Whether we like it or not, social media platforms have become a key space for youth political expression. Yet young people’s engagement with politics on social media looks and feels different from adult conceptions of political expression: it is creative, making inventive use of platform affordances; it is personal, shaped by young people’s experiences and identities; and it is meaningful to young people, as a space to exert their political voice. This book thus argues for the need to consider the potential value of social media, both as a space for young people to experiment with their political voice, and as a window into the political and social concerns on their minds. Grounded in empirical research on three case studies of youth political expression (the U.S. 2016 election, Black Lives Matter, and climate change) on musical.ly, Instagram and YouTube, the book offers insights into the varied ways young people engage with political issues on the social media platforms most popular with youth audiences. On a theoretical level, the book offers a conceptual framework for analyzing how different platforms shape political expression through the interaction between their affordances, norms, and contents. This empirical and theoretically-based investigation sets the stage for a normative discussion, asking how the forms of expressive citizenship identified throughout the book might bolster—or hinder—democratic engagement. We are inviting scholars who are exploring themes related to any forms of pop culture, and their potential and implications for social movement, activism and resistance in the context of non-western countries and societies, to join our panel we plan to submit to both conferences. Based on our common research interests and the theme of both conferences, our provisional title for the panel is: Taking seriously the unserious in resistance — the subversive force of pop culture in authoritarian/socialist/non-Western states. We'd like to explore how various forms of popular culture—such as vlogs, music, theatre, television, and more— can serve as a subversive force against ideological and political oppression in restrictive, non-liberal societies in non-violent, individual, 'everyday', tacit, and creative ways. Our aim is to emphasise the importance of taking these cultural forms seriously in political and International Relations (IR) studies, beyond their traditional perception as mere entertainment. Our topics currently range across queer digital vlog culture in China, the consumption of foreign pop music in North Korea and former East Germany, and the censorship of anti-Kremlin protest musicians in Russia. Denver, CO Co-sponsored by: Global Communication and Social Change, Communication History Divisions With the emergence of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the 1960s, newly independent nations from across the Global South sought to generate channels and protocols for international collaboration that would bypass centuries-old colonial extractive dynamics. What began as a political project of high level diplomacy soon expanded into an ethos that inspired and guided numerous initiatives in the fields of scientific research, cultural production, architecture, and so on. In short, the Non-Aligned Movement was a major disruptor of the political, economic, and cultural status quo of the mid-20th century, and media and communication practices were key to this disruption. Projects like New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), Broadcasting Organization on Non-Aligned Countries (BONAC), and Non-Aligned News Agency Pool (NANAP) aimed to reconfigure the international arena of communication, from reimagining networks and technology exchange to forging new collaborative practices to respond to unique and shifting on-the-ground situations of decolonizing countries in the Global South. These projects troubled and challenged established logics of the existing institutional apparatuses and research paradigms they relied on. However, the histories of these disruptions have mostly remained unwritten or been forgotten by contemporary scholarship. This preconference aims to examine the conceptual implications and epistemic challenges that NAM disruptions (as well as other forms of disruptions that emerged in media and communication systems of the Global South and are aligned to the spirit and objectives of NAM) continue to pose for media and communication research. How do we account for the varied projects that were simultaneously initiated in and carried out from locations such as India, Iraq, Algiers and Cuba? How does such a fundamentally transnational character of collaborative initiatives expand our grasp of global media histories? What do we make of institutional collaborations that unsettle our understandings of top-down and bottom-up activities? How should we frame the persistence of racial logics that NAM actors faced in the realm of international media governance? And how do NAM’s failures, alongside the simultaneous persistence of its legacies, trouble existing conceptions of media temporalities? We will bring together scholars who are tackling these and other questions to provide a greater depth and geographical scope to media and communication studies’ understanding of the long history of global connectivity. By centering historical projects of media decolonization, we also aim to advance the field’s contemporary efforts to decolonize and de-canonize knowledge production. This ICA preconference continues from two previous preconferences held in Canada and Australia respectively: “Media and Communication Studies in Global Contexts: A Critical History” and “Repressed Histories of Communication and Media Studies.” The preconference will be organized as a set of four roundtables and we invite submissions that address one of the following roundtable topics: * Develop critical histories of the disruptions and consolidations of media industries in postcolonial and non-aligned contexts, with a particular emphasis on institutional and political economic analysis. * (Re)Assess the role of popular icons in the Non-Aligned Movement (e.g. from Nasser and Nehru to Mariam Makeba and Bruce Lee) across various media forms including but not limited to films and newsreels, radio, television, posters and pamphlets, music. * Consider Non-Aligned media practices as forms of anti-colonial worldmaking and knowledge production, especially in their relation to transnational feminist, queer, disability, and other