Dear Colleague, We have an opening for a fully funded PhD studentship on the topic of Responsible AI Literacy in Journalism at the University of Surrey (UK). 2024 AoIR Dissertation Award Winner

It gives us great pleasure to announce that the recipient of the 2024 Annual Dissertation Award is Dr. Robert Dorschel from the University of Cambridge, UK. Our congratulations to Dr. Dorschel! Dr. Dorschel’s dissertation, titled "The Social Codes of Tech Workers: On the Quest to be Middle-Class Wealthy and Morally Worthy", addresses a wide range of pressing issues related to digital labour, class dynamics, ethical considerations in technology, diversity and inclusion, and the broader impacts of digital capitalism on society. These issues are highly relevant in current debates on the future of work, technology, and socio-economic inequalities. The dissertation's exploration of tech workers' subjectivities and social codes intersects with digital humanities, particularly in understanding how digital tools and platforms are designed, developed, and used. By focusing on the creators of digital content and technologies, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of internet research's cultural and social dimensions. A key differentiator of this dissertation is that it was well structured with a clear methodology that was theoretically grounded and could easily be replicated. The committee also recognises Dr. Yeweon Kim from the University of California, USA, with an Honourable Mention. Dr. Kim’s dissertation, titled, "The Bystander Public for Online Incivility: A Development of the Bystander Counter-Intervention Model" explores the socio-psychological mechanisms behind bystander counter-intervention (BCI) in online incivility. It identifies the fluidity of online bystander roles and the decision-making processes that lead to different behavioural responses, such as supporting, overlooking, or confronting incivility. Key findings indicate that frequent exposure to online incivility and a sense of responsibility to support the perpetrator are significant predictors of BCI behaviour. The dissertation extends traditional bystander intervention models by introducing the BCI model, which theorizes that bystanders justify incivility and perceive benefits in supporting it, influenced by their self-efficacy. This research contributes to the understanding of how bystanders can either exacerbate or mitigate online incivility, highlighting the complex dynamics of online interactions and the potential for targeted interventions to reduce harmful online behaviour. This 1-day preconference, part of the National Communication Association’s annual convention, will dedicate scholarly space to creative economies, influencer culture and labor, and content creation practices. New article about AI & Jewish Humor

Fellow AoIRistas: I have a new article out in First Monday with Nathaniel Laywine and Victoria Simon, which we recently discussed at an ICA postconference at QUT (thanks to Jean and Ariadna for hosting). The article is titled " Laughing to keep from [user input undefined]: ChatGPT, Jewish humor, and cultural erasure,” and the title pretty much tells you what it’s about. Here’s the full abstract: This paper uses the embodied, Jewish identities of its three authors, and the experimental methodology of kibbitzing as a form of collective inquiry and self-reflexive praxis in order to demonstrate the limitations of chatbots to produce humorous narratives from an explicitly Jewish epistemology. By contrasting the affordances of large language models (LLMs) and their associated chatbots with the context-based logics of Jewish joke craft and storytelling, this article goes on to demonstrate the risk of cultural erasure that is posed by the positivist, denotative meanings associated with ChatGPT’s attempts at producing jokes for, or about, Jews. CFP: “What would an ethical search engine look like?” We welcome 500-word (excluding bibliography) abstract submissions on topics including, but not limited to, those listed below: * Key ethical limitations of search engines, the impact that these have on individuals, communities or wider society, and what might be done about them. * Alternative models for organising and/or searching the web. * Is an ideal search engine possible, and what would it look like? * Reports on ongoing initiatives, non-profits, or activism for the future of search engines. * Search engine results for controversial or contested issues, for example, conflict, migration, marginalisation, criminal justice, politics, religion, and the climate crisis. * The ethics of the advertising model and other economic principles that currently support search engines, including SEO, and surveillance capitalism. Is another model possible? * The ethical aspects of Google’s market domination and antitrust laws. * Do search engines have ethical duties or responsibilities to users and/or society? * Search engines and sustainability. * Bias, non-Western perspectives, and decolonialisation. * Personalisation and localisation for an increasingly globalized world * Search engines and education: the ethics of truth, justice and trustworthiness. * The regulation of search engines: ethical, legal, and/or social approaches. * Search engines and freedoms: the right to information, the right to be forgotten, the right to data collection, the right to opt-out, and the right to privacy. * What is fairness in the context of search engines: discrimination, social justice, and normativity. * Search engines and openness. What is transparency in the context of algorithms and machine learning? * Search engines and future technologies, including Large Language Models and AI. How will new technological methods shift current ethical questions and debates? Where do you see questions of ethics and search engines heading in the future? Preliminary Schedule 13th-14th September 2024 Day One: Papers and Plenary * 15-20-minute papers on “What would an ethical search engine look like?” * Group plenary and discussion. * Chance to continue conversations over dinner. Day Two: Putting Our Ethical Ideas into Practice * Project 1: "The Ethical Interface" – An introduction to a new collaborative project to build a Chrome extension that will interactively highlight ethical issues to users while they are using Google’s search engine. * Project 2: Search Engine Ethics Encyclopaedia and Database (SEEED) will create a database of key issues, topics, and questions, collaboratively written by a range of different experts, specifically for a public audience. * Workshop to collaborate on the design and development of these collaborative tools, which would represent an output of our group. * Wrap up and mapping out the next steps for the project. Travel information The event will be held on the Edgbaston campus<https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/contact/directions> of the University of Birmingham. By Rail Most cross-country services to Birmingham arrive at New Street Station. Up to six trains an hour depart for the University on the cross-city line (ten minutes to University station, final destination Longbridge or Redditch). The centre of the main campus is a five-minute walk from University Station. By Air Birmingham International Airport has direct flights from locations in the UK, as well as from the USA, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. If you are arriving in London, there is a frequent train service from London Euston railway station to New Street Station (journey time around 1 hour 30 minutes).
