*** First Call for Contributions *** 20th International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2025) May 5-7, 2025, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://2025.persuasivetech.org (*** Proceedings to be published by Springer in LNCS ***) In a world in which technology is increasingly present in people’s lives, and changing human behavior and attitudes is often the key to solving many societal and personal problems, studying how technology might be used to influence humans (in their behavior, attitudes and information processing), is paramount. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. We welcome the following categories of papers and extended abstracts: • Technical papers that introduce novel persuasive technology approaches and solutions alongside evidence of their potential. • Empirical studies which seek to provide evidence and explanation of methods, principles and theories in persuasive systems. • Conceptual-theoretical papers which primarily seek to contribute to the general understanding of the field’s core themes and specificities. • Other papers, e.g. literature reviews or experience reports. SCOPE The scope of the conference includes (but is not limited to) the following topics: • Persuasive systems’ design • Behavior change support systems • Interaction with persuasive systems, interfaces, visualization • Interactive agents in persuasive systems • (Generative) AI for persuasive technology • Tailored and personalized persuasion • Gamification for persuasion • Evaluation and validation of persuasive applications • Fitting methods for development, evaluation and implementation of persuasive systems • Optimizing engagement with persuasive systems • Software architectures and technical infrastructures for persuasive systems • Smart environments, e.g. IoT, and persuasion • Digital Marketing, eCommerce, eTourism and SMART ecosystems • Motivational, cognitive and perceptual factors in persuasive technology • Application domains for persuasive technologies such as safety, healthy living, sustainable behaviors, learning and training, marketing and commerce, work environments, organizations • Positive technology • Humanizing and/or dehumanizing effects of persuasive technology • Values and ethics in persuasive technology • Privacy, perceived security and trust in persuasive technology • Resilience and counter-persuasion • Detecting persuasive strategies in social media posts • Encouraging adherence to safety measures in pandemic situations Questions that we hope to be addressed include, but are not limited to: • How to recognize and demonstrate the real life effects of persuasive technology on people’s attitudes and behaviours? • How to conduct studies that not just show their effectiveness but are also able to explain in more detail why a design or intervention works? • How to design an evaluation study so that it yields insights that are applicable to other designs or interventions? • How theoretical insight can help improve application and/or intervention planning and design? • How can design and intervention studies improve theory? SUBMISSION TYPES Regular Papers This format is suitable for original research, which is completed work at the time of submission and, regardless of the length of the paper, is a self-sufficient scientific contribution. Papers can be full papers (12 pages, excluding references) or short papers (6 pages, excluding references) in Springer LNCS format, and describe work not presented, published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Accepted papers will be included in the Springer LNCS conference proceedings and be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation. Selected papers will be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal (Taylor & Francis). Extended Abstracts We also welcome extended abstract submissions to showcase the results of already conducted studies where authors do not wish to publish them as regular papers in the conference proceedings but rather present them at the conference for discussions that can shape the final version (that may be submitted elsewhere later). The studies will be also be devoted a timeslot for oral presentation in a special session. Extended abstracts must not be more than 2 pages in CEUR format (including references). Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings, 1 column style, see here). Selected papers in this category, based on their quality, level of timeliness and relevance, and completion, will also be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal. Poster Presentations This format is suitable for descriptions of smaller studies, project outlines, literature reviews or work-in-progress. Authors should submit a 2-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style). Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings). Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Demonstrations and Artefacts The Persuasive 2025 track on Demonstrations and Artefact is intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners from academia and industry by demonstrating or presenting hardware and software products or artefacts, including those in virtual settings (e.g., simulation systems, VR, and games), that range from early research prototypes to mature production-ready systems. The contribution should be the result of original, innovative work, including solving novel technical or research problems, and/or creating novel individual or industrial UI/UX. Accepted demonstrations or presentations shall be presented live during the conference. Doctoral Consortium Papers The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 4-page abstract in CEUR format (1 column style) describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings (CEUR Workshop Proceedings) unless opted out by the student. Workshops and Tutorial Proposals Workshops are meant to gather a number of people to work interactively on an emerging topic and exchange ideas. Tutorials are intended to help people attending the conference organize a related scientific meeting on a specific topic or instruct on a specific practice. Approved workshops and tutorials will be announced on the conference website. Tutorials and workshops will take place during a half- or full-day session before the conference. Tenure-Track Position in Communication and Journalism The Noah Mozes Department of Communication and Journalism at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites outstanding candidates in communication to apply for an open-rank tenure-track position starting July, 2025. The department was ranked 15th in the world in last year’s Shanghai ranking, has a strong research focus and an international orientation. The members of its dynamic, international faculty specialize in research on digital and social media; political communication and conflict; journalism studies; social psychological processes; language, discourse and communication; visual media; as well as theory, history, and philosophy of communication and media (for more information, see here). The department offers innovative undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, teaching a diverse community of students. The department is particularly interested in candidates specializing in research areas in media and communication that can relate to and complement the work currently done at the department. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree at the time of hire, and demonstrate an active research program including peer-reviewed international publications in the relevant area. Bondy Valdovinos Kaye, Zhongwei Li This article identifies and contributes to a small but growing body of research that critically analyzes the user interfaces of digital platforms and apps. By examining how the interfaces of music-streaming platforms (MSPs) frame musical experience, we test claims that such platforms encourage "functional" and "mood-based" uses of music linked to problematic forms of power and subjectivity. While such framings are indeed evident in MSP interfaces, so too are other, rather different constructions of engagement with music. We argue that one significant power of MSPs is to incorporate diverse forms of musical experience into pervasive hybrids. Our approach advances interface analysis and research on the platformization of culture by illustrating the benefits of critical platform interface analysis through intra-domain platform interface analysis, and by offering general and music-specific taxonomies of digital platform interfaces.