justice movements. * Explore contemporary re-activations of nonaligned visions in response to renewed pressures to align with or against regimes of power in the context of contemporary geopolitics. Conversely, these technologies are also leveraged for investigation of human rights violations as done by members of Forensic Architecture and Bellingcat. How should researchers, scholars, government actors and civil society engage and act critically to highlight, investigate, and prevent the use of AI-based systems in perpetuating human rights violations and warfare and devise critical policies and practices that mitigate harms to society today? This symposium brings critical perspectives from AI researchers, social scientists, investigative journalists, and scholars in International Humanitarian Law (IHL), human rights, Members of Parliament, and NGOs dealing with these concerns. We will examine these aspects in the context of ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, among others globally, from the role of AI for spreading misinformation in war, to autonomous warfare, and investigative journalism to uncover human rights violations. The symposium will also insert the question of technology into its larger social and political context, particularly examining questions such as the geopolitics of technology, securitisation of the nation state-system, and the role of corporate interests in technologized warfare. Our aim is to encourage inter-disciplinary and critical theorizing on such topics, while developing an action agenda for future research and pragmatic societal outcomes. Ryan CFP American Association of Geographers 2025 (Detroit, MI) Organizers: Ryan Burns (University of Washington Bothell and University of Calgary) and Katherine Harrington (National Science Foundation) The advent of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undeniable environmental impacts. In training Chat GPT-3, its parent company, OpenAI, used as much water as an average family uses in almost 2 years (DeGeurin 2023) for server cooling and electricity generation, and each 100 words it generates consumes an average of 3 bottles of water (Verma and Tan 2024). Quantifying carbon emissions produced by AI is difficult, but some estimates show that training a transformer model such as GPT-3 emits as much carbon as a single airplane flight from San Francisco to New York City (Patterson et al 2021), and the cumulative use of such models emits as much as 25 times this amount each year (Chien et al 2023). As of 2022, data centers accounted for about 2% of all global energy use, and the raw amount of energy consumed by data centers doubles roughly every 4-8 years (International Energy Agency 2022), leading some tech companies to secure sole access to energy infrastructure such as rebooting Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (Wade and Bass 2024). These staggering figures underscore the potentially dire impacts of AI on the environment in general (Hogan 2024) and, particularly, undermine global attemps to reduce carbon emissions under “net zero” schemes. To invoke Jevon’s paradox, the remarkable growth of generative AI and its future evolutions could offset any gains from efficiency innovations. The effects of AI's environmental implications, of course, go beyond the natural-physical spheres, as communities can be dispossessed of their access to water (Tironi and Albornoz, forthcoming), indigenous groups’ livelihoods can be disrupted (Lally, Kay, and Thatcher 2019), and labor laws and safety norms can be undermined at sites where key technological component materials like silicon and lithium are mined (Arboleda 2020). Taken together, this means that scientists, policymakers, humanists, and climate activists need to take a broad perspective to contend with AI’s growing environmental costs. At the same time, there are many who maintain that AI is the key to addressing the massively complex “wicked problem” of global climate change (Masterson 2024). Many of the most important tasks rely heavily on mathematical and computational decision-making, such as climate modeling and prediction and optimizing resource management, which AI is better suited to do than human cognition alone. There is also the possibility that AI can reduce greenhouse gas emissions of energy production and consumption (Kaack et al 2022) - particularly within urban settings (Townsend 2018) – and some have even suggested that futher research can reduce the water requirements of AI (Li et al 2023). This panel seeks to facilitate the growing, increasingly broad-ranging dialogue on the socio-natural, political-ecological, and environmental implications of AI. We seek to advance geographers’ understanding of the new spatial configurations of politics, resources, knowledge, and economy with which emerging AI trajectories are aligning. And we hope to deepen this conversation in order to work in small ways toward climate justice in this more deeply compromised context. Among other related questions, we encourage submissions of paper abstracts asking: * Is averting the climate crisis, let alone achieving global climate justice, even possible in a world with increasingly resource-intensive AI models and services? How do we conceive of climate justice within this emergent context? * In what ways are the energy, water, minerals, and manufacturing needs of AI reconfiguring spatial political-economies? * How are researchers measuring, qualifying, and theorizing the socio-natural, political-ecological, and environmental impacts of AI development and use? * Do our theorizations of AI’s ecological implications sufficiently adapt to different use cases (e.g., smart cities or medical imaging), models (e.g., generative AI or climate modeling), and sociospatial context? * How is the growth of AI shifting spatial labor relations, particularly with regard to its need for minerals, manufacturing, domestic and caring labor in the tech industry, maintenance and repair, and workplace norms? * What are the intersections of AI’s environmental implications with other forms of sociospatial difference such as gender, race, indigeneity, social class, state-sanctioned labor regimes, and dis/ability? * How do we reimagine and rearticulate glimmers of hope in this anxiety-riddled contemporary context? How is resistance being enacted? Where are the limits of AI’s ecological harms? How do we collectively act in strategic ways to end AI’s contributions to climate genocide and the unfolding climate crisis?
