The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Issue 24: General Issue Issue Editors: Elizabeth Alsop, CUNY School of Professional Studies Cen Liu, The Graduate Center, CUNY Sarah Silverman, University of Michigan-Dearborn The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (JITP) seeks scholarly work at the intersection of technology with teaching, learning, and research. We are interested in contributions that creatively take advantage of the affordances of digital platforms and critique their limitations. We invite both textual and multimedia submissions employing interdisciplinary and innovative approaches in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Besides scholarly papers, the submissions can consist of audio or visual presentations and interviews, dialogues, or conversations; creative/artistic works; manifestos; or other scholarly materials, including work that addresses the labor and care considerations of academic technology projects. Brief Guidelines for Submissions Research-based submissions should include discussions of approach, method, and analysis. When possible, research data should be made publicly available and accessible via the Web and/or other digital mechanisms, a process that JITP can and will support as necessary. Successes and interesting failures are equally welcome. Submissions that focus on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how new technologies play out in both formal and informal educational settings. Dear colleagues, Happy to share this posting for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in my department: The Department of Communication Arts in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in *Critical Digital Media and Design* beginning July 1, 2024. The Department of Communication Arts, located in a research-intensive university, is committed to program objectives <https://uwaterloo.ca/communication-arts/about-our-department> ( https://uwaterloo.ca/communication-arts/about-our-department) providing students with lifelong capacities 1) to examine agency and implication; 2) to support the development of critical and creative competencies; and 3) to encourage a language and imagination for the public good. The department has undergraduate programs in Communication Studies, Communication Arts & Design Practice, and Theatre & Performance, and a minor in Digital Arts Communication open to students across the university. These attractive and growing programs currently serve approximately 200 majors and 150 minors, and the department is in the process of proposing a practice-based graduate MA program. In addition, the Department delivers approximately 130 sections of communication courses to students from several different programs at the University. Presently these sections are offered to students in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Math. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a research field such as Communication, Informatics, Design, Digital Humanities, or a related field, a strong research agenda, potentially combined with a practitioner profile, and demonstrated excellence in teaching. They will support current departmental programs by teaching primarily undergraduate Digital Arts Communication (DAC) classes, will help integrate digital arts practice into courses across the department, and will contribute to the department’s proposed MA program. In particular, the successful candidate will be able to teach DAC 309 (User Experience Design) as well as other Digital Arts Communication courses such as DAC 201 (Designing Digital Media), and DAC 305 (Designing and Evaluating Digital Games). A demonstrated pedagogical commitment to theoretically-informed practice, student-centered learning, and engagement of broad public concerns is required. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in critical humanistic and design approaches to user experience (UX). This includes approaches to user-centered research and design based on principles of anti-racism, feminism, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility to interrogate the perspectives, assumptions, methods, and artifacts of UX Design. Candidates with expertise in critical race, Indigenous, dis/ability, trans, feminist, queer, sustainable, and/or Marxist methods and approaches to the practice and study of UX Design specifically and critical digital design more broadly are preferred. Approaches to digital media arts and production as communication are especially welcome, as is having a high degree of technological literacy, the ability to secure external funding, collaborative potential with other faculty across the department and university, the ability to engage in outreach activities with industry in their area, and the ability to contribute to the growth of the department. Authors Alliance has received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to learn about how academic researchers are using Text and Data Mining (TDM) in their research. TDM is known by several other names in the academy, including topic modeling, distant reading, text mining for Digital Humanities, and textual analysis and data mining. The project examines how academics engage in TDM for their research as well as difficulties (especially legal issues) that such researchers face in conducting their studies. As part of these efforts, we are seeking information from TDM practitioners and support staff to help us understand how they engage in TDM, barriers that they have faced in conducting such research, and ways in which their TDM research could be improved. Dear colleagues, We invite contributions to a special issue *Public participation amidst hostility: when the uninvited shape matters of collective concern *to be published in the *Social Inclusion* journal. Please find more details below and, if you are interested, contact the guest editors for a draft of the Introduction text. *Topic:* Ways of taking part in formulating and addressing matters of shared concern are diverse. The practices people employ to engage in shaping societal orders go far beyond organized formats such as citizen juries or co-production sessions, where questions and tasks are, to a large extent, pre-set. Particularly creative practices emerge in situations when participation is not invited, or discouraged, or even met with hostility. Such situations are not exceptional because even in established democracies pockets of exclusion exist. For this special issue, we challenge authors to consider, among others, how participation is made possible in situations of hostility to participation: What are the consequences of participatory practices under adverse circumstances? How can we understand and theorize the diversity of forms of participation in contemporary societies? Media studies syllabus / teaching ideas?

Dear friends and colleagues, I am teaching some new undergraduate Media Studies courses this year. I was wondering whether anyone would be willing to share their materials or syllabi. As there is probably a lot of overlap between the courses that AoIR members teach, it would be interesting to hear what other people do: Is there a particular textbook that is useful? Is there a set of core readings that is typically assigned in these types of classes? Any ideas for activities that work well in lecture-style settings for undergrad students? Here are the courses that I'm working on: Introduction to New Media: This wide-ranging course covers the contemporary social, economic, and political implications of the Internet. Key topics include digital politics, the risks of AI, data ethics, and misinformation. The aim is to provide students with an understanding of the main contemporary issues regarding the societal implications of the internet while framing these with core theories from Media Studies, Communication, and Information Studies. Economic implications of the Internet: This course covers the impact of the internet on various sectors, including but not limited to, retail, banking, finance, and travel. It covers both practical changes and shifts in norms and theory engendered by the internet. It covers the main ways in which companies adopt and use digital technologies. I’m still in the very early process of designing these courses, so would be very happy for any input so that it doesn’t feel as though I am reinventing the wheel.