Call for Proposals to host 2025 AoIR Flashpoint Symposium

The Association of Internet Researchers is seeking proposals for one-day AoIR Flashpoint Symposia to take place before the end of August 2025. As the 2025 AoIR conference takes place in São Paulo, Brazil, only proposals for locations outside of South America will be considered. An AoIR Flashpoint Symposium is a small event that provides an opportunity to deepen or foster conversations about internet research among regions, groups, and/or thematic research areas that have thus far been underrepresented in the Association of Internet Researchers and its conferences. The Association is making available funding of up to US$8,000 for the purpose of supporting a one-day symposium that will contribute to the life and mission of AoIR and feed into its annual conference. Each symposium will be a standalone event to take place in a region of the world that differs from that of the 2025 annual conference (São Paulo, Brazil). Preference will be given to regions and locations where an AoIR conference has not yet been held, but where at least one active AoIR member, who will be on the Flashpoint Symposium planning committee, resides. We also require that the symposium makes a contribution to the main 2025 AoIR conference in some way (e.g., a panel, pre-conference workshop, or another format that presents key contributions and outcomes from the symposium). In addition to local participants, all AoIR members are invited to attend the Flashpoint Symposium. Deadline for the submission of this proposal is 1 September 2024, with a decision returned by the end of October 2024. Proposals should be emailed to to symposia @ aoir.org by 1 September, 2024. Proposers are invited to engage in conversation with Nik John (prez at aoir dot org) and Sarah Roberts (vp at aoir dot org) if you have questions or anything you’d like to discuss. Proposals should: - Be no more than 1-2 pages in length. - Outline a distinct issue or theme to be addressed by the symposium. - Include a proposed date (between 1 April and 31 August) and schedule for the one-day event, and identify potential keynote speakers (keeping in mind AoIR’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity). Note: the proposal should ideally not suggest parallel sessions but rather envision a day of consecutive sessions (i.e. a single stream only). - Include a brief description of the leadership team’s history with AoIR and their plans for future involvement. - Demonstrate how this Flashpoint Symposium will connect with AoIR more broadly. - Include a preliminary budget that demonstrates in-kind support and/or sponsorship from the host institution(s) and creates a preliminary plan for cost items. Please note that AoIR funding is not to be allocated for the funding of participant travel costs, staff costs in support of the symposium’s organization, or indirect costs (such costs must be borne by local sponsorship), but may include keynote honoraria, travel of keynote speakers, meals, venue or labor costs. - Indicate how regional and transnational graduate students will be encouraged to participate. - Include a discussion of projected outcomes from this symposium and its potential for ongoing benefit to AoIR more broadly (e.g., AoIR conference panel, special issue, etc.). A selection of organizers and delegates should make a firm commitment to present key contributions and outcomes from the Flashpoint Symposium at the year’s annual conference. AoIR’s commitment to the symposium will include: - Support for promotion and administration through our various channels and platforms (e.g. via organization social media accounts and email lists), as well as limited AoIR administrative support. - Up to $US8,000 disbursed in the form of reimbursements and invoices to cover costs related to organizing the symposium. - Mentorship from members of AoIR Executive Committee related to the organization of the symposium and subsequent deliverables/outcomes. - Allocation of one session slot (panel, roundtable, fishbowl, experimental session, or pre-conference workshop) on the annual AoIR conference program to the symposium organizers. This session is invited and will be planned jointly by the symposium organizers, the AoIR Executive Committee, and the AoIR Conference organizers in order to present the symposium’s major themes and outcomes. It must involve several participants selected from among the organizers, keynote speakers, and/or other participants of the symposium in order to allow the symposium conversation to continue at the main annual conference. - An additional $US2,000 in travel awards to help bring a panel of Flashpoint participants to the AoIR conference in São Paulo. (This cannot be reallocated for any other purpose.) Proposals will be ranked in relation to their ability to: - Advance AoIR’s goal of diversification of membership and the expansion of geographical presence at the annual AoIR conference. - Address a theme, topic, or issue not yet prominent in AoIR’s annual conferences. - Demonstrate a commitment to encouraging graduate student participation, particularly from those in the host region. - Demonstrate capacity for carrying out the symposium in a manner that contributes to the benefit of AoIR and the individual organizer(s). - Demonstrate a commitment to present outcomes at the annual AoIR conference. Call for Book Chapters: Religion and AI (Bloomsbury)

