Hi everyone, we are delighted to invite you to the 2nd annual Summer School in Digital Methods, running 1st-5th July at Bournemouth University (BU). The Summer School will cover several digital methods including: * Website scraping and APIs * Content Analysis, Sentiment analysis and Computer-aided content analysis * Social Network Analysis * AI Masterclass and AI Practice for Research * Data Visualisation and storytelling * An introduction to Predictive Modelling All participants will work on a common research problem through the week, and the goal, alongside learning skills, is to collect data for a joint publication. The course will be led by Prof Scott Wright, with support from staff from across BU including Professor Darren Lilleker, Professor Dan Jackson, Professor Anna Feigenbaum, Professor Rick Stafford, Dr Festus Adedoyin, Dr Michelle Heward and Professor Richard Berger. We will also have sessions on working with industry and some guest lectures. The Summer School is open to both PhD students and early career researchers. Places are limited due to lab size and we will select based on answers to the application as well as an overall consideration to ensure a balance amongst participants. There will be no charge for this event and catering will be provided during the day. We will also offer support of upto £200 to help towards travel and accommodation expenses for non-BU PhD students (max 15). In the context of user studies, e.g., limitations regarding the sample, the external or internal validity should be mentioned and discussed. Track 2: Governance Issues Chairs: Spycher, Iuliia (University of Bern, Switzerland) and Rodriguez, Adrià (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain) This track is intended to cover all non-technical issues that occur during the digital transformation of elections including, but not limited to the following: - Legal, political and social issues of electronic voting implementations, ideally employing case study methodology; - Interrelationship with, and the effects of, electronic voting on democratic institutions and processes; - Cultural impact of electronic voting on institutions, behaviour, and attitudes of the Digital Era; - Administrative, legal, political and social issues of electronic voting; - Electronic voting legislation; - Public administrations and the implementation of electronic voting; - Understandability, transparency, and trust issues in electronic voting; - Data protection issues; - Public interests vs. PPP (public private partnerships). Track 3: Election and Practical Experiences Chairs: Martin-Rozumilowicz, Beata (Independent Electoral Expert, UK) and Spycher, Oliver (Swiss Federal Chancellery, Switzerland) - Present real-world cases related to technology use in elections or referenda, including experiences with implementation, insights and assessments; - This can include cases of actual e-voting, but also wider technology application (e.g., voter registration, results management systems, etc.). Cases may include operation, preparation, observation, lawmaking, case law, political debate, and other relevant subjects. Contributions need not be academic papers, but should be properly grounded and evidence-based. Contributions stemming from or addressing issues in current academic research are also very welcome. Acceptance criteria include relevance for other practitioners from EMB’s, international organizations, civil society organisations (CSOs), or actors from the private sector. Track 4: Posters and Demonstrations Chair: Kirsten, Michael (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany) We invite Posters depicting new ideas or approaches you want to discuss with the community or summarizing papers you have published on other venues but you think are important for the E-Vote-IDcommunity to know and to discuss. A Short Paper (see section on paper submission and proceedings) is requested. If it relates to already published papers, we ask you to provide the information where to find the original publication. Further, we invite demonstrations of electronic voting systems or parts thereof. We request a Short Paper describing the main properties: type of system local/remote; kind of elections the system is intended for, e.g. legally binding elections to parliament, non-political elections within associations etc; support for voters with disabilities; which security properties are fulfilled (incl. verifiability, voter privacy, etc.; how to receive further information about the system, e.g. where the source code is published). Track 5: PhD Colloquium Chairs: Debant, Alexandre (CNRS, France) and Passanti, Cecilia (Université Paris Cité, France) The goal of the colloquium is to foster the understanding and academic quality of PhD students' contributions in collaboration with senior researchers in the field. Further, collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting is supported. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. Each interested participant should ideally submit their research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) in the form of an extended draft using the conference platform. High potential master students can also submit their work to the colloquium. The PhD Colloquium takes place on the day before the formal conference begins. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper Submission Types LNCS style is used for all submissions (see the Springer guidelines at https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu… <https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…>, including templates for LaTeX and Microsoft Word). All papers in the conference will be open access. Paper submissions can be in the following formats: - Full papers need to contain original unpublished research. The page limit is 16 pages in LNCS format. - Work-in-Progress submissions contain ongoing original research. The submission should be max 20 pages in LNCS format or max 10,000 words. Initial submissions are format-neutral. If submissions are accepted, the authors are expected to provide a short summary of their key contributions (max 4 pages in LNCS format). This submission route enables authors to receive feedback on work in progress without pre-empting publication in a different venue (e.g., an academic journal). - Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) Papers. This year we also introduce the SoK paper category. These papers evaluate, systematize, and contextualize existing knowledge. The papers will be reviewed according to the same standards as other research papers, but the emphasis will be on value to the community rather than novel research contributions. The submission should be max 20 pages in LNCS format or max 10,000 words. - Short Papers are a maximum of 4 pages long in LNCS format all-in. In Tracks 1 and 2, such papers have a smaller contribution than a full paper. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proceedings The E-Vote-ID conference publishes two volumes of proceedings. One volume is published with Springer LNCS proceedings and another one is published with GI. Both proceedings are published under open access licenses. Selected Full papers from Track 1 (Security, Usability and Technical Issues) and Track 2 (Governance Issues) are published in the Springer LNCS proceedings whereas some submissions will be selected for the GI proceedings. Short Papers from these tracks, as well as all contributions accepted in Tracks 3 are published in GI proceedings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reviewing All submissions will be subject to double-blind reviews. Submissions must be anonymous (with no reference to the authors). *ISA 5th Forum of Sociology Call for SessionsDeadline: May 31, 2024* The ISA Visual Sociology Research Committee (RC57) participates in the ‘5th Forum of Sociology: *‘Knowing Justice in the Anthropocene’*, organized by the International Sociological Association (ISA) in Rabat, Morocco on July 6-11, 2025. This interdisciplinary and diverse research committee welcomes session proposals related to the theme, and more specifically, session proposals and activities (of about 250 words) that address the role of: *The visual in knowledge production and distribution as well as in challenging dominant societal choices.* How can visual sociology contribute to a better understanding of what is really at stake and shed light on numerous forms of injustice associated with this epoch? As always, *we welcome innovative proposals about aspects of visual social science more broadly: visual theory, methodological contributions, teaching experiences and best practices, technological advances in visual data production and communication, etc.* Sessions can take one of the following formats: - *Paper presentation session:* It is recommended that each session uses its 105 minutes to accommodate a maximum of 4-5 papers (of 15-20 minutes each), followed by 5-10 minutes of discussants comments (optional) and 15-20 minutes of collective discussion. Each panel will have a chair which the panel organizer is responsible for arranging. These sessions will be open for abstract submission from August 5 until October 15, 2024. - *Panel session: *A panel session accommodates several invited panelists who will debate around a specific theme or on current issues of particular importance to the area of research within Visual Sociology. The floor will then be opened to the audience. Members of the panel are chosen and invited by Session Organizers and are not open for general abstract submission. Each panel will have a chair and discussant which the panel organizer is responsible for arranging. - *Invited session:* These are invited sessions with invitations issued by Session Organizers. These are not open for general abstract submission. Each panel will have a chair and discussant which the session organizer is responsible for arranging. - *Roundtable Session:* To accommodate more papers, a regular session time slot may be used for a maximum of 5 concurrent running round table presentations in one room (maximum of 5-6 presenters at each table). Five tables will be set up at the same time and in the same room. Each table will accommodate 10 persons including the presenters (suggested number of 5 presenters). Our RC can organize up to 2 Round Table sessions. - *Poster session: *Poster presentations of research information and results. - *Joint session: *Joint Sessions are sessions organized jointly by two or more ISA groups on a theme of overlapping interest. They can take any of the formats listed in this section. The session organizer is responsible for liaising with the RC57 Organizing Committee and the partner RC/WG/TG. Joint sessions only count towards the session limit of the host committee. - *Author(s) meets Critics:* This is a debate centered on an important recent publication. The author can present their work before commentators discuss their responses. The floor is then opened to the audience. - *Featured or Keynote Speaker:* A session featuring a leading researcher in our field, with a presentation of between 35 and 60 minutes duration, followed by a discussion period. This kind of session can attract more people from outside our group. These sessions are organized directly by Program Coordinators and/or Session Organizers and are not open for abstract submission. - *Other formats:* We invite proposals for sessions in other formats, such as film screenings, publication or mentoring sessions, etc. Please describe the format as clearly as possible. Please note that where required, the session organizers are responsible for arranging chairs and discussants. *Linguistic Diversity* Although English is the administrative language of ISA, the Association has three official languages: English, French, and Spanish. Presentations are primarily in the official three languages. However, RC/WG/TGs are encouraged to support language diversity. If paper presentations are in languages other than English, then it is up to our RC to work this out creatively, given that ISA does not have funds to support simultaneous interpretation. As technology practitioners, we are often believed to have responsibility for the development of technology, yet building of technology is always a collective enterprise. We are inviting the workshop participants to explore the collective, embodied, experiential and ecological nature of technology production with the help of choreography-inspired techniques. The first part of the workshop will be devoted to the sharing of participants’ submissions. In the second part, with the help of body-based exercises, we will articulate the discomforts of building and researching technology in the age of surveillance capitalism. The main workshop goal is to facilitate community building among the tech practitioners and researchers, who share the experience of discomfort around topics such as ecological crisis, post-colonialism, and social (in)justice. Our second goal is to explore the limits of individual responsibility in small and large scale technology production. To be eligible for the award: - The book must be authored or co-authored as a monograph and must explore a single topic (edited collections are not eligible). - All of the book’s authors must be current members of AoIR at the time of submission (May 10, 2024).
