New CDT report on Livestreaming and CSEA

Hi everyone, We are excited to publish a new research report from the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT <https://cdt.org/about/>) entitled "Real Time Threats: Analysis of Trust and Safety Practices for Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (CSEA) Prevention on Livestreaming Platforms <https://cdt.org/insights/real-time-threats-analysis-of-trust-and-safety-pra…>." We examine the range of trust and safety tools and practices that platforms and third-party vendors are developing and deploying to safeguard livestreaming services, with a special focus on CSEA prevention. These are critically important given the impacts on children, parents, and their communities. We identified three main approaches: * Design based approaches — Steps taken before a user is able to stream, such as implementing friction and verification measures intended to make it more difficult for users, or suspicious users, to go live. * Content analysis approaches — Various forms of manual or automated content detection and analysis that can work on video, audio, and text as content is livestreamed. * Signal based approaches - Interventions based on the behavioral characteristics and metadata of user accounts. While they can be useful these approaches raise significant concerns. First, there is a general trend to eschew transparency and clarity in how these systems operate and are deployed, ostensibly to prevent bad actors from circumventing them, but potentially to the detriment of survivors, users, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Second, and related to the first point, it is almost impossible to determine how effective these approaches are, what gaps they leave, whether they result in overmoderation of legitimate content, and how well they serve the needs of all stakeholders. Third, these approaches introduce significant security, privacy, free speech, and other human rights risks that can undermine the safety of the minors that they are meant to protect as well as that of users in general. We conclude with recommendations on how to address these concerns. Novice questions on how to extract tweets for China "social credit system" chimera project

Hello amazing community, I'm working with Emilie Szwajnoch on a project to document the birth of the Chinese "social credit system" chimera in Western anglophone countries and we have naïve questions on how to extract tweets as this is our first time doing this and the situation with X is evolving rapidly. I hope experts in the community can help! a. How can we extract tweets in their entirety (text, pictures, and links)? b. If we extract tweets with shortened links, will the links work after extraction? c. Is it possible to extract all tweets posted in specific countries based on an X user's location? Or will we not have a full sample if an X user is not sharing their location (may this depend on countries' privacy regulations)? d. Best regards, Viktor Chagas Fluminense Federal University, Brazil ___ Journal of Visual Political Communication CFP “Dark and Unethical Visual Politics” (Early 2026) Visual Politics has gained significant prominence in recent years due to a series of controversial and unethical uses. Framing political actors, depicting contentious or satirical images, whether to build a positive interpretation or to mock authority, has always constituted a strategic and persuasive repertoire for political communication. Historically, the image was often seen as the last threshold for distinguishing facts from fakes. However the digital environment has reconfigured this status, drawing increased attention to malicious uses of images and their relation to spreading mis/disinformation and biased content. This call for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Visual Political Communication welcomes theoretical and empirical contributions concerned with these contested uses. This issue aims to bring together a body of studies focused on visual research challenges and agendas that emphasize images in contexts that are dangerous for democracy and that may pose risks to trust in institutions, threats to socio-environmental justice, or undermine current epistemic regimes, political opponents or minoritized groups. Manuscripts may present reflections on the dark side of visual politics or focus on case studies from different countries and regions. Topics may include, but are not limited to, discussions on: • Ethical and epistemological boundaries of visual political communication • Methodological aspects of investigating unethical uses of images • Generative artificial intelligence images or political deepfakes during elections • Hateful far-right memes, misogynistic and supremacist troll armies, and their political implications • The image serving anti-immigration nationalism and authoritarian populisms • Apocryphal visual campaigns and coordinated slanderous visual attacks • Critical aspects of the visual politics of disinformation as well as historical and scientific denialism • Fabrication of fake images of non-consensual pornography targeting political actors • Problems generated by algorithmic discrimination in the political arena • Cybersecurity issues concerning state visual surveillance, citizen privacy, and abusive biometric recognition • Controversial military use of computer vision in drones and autonomous weapons for human-unsupervised lethal attacks • Alteration of visual evidence to mislead the justice system or create false narratives Full papers must range between 7,000 and 9,000 words and can be co-authored. Illustrations related to the issue's theme are welcomed, as long as ethical limits for discrimination and graphic violence are taken into account and the restrictions of double-blind peer review are considered. Theoretical papers and methodological discussions are welcomed, but preferably in combination with visual material and empirical analysis of imagery. Comparative studies, historical analyses, and case studies using qualitative or quantitative approaches are also invited. The special issue also accepts proposals for curation of images, including photos, illustrations, diagrams, memes, or cartoons that relate to the dark and unethical uses of images, as long as copyright is fully respected. No APC fee is applied to the Journal of Visual Political Communication, except in case authors want to publish their articles on Open Access mode. New CDT Research Report on Hiring Technologies and Disability

Hi everyone, After over a year of work on this project, the Center for Democracy & Technology <https://cdt.org/>(CDT) in collaboration with Coworker.org <http://coworker.org>and the American Association of People with Disabilities <https://www.aapd.com/>(AAPD) are excited to share the results of a human-centered research study in our new report, “Screened Out: The Impact of Digitized Hiring Assessments on Disabled Workers <https://cdt.org/insights/screened-out-the-impact-of-digitized-hiring-assess…>.” This report centered the experiences of disabled workers interacting with AI-powered hiring tools and other digitized employment assessments and their possible impacts. Key findings include: * Participants reported accessibility challenges and biases in these assessment tools that suggest they can be discriminatory. * Participants doubted the assessments’ ability to test skills, as well as their relevance to actual positions. * Participants found many assessments to be cognitively and emotionally draining, often leading them to feel discouraged about pursuing job opportunities that might involve such tools. In addition to the findings, the report provides recommendations for reducing harm and promoting inclusivity in hiring practices that use or intend to use digitized assessments. Conference call for papers — Histories, Presents and Futures of Media and Communication CAMRI, University of Westminster (Regent Street), 22-23 May 2025 Confirmed keynote speakers Professor Payal Arora, University of Utrecht Professor Nick Couldry, London School of Economics Professor Lina Dencik, Goldsmiths, University of London Professor Guobin Yang, University of Pennsylvania In 1975 the first undergraduate Media degree in the UK was launched at the Polytechnic of Central London, now the University of Westminster. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this foundational moment, Westminster’s Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) invites proposals for presentations at a two-day conference in central London on 22 and 23 May 2025. We invite papers and panels that reflect upon aspects of the histories, presents, or futures of the field of Media and Communication. What lessons can we learn from the emergence, shaping and development of this field? Where are we now and how do we matter? And how can we respond as a field to those future challenges — political, social, cultural, environmental, technological — that we can anticipate? Papers may address developments in the subject area over the past half-century, or assess present conditions and states-of-the-art, or engage with coming challenges. They may also consider key developments, events or moments within media industries and cultural practices in those fifty years that have been important in how the academic field has taken shape and in how it has influenced societies. And while the conference is prompted by the anniversary of the institutionalisation of this subject within universities in the UK, and the opportunity for reflection that this offers, global perspectives and contributions are both vital and very welcome. Submission details Proposals should be 200-word abstracts that outline the aims, methods, findings and conclusions of the 15-minute paper. Abstracts should include five keywords and a one-paragraph bio. Keywords, bio, and any references are not included in the word count. Proposals for pre-constituted panels of four papers should include individual abstracts for each paper as well as an additional 200-word rationale for the overall panel. If a pre-constituted panel is accepted, then all presenters must register by the 30 April 2025 deadline. Full written papers are not required. This event is in-person only.
