiple methods, including systematic analysis of regulations and guidelines, discourse analysis, a walk-through method, and in-depth interviews with both influencers and users. Using a Foucauldian approach to governmentality and sociological lifestyle studies, the paper examines how the platform Xiaohongshu (Red) “is distinctly tied to a hybrid model of governmentality that combines neoliberal and socialist political reasoning about governance, enterprise, and social welfare.” You will be able to hear Ran’s paper in Philadelphia on Friday 20 October at 15:30-17:00 pm in the Benton Room.
