ACM COMPASS 2025, hosted at the University of Toronto, invites interdisciplinary research on sustainability with a focus on how computing and moves toward sustainability are embedded in and shaped by specific local contexts—computing in place. Rooted in the broader discourse of sustainability but also open to questioning its prevailing narratives, COMPASS welcomes work that critically examines how technology intersects with social, environmental, and economic systems. This year's theme encourages a deeper, situated perspective on how technological practices emerge as solutions, but also contributors to the complexities they claim to address. COMPASS draws from a wide array of disciplines: computer and information sciences, social sciences, critical geography, environmental studies, economics, climate studies, and engineering. We aim to foster a discussion that interrogates not only the potentials but also the limitations of technology-led interventions in sustainability. This includes research that explores power dynamics, inequality, and extraction—how technology might reinforce or disrupt existing systems. We encourage work from activists, worker advocates, and indigenous scholars, alongside those studying topics such as labour movements, climate adaptation, and the ethics of sustainability practices. COMPASS values research that brings forth the often-unseen political and material consequences of digital infrastructure in shaping futures. COMPASS explicitly promotes multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research and practice that address key challenges for sustainable societies including, but not limited to, equity, health, education, poverty, accessibility, conservation, climate change, energy, infrastructure and economic growth. We also welcome research on the ethics of technology, especially from a critical perspective, that explores limitations and concerns with technology-led solutions for sustainable societies. COMPASS also has a particular commitment to approaches and research that address the challenges faced by under-represented and marginalized communities. The theme of the conference will be Computing in Place. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. We welcome the following categories of papers and extended abstracts: • Technical papers that introduce novel persuasive technology approaches and solutions alongside evidence of their potential. • Empirical studies which seek to provide evidence and explanation of methods, principles and theories in persuasive systems. • Conceptual-theoretical papers which primarily seek to contribute to the general understanding of the field’s core themes and specificities. • Other papers, e.g. literature reviews or experience reports. SUBMISSION TYPES Regular Papers This format is suitable for original research, which is completed work at the time of submission and, regardless of the length of the paper, is a self-sufficient scientific contribution. Papers can be full papers (12 pages, excluding references) or short papers (6 pages, excluding references) in Springer LNCS format, and describe work not presented, published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Accepted papers will be included in the Springer LNCS conference proceedings and be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation. Selected papers will be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal (Taylor & Francis). Extended Abstracts We also welcome extended abstract submissions to showcase the results of already conducted studies where authors do not wish to publish them as regular papers in the conference proceedings but rather present them at the conference for discussions that can shape the final version (that may be submitted elsewhere later). The studies will be also be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation in a special session. Extended abstracts must not be more than 2 pages in CEUR format (including references). Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings, 1 column style, see here). Selected papers in this category, based on their quality, level of timeliness and relevance, and completion, will also be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal. Poster Presentations This format is suitable for descriptions of smaller studies, project outlines, literature reviews or work-in-progress. Authors should submit a 2-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style). Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings). Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Demonstrations and Artefacts The Persuasive 2025 track on Demonstrations and Artefact is intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners from academia and industry by demonstrating or presenting hardware and software products or artefacts, including those in virtual settings (e.g., simulation systems, VR, and games), that range from early research prototypes to mature production-ready systems. The contribution should be the result of original, innovative work, including solving novel technical or research problems, and/or creating novel individual or industrial UI/UX. Accepted demonstrations or presentations shall be presented live during the conference. Doctoral Consortium Papers The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 4-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style) describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings) unless opted out by the student. Workshops and Tutorial Proposals Workshops are meant to gather a number of people to work interactively on an emerging topic and exchange ideas. Tutorials are intended to help people attending the conference organize a related scientific meeting on a specific topic or instruct on a specific practice. Approved workshops and tutorials will be announced on the conference website. Tutorials and workshops will take place during a half- or full-day session before the conference. Her award-winning work appears in top media and communication studies journals. Rauchberg is currently working on a book manuscript about shitposting, platform hygiene, and aspirational labor. Brooke Erin Duffy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Cornell University, where she studies the role of social media platforms in reconfiguring work, employment, and society. Her books include (Not) Getting Paid To Do What You Love (Yale University Press, 2017/2022), Platforms and Cultural Production, with Thomas Poell and David Nieborg (Polity, 2022) and The Visibility Bind: Creators and the Perils of Platform Labor (University of Chicago Press, under contract). David Craig is an Associate Professor of Communication at USC Annenberg, where he conducts research and teaches courses on global and national media industries and creator culture through the lens of political economy, cultural, production, and creator studies. Michelle Beaver has been an integral part of the YouTube team since 2010, contributing her expertise in various roles spanning operations and content partnerships across both the United States and EMEA. Currently, she serves as a strategic partner manager within the North America Top Creator team, managing partnerships with YouTube's most successful content creators. Before her tenure at YouTube, Michelle cultivated her career in the music industry, with roles in artist management, touring, and radio. (2024) Inequality in the Digital Economy. The Case for a Universal Basic Income. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-69718-0 https://link.springer.com/series/16770 *Abstract* This book will make the case for the introduction of a universal basic income (UBI). The structural logic of the digital economy as presently constituted widens inequality and, through its use of automation for increasingly complex, as well as mundane, tasks, threatens jobs. The book will investigate the extent of this disruption to traditional labour markets and of individual livelihoods, and argue that alternative means of supporting people financially, like UBI, can mitigate the digital economy’s most baleful impacts. The book will also highlight the positive social and environmental benefits that would accrue from the introduction of UBI, as unconditional financial support would reduce workers’ anxiety in insecure labour markets, and the expending of valuable resources would be lessened if energy consumption was determined by society’s needs rather than by the requirements of labour markets tasked primarily with maximising employment. CFM—Symbolic Interaction and the Homeless

Greetings! The persistence of homelessness has attracted the attention of symbolic interactionists. Such attention acknowledges the obvious obdurate issues of poverty and inequality, and also keys on correlated issues pertaining to experiential trauma, substance abuse, mental illness, and the lack of affordable housing. Interactionists have also utilized the strengths of the perspective to examine prejudicial standpoints (that stigmatize the homeless), how the homeless manage their lived experiences (and deal with particular impressions), and agency among the homeless as they participate in the construction and reconstruction of their environments. From an interactionist perspective, homelessness is as much a cultural issue as much as it is an economic reality. Additionally, the variegated issues associated with homelessness became heightened in June, 2024, when the US Supreme Court ruled that state and local laws can penalize homeless people for sleeping outdoors. The ruling amplified the problem of interpreting what constitutes public vs. private spheres of existence and, borrowing from Mary Douglas (1966, *Purity and Danger: An Analysis of the Concepts of Pollution and Taboo*. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul), what is considered clean vs. dirty living. The right of the state to penalize those defined as homeless and perceived as out of place triggered a great deal of criticism. However, the subsequent acceptance of the Court's decision (and the enforcement of laws) also seemed, from the perspective of some activists, as a sign of societal apathy. In effect, symbolic interactionists are equipped with theoretical sophistication and methodological depth to tackle issues surrounding homelessness. In addition to conceptual dichotomies (e.g., public/private, clean/dirty, self /other, as well as self and society) an interactionist focus on identities, experiences, and histories (personal, social, and institutional) provides the tools for complex analysis and description. With this understanding, *Studies in Symbolic Interaction* invites submissions of abstracts that address issues surrounding homelessness.
