Jones, Ph.D., Northwestern University, Qatar This Forum marks what has been, arguably, a century since the birth of modern Propaganda Studies: the flurry of scholarship that followed as a reaction to the rise of fascist and Stalinist propaganda use in Europe at a time of developing mass media. Propaganda is the deliberate use of organized communications to influence an audience or audiences to achieve political, or other, goals of a propagandist. Among propaganda’s features, the powerful political interests it often serves, and their often self-interested purposes, remain a constant: spreading ideologies or shifting behaviors to advance the ambitions of governments, corporations, political ideologues, authoritarians, fascists, imperialists, and even democrats, across every continent. However, contemporary propaganda and its global contexts have also seen rapid transformation during this century. Firstly, the industries, technologies, techniques and media used have progressed at an accelerating pace, from radio and TV to today’s AI generative media, social media and data-driven microtargeting. Secondly, there has been transformation in propaganda’s sociotechnical, geopolitical and economic and even individual contexts - with important trends for example in the political economy, globalization, professionalization, datafication, personalization and commercialization of propaganda. Together these trends have also shaped newer debates over lexicon (with synonyms including ‘fake news’ and ‘disinformation’ rising and falling in popularity) and advancing theory shifting priorities in the academic field. Propaganda Studies has also evolved from a field dominated by white, Anglo-American and male scholars of security producing its dominant perspectives, toward one that is growing increasingly diverse in its scholars, ideas, and focus - and in terms of region, positionality and epistemology. We thus envisioned this CSMC Forum to consider what we have learned from this century of propaganda’s scholarship and practice, and indeed what we still need to learn. This Forum therefore asks ‘whither Propaganda Studies?’ as we hurtle toward its future. *We are especially interested in scholarship on:* ● Propaganda theory and concepts - building on and incorporating a long history of thought, commenting on today’s concepts, definitions, how can theory be strengthened? How do we understand propaganda in relation to related concepts such as power, violence, manipulation, influence, force, trust, truth, etc. ● What can we learn from the history of propaganda and Propaganda Studies as a discipline? Especially lesser-known or marginalized histories, and neglected perspectives or theory that might have new relevance today. ● What is the role of powerful actors in propaganda today? What are the changing roles of governments, insurgents, politicians, corporations, individual influencers, oligarchs, intelligence firms, legacy and new media industries, and non-profit organizations. ● How do we research and theorize intentionality, paternalism, deception, and diverse motives for contemporary propaganda? ● How can propaganda’s influence be understood and/or measured in a digital environment? What is the role of the public in persuasion? How influenced are we? Audience and user-centered approaches to propaganda. ● How does propaganda relate to other practices of war such as covert operations, political warfare, hybrid warfare, lawfare and cyber-attacks? ● What role does propaganda play in the international system and how does it contribute to contemporary colonialism, global inequality, instability, conflict and violence - epistemic or otherwise? ● How are new technologies transforming the practice, strategies, and impact of propaganda? What is the role of algorithms, surveillance and data harvesting, online anonymity, hacking, digital tracing, generative media, secrecy, transparency, censorship, and social media as a tool of surveillance capitalism. ● Examining the lived experience of propaganda and its differential impacts on social structures, issues, and groups in society who have been historically marginalized and/or targeted - for example: socioeconomic status, urban-rural/global south, race, age, religion, gender, sexuality, differently abled, or Indigenous communities, etc. ● How do we strengthen theoretical frameworks and concepts of propaganda studies to better account for neoliberalism, heteropatriarchy, racial capitalism, globalization and data colonialism? ● How has the political economy of propaganda transformed? Emerging norms, dark money, profits, incentives - practices, violence, scandals, etc. ● What is the relationship between surveillance and propaganda, both in history and today? Troubling AI: a call for screenshots

Gray ************************************************************** troubling AI: a call for screenshots 📸 How can screenshots trouble our understanding of AI? This "call for screenshots" invites you to explore this question by sharing a screenshot that you have created, or that someone has shared with you, of an interaction with AI that you find troubling, with a short statement on your interpretation of the image and circumstances of how you got it. The screenshot is perhaps one of today’s most familiar and accessible modes of data capture. With regard to Al, screenshots can capture moments when situational, temporary and emergent aspects of interactions are foregrounded over behavioural patterning. They also have a ‘social life’: we share them with each other with various social and political intentions and commitments. Screenshots have accordingly become a prominent method for documenting and sharing AI’s injustices and other AI troubles – from [1]researchers studying racist search results to [2]customers capturing swearing chatbots, from [3]artists exploring algorithmic culture to [4]social media users publicising bias. With this call, we are aiming to build a collective picture of AI’s weirdness, strangeness and uncanniness, and how screenshotting can open up possibilities for collectivising troubles and concerns about AI. This call invites screenshots of interactions with AI inspired by these examples and inquiries, accompanied by a few words about what is troubling for you about those interactions. You are invited to interpret this call in your own way: we want to know what you perceive to be a ‘troubling’ screenshot and why. Please send us mobile phone screenshots, laptop or desktop screen captures, or other forms of grabbing content from a screen, including videos or other types of screen recordings, through the form below (which can also be found [5]here) by 15th November 2024. CFP Book on Everyday Democracy: Building Resilience Against Polarization and Radicalization