Dear all, We are inviting book chapter proposals for the edited collection entitled Religion and AI: Theoretical and empirical approaches (Bloomsbury Publishing). The book will draw on cross-disciplinary conversations between scholars in media studies, sociology of religion, and visual arts with a focus on architecture. The project brings together various theoretical and empirical perspectives on religion and Artificial Intelligence and aims to investigate the impact and promise of AI for religious institutions, communities, and individuals; as well as the role AI might play in the representation of religion. The proposed book is divided into three sections: * Theoretical approaches * Empirical Case Studies * Reflective perspectives from the editors. The theory-based chapters reflect on how a selected theory (e.g., mediatization; transhumanism; phenomenology) explains AI and predicted religious attitudes and uses of AI. The empirical case studies supply real-world examples of religious uses of AI. Special attention will be given in chapter selection to a diversity of locations and traditions. The last section includes three reflective, future oriented essays from the editors thus providing an in-depth, thought-provoking, analysis of this area from a cross disciplinary perspective. Together, the book will provide a comprehensive look into uses, understandings, narratives, and projections of the relationship between religion and AI. We are inviting chapter proposals for: 1) Empirical Case Studies section (4000-6000 words); and/or 2) Theoretical Approaches (4000-6000 words). Hosting the next Open Hardware Summit

Hello, The Open Source Hardware Association is looking for the next location for the 2025 Open Hardware Summit. Past venues have included academic institutions, Makerspaces, and community spaces around the world. We are looking for a partner organization who is excited about Open Source and looking to build an amazing event with us. The ideal venue would hold 300 people and be low cost, and potentially have space for workshops and breakout spaces. We are also looking for team members to help us make it happen. Trust Games - Annotation Tasks

Trust Games I am looking for collaborators to help prepare a free educational online game suitable for secondary and collegiate classrooms focused on whether content is trustworthy or not. Please contact me if you want to be a part of this effort. It might operate something like the "Which Face is Real" application, but might be used instead for identifying and discussing untrustworthy accounts on Twitter as a gamified learning module for classes this fall. I have most of the pieces ready, but I am not an expert in games. I'd like to form an ad hoc team and have this operational for September and October of 2024. My goal is to offer an IRB-compliant game platform that generates usable research results and better informed student discussions in advance of the U.S. election in November. Annotation Tasks I have a new set of annotation tasks related to planning for the game development. I need motivated undergraduates willing to label batches of Tweets under conditions that test core features of gamification in labeling, starting with speed and accuracy. In addition to getting paid more for being the fastest/most accurate labelers, students will see some remarkable datasets that have historical significance.
