CFP Deadline Extension to 7 June 2024: Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory, 2-4 April 2025

The Digital Humanities Research Hub at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, invites submissions for the inaugural Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory conference, to be hosted at the University of London and online from 2-4 April 2025 in collaboration with colleagues from Aarhus University, the British Library, and the Endangered Material Knowledge Programme at the British Museum. The deadline for submissions for the Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory Conference has been extended to Friday, 7 June 2024. We are also delighted to announce our first Keynote Speaker, Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, where her focus is on enhancing public access to digital cultural heritage materials and creating new virtual environments for exploring Black history. Her work explores the intersections of information discovery and African American history, spanning from researching early mentions of African American concert music performances in newspaper databases to curating exhibits showcasing transatlantic art inspired by African American film. Our conference <https://symposium.uoc.edu/112598/detail/2nd-cultural-studies-conference-mob…>proposal is grounded in the work of David Morley, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the materialities and contexts of mobile communications in relation to our everyday, always situated life: "context is no 'optional extra' which we might study at the end of the analytic process but rather, is best seen as a 'starting point' which has determining effects on both production and consumption" (2017, 2). In a recent book, Morley, along with Annette Hill, Maren Hartmann, and Magnus Andersson, introduces the concept of "mobile socialities" as a generative concept to reclaim the anthropological tradition of cultural and media reception studies and incorporate them into mobilities, reflecting on people in motion and the role of mobile media in everyday life. The paradigm of mobilities has opened up the field of social sciences to explore the role of movement in the constitution and functioning of institutions and social practices in recent decades (Urry, 2007): the constant flow of people, objects, money, communications, and ideas. These are physical or imaginary movements that also involve complex combinations of networks, relationships, technologies, and systems, not limited to fixed spaces. This mobility paradigm is defined as a non-media-centric approach and suggests moving away from solely identifying communicative processes and practices with the phenomenon of media and technologies. From this perspective, mobile communications allow experiencing everyday life as a continuum that problematizes the fragmentation of the public and private, production and reproduction, as well as the division between spaces and territories. The relational aspect is crucial and necessary to emphasize in a current climate and migration crisis: what happens in one place affects another, and people's experiences of life, their relationship with ideas, imaginaries and objects are very different, intersectional, interdependent, changing and dynamic. The aim of the conference is to contextualize mobilities and think about them in connection with socialities, representations, and discourses of popular culture, a central element of our contemporary societies, and the sense of belonging that these mobile communications enhance in communities, territories, cultures and traditions. We invite participants to explore mobilities in relation to the following general themes: - Socialities, Migrations, and Geographies of Mobility - Imaginaries and Representations of Mobility - Everyday Life and Mobile Communications - Mobilities, Belonging and Identities - Power and Mobility/Immobility - Consumption, Mobilities and Domestication - Media Industries, Regulation and Mobilities Keynotes Annette Hill is Professor of Media and Communications at Jönköping University. David Morley Emeritus professor at Goldsmiths University. His work spans media audience/technology studies, cultural geography and globalisation. CFP: Societal & User-Centered Privacy in AI (SUPA) Workshop

Privacy is critical to the responsible development of AI. However, the rapid evolution of AI, including the rapid deployment of generative AI, has resulted in new privacy risks with far-reaching societal consequences. In this half-day workshop, we aim to bring together academics, practitioners, designers, and advocates across civil society and regulation to evaluate the challenges and opportunities for user-centered privacy in AI. By nurturing a multidisciplinary environment, this workshop aims to create a network of scholars committed to addressing: - Challenges in implementing privacy measures, including issues in Usability and User Trust and interactions with AI privacy. - Empirical studies that gather attitudinal or behavioral insights related to privacy expectations for AI, privacy solutions or techniques - Effects of emerging AI technologies (e.g., generative AI) on the privacy of at-risk, vulnerable or marginalized populations (e.g., persons with disabilities, underrepresented populations, children, or gender communities) - Case studies showcasing successful user experience (UX) strategies in privacy-preserving AI applications - Open-source tools to demonstrate the integration of privacy measures into AI models - Best practices for UX design in choosing appropriate privacy parameters and associated trade-offs. - Ethical considerations for AI and user privacy - Challenges and opportunities in improving and enforcing regulation that protects privacy in AI This half-day in-person workshop solicits submissions across two categories: (1) research papers, and (2) position papers. Potential attendees are asked to submit by May 23rd 2024 via our submission site ( https://supa2024.usenix.hotcrp.com/) Papers should be at most 4 pages in length (excluding references) and should use the SOUPS template (word <https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/conference-files/usenix2021_soup…> or latex <https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/conference-files/usenix2024_soup…>). Shorter, more focused submissions (2-4 pages) are encouraged and authors are encouraged to ensure submissions relay the importance, relevance, and contributions of the work regardless of the length of the submission. Ph.D. position in Philosophy: Reconstructing AI Narratives

Dear Air Listers, I am happy to share that we are hiring a PhD Candidate at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. The Ph.D. project will focus on analyzing the metaphors and symbolism that inform Artificial Intelligence narratives and their ethical and political implications. While contemporary debates around AI often center on steering or limiting its impact, less attention is paid to the underlying concepts and their assumed universality. Concepts such as intelligence, humanity, and ethical prerequisites for responsible AI form the bedrock of AI discourse, necessitating critical scrutiny. This project aims to reconstruct the development of these symbolic and conceptual aspects that contribute to the prevailing narratives around AI. In order to do so, it is important to integrate a theoretical approach with an empirical one that involves different stakeholders. The PhD candidate will be based 50% in the Philosophy department at FASoS, and 50% at Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS).