Dear AOIR community, Digital media, internet-connected and automated scholarly work is warmly invited to this CFP, a shared space where academics and practitioners explore various aspects of everyday democracy, particularly in the context of polarization and radicalization. By examining how everyday democracy interacts with these processes, this book aims to provide new insights into how democratic resilience can be built in the face of polarization and radicalization. Through a broad approach encompassing various societal systems and institutions, the book explores the complexities and nuances of these challenges, offering a deeper understanding of everyday democracy and its potential to mitigate the risks of polarization and radicalization. Interested chapter contributors are welcome to propose chapters that showcase the wide spectrum of research on polarization and radicalization in relation to democratic values. Examples of topics chapters can address in the three respective categories that form the framework of the book, include but are not limited to the following: 1. Collaborative Forms: • How participatory governance initiatives, such as citizen assemblies or deliberative practices, can foster democratic resilience against polarization and radicalization • The role of digital platforms and open government practices can play in promoting dialogue, common understanding and a cohesive society • Ways in which citizen professionalism and public-work democracy can foster everyday democratic engagement that counters radical ideologies and polarization • How collaborative action research methodologies can facilitate depolarization and democratic discourse • Avenues for interdisciplinary approaches (e.g. politics, sociology, and science) to enhance the effectiveness of everyday democracy in counteracting radicalization 2. Interaction Cases: • Cities where shared governance of public spaces foster democratic engagement and challenge local extremism or exclusion • Art and cultural institutions, or local libraries, engaging e.g. marginalized youth in democratic processes • Schools where democratic practices have been implemented, making use of e.g. participatory decision-making and curriculum design • Everyday democratic practices in cities or local communities facing different types of crises (such as inequality, climate change, or migration) • NGOs and community-led fact-checking initiatives aiming to counter microradicalization • Lessons learned from the Dialogue to Change Approach (also known as Dialogue to Action) • The contribution by makerspaces, graffiti, and other art forms in contributing to everyday democratic engagement in polarized communities 3 Research-Based Explorations: • How media and social media shape everyday democratic discourse, both promoting polarization and offering platforms for counter-radicalization and democratic engagement • The democratic potential of local histories and urban movements to reclaim public spaces for equity and inclusion • The impact of popular culture—music, films, and literature—on shaping public perceptions of democracy and radicalization, both positively and negatively • The role of speculative thinking and conspiracy theories in fostering or deepening political polarization • Commonalities and differences in approaches to de-radicalization across diverse global contexts • Feminist perspectives on authoritarian populism as seen through the boundary work in everyday life Submission guidelines If you are interested in contributing to this project, please submit an extended abstract (max. 500 to 750 words) of your proposed chapter and a short biographical note (max. 150 words) by 22 November 2024, to everydaydemocracy(a)lnu.se. Chapter submissions and further editorial and peer reviews will be carried out via a publishing platform. The extended abstract must clearly state the intended analytical goals and empirical/theoretical coverage of the proposed chapter while clarifying how the proposed chapter addresses central themes of the edited volume. If possible, indicate which category your chapter is best suited for, i.e. as Collaborative Forms and Scholarly Approaches, Interaction Cases or Research-Based Explorations. Please include up to five indicative references you plan to use in your chapter. While these references might change along the way, they are useful to avoid potential overlaps among contributors. The targeted academic publisher will be chosen after the selection of abstracts is finalized. All chapters submitted should be original works and must not be under consideration by other publishers. This symposium will launch the Hallyu Tracker application, an AI-enabled data visualization tool designed to map the global dissemination of the Korean Wave over the past three decades. The 19th European Conference on Software Architecture (ECSA 2025) will be held from September 15 to 19, 2025. ECSA 2025 is planned as an in-person conference taking place in the beautiful city of Limassol (Cyprus). SCOPE The theme for ECSA 2025 is “impactful software architecture”. The software architecture discipline has had a critical role in shaping robust, scalable, and maintainable systems. We are interested in learning about software architecture principles and practices, emergence trends and case studies highlighting strategic architectural choices that can lead to enhanced performance, improved collaboration, and long-term sustainability. The overarching question is how these architectural principles and practices, both well-established and emerging, are making an impact in real-world systems, and how that impact is being felt across various domains, from enterprise systems to more novel areas like, e.g., AI-driven or autonomous applications? The Program Committee of the 19th European Conference on Software Architecture seeks submissions of original and unpublished high-quality papers describing fundamental and applied research; new methods, approaches, and processes; novel applications; education and training in software architecture; and experience reports on all topics related to software architecture. We particularly encourage papers that demonstrate that diversity in gender, culture, religion, country, etc. are key factors for success and innovation in software architecture. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Foundational principles of software architecture • Relationship of requirements engineering and software architecture • Quality attributes and software architectures • Architecture practices for secure, explainable, and trustworthy software • Architecture design and analysis • Architecture description languages and meta-models • Architecture verification and validation • Management of architectural knowledge, decisions, and rationale • Architecture patterns, styles, and tactics; reference architectures • Architecture viewpoints and views • Architecture conformance • Software architecture virtualization and visualization • Architecture-centric process models and frameworks • Software architecture and agile, incremental, iterative, and continuous development • Component-based models and deployment; middleware • Software architecture and system architecture • Software tools and environments for architecture-centric software engineering • Ethics, cultural, economic, business, social, human, and managerial aspects of software architecture • Architecture and technical debt • Architecting for sustainable and environment friendly systems • Applying AI and LLMs in software architecture and architecting for AI and LLM intensive systems • Software architecture education • Cross-disciplinary approaches to software architecture • Architectures for reconfigurable and self-adaptive systems • Architectural concerns of autonomic systems • Software architecture applied to new and emerging areas, such as the cloud/edge, big data, blockchain, cyber-physical systems, IoT, autonomous systems, systems-of-systems, energy- aware software, quantum computing, AI-enabled systems • Empirical studies, systematic literature reviews, and mapping studies in software architecture • Diversity, equity, and inclusion in activities related to software architecture PAPER SUBMISSIONS ECSA 2025 seeks four types of papers for the research track: • Research papers (max. 16 pages in LNCS style) which describe novel contributions to software architecture research (submissions should cover work that has a sound scientific/technological basis and has been validated) • Education and training papers (max. 16 pages in LNCS style) that address methodologies, experiences and best practices for teaching and training software architecture • Experience reports (max. 16 pages in LNCS style) that cover innovative implementations, novel applications, insightful performance results and experience in applying software architecture research advances to practical situations and systems • Short papers (max. 8 pages in LNCS style) that present novel and preliminary work-in- progress or challenges in a topic of software architecture research, education, and training. Submissions must have a sound basis, but not necessarily be validated in full. All submitted papers will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process. Papers will be selected based on originality, quality, soundness, and relevance. All contributions must be original, not published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. Contravention of this concurrent submission policy will be deemed a serious breach of ethics, and appropriate action will be taken in all such cases. Plagiarism checking will be conducted and any paper reporting more than a 20% match with published work will be desk-rejected. To note is that research papers, education and training papers, and experience reports that are rejected in their categories may be re-evaluated as short papers only if the committee decides on rejection of the full paper on the basis that it presents preliminary work. The research track of ECSA 2025 supports an Open Science policy. We encourage all contributing authors to disclose (anonymized and curated) data/artifacts to increase reproducibility. Note that sharing research artifacts is not mandatory for submission or acceptance. Upon submission to the research track, authors are required: • To make their artifacts available to the program committee (via a link to an anonymous repository) and provide instructions on how to access this data in the paper; or • To include in the paper an explanation as to why this is not possible or desirable; and • To indicate why they do not intend to make their data or study materials publicly available upon acceptance, if that is the case While sharing research artifacts is not mandatory for submission or acceptance, authors are required to include a Data Availability statement after the Conclusions section in a section named "Data Availability". This statement should explain whether or not data and/or artifacts are available or how they could be accessed (or not). Upon acceptance, papers with Open Science artifacts (e.g., data, tools, etc.) will be invited to upload their artifacts into the ECSA Zenodo community (https://zenodo.org/communities/ecsa) to make them accessible and visible to the ECSA community. Sharing artifacts via the ECSA Zenodo community is required for authors to be eligible for the best Open Artifact award.
