Best Regards, Srravya (and the AIES team) ---- Panel 86 *Echoes of Human Care and AI Repair in Times of Broken Machines* We explore AI as a ‘broken machine,’ examining flaws and failures as sites for sociotechnical change which are entangled with socio-political histories and shape future potentialities. Engaging with relational and nonlinear conceptual and activist lenses exemplified by care and repair, techno-refusal and abolition, this panel aims to challenge mainstream characterizations of AI and chart the complexities of its intertwined flaws, errors and uncertainties. We welcome case studies, theoretical and methodological analyses, and artistic expressions. This panel explores the socio-political significance of AI malfunctioning through the lens of care and repair, situating these within broader scholarship from STS and Critical Data Studies, aiming to bring together a collective of researchers, artists and activists interested in AI brokenness as both method and site. Just as reverberations transmit and transform energy across space and time, the discussion will focus on the echoes of disruption and the potential for constructive reactivation within and without AI systems. Drawing inspiration from Sarah Sharma's ‘Manifesto for the Broken Machine,’ we aim to interrogate how brokenness in AI can serve as a site for radical reflection and innovation. The unintentional ‘great IT outage’ of August 2024 and the intentional governmental internet shutdowns in India serve as points of departure to examine brokenness as a critical concept. By likening broken machines to figures such as Sara Ahmed's killjoys and Donna Haraway's cyborgs, we propose examining the alternative onto-epistemologies that challenge mainstream AI narratives. These perspectives often defy neat categorisation under traditional expertise, demanding a more inclusive approach that embraces marginal voices and diverse modes of knowledge production. This panel invites contributions through case studies, theoretical and methodological explorations, or artistic expressions, that address the following questions: How can brokenness in AI be reimagined as a force for socio-political change? What are the possibilities for repair and care in an age where technology rapidly co-evolves with capitalist exploitation? How do marginalised onto-epistemologies inform our understanding of AI? Is there room for resistance or abolition in regions of high AI entrenchment and enchantment? AI Ethics & Society is a research network based in Scotland and Northern England, exploring the critical intersections of AI through invited talks, reading groups, screenings, and symposia. About classification of short-length videos

Hello everyone, I have been conducting research on social media based videos for a long time, but most of them have been in long format (10 minutes and more). This time it looks like we have many short-length videos. I read a paper a long time ago, about either Instagram or Tik-Tok videos, where they used a classification such as reply video, reaction video, commentary video, etc. Does anyone have a similar classification that we could use as reference? Hello, I’m writing to share a CFP for a special issue of Feminist Media Histories on “Craftwork within the Digital” co-edited by Whitney Trettien and Christina Corfield https://online.ucpress.edu/DocumentLibrary/Craftwork%20CFP.pdf This special issue is designed to stage a conversation between crafters, artists, digital media scholars, designers, and historians and scholars of craftwork. We want to ask: What is the place of craft’s feminist legacies, its emphasis on handwork and physical making, in an era when so much creative artifice takes place on screens, with data held on very distant servers? What might digital crafting look or feel like (and what is the difference between looking and feeling through craft)? Also, what is the role or use of crafting in the digital “smart” era in which “smart” does not indicate critical thinking but rather the networked intelligence of contemporary technologies of surveillance? How might a focus on craftwork decenter industrial-capitalist and western, Eurocentric genealogies of the digital? Possible topics may include: ● The use (and elision) of craft to make physical components used in digital technologies, especially the role of global labor in hand-making electronic machines and networks ● The role of the hand and handicraft in digital practices like programming and web design ● The craft of building digital tools like mesh networks or interactive and physical computing systems ● Art that brings into relief the crafted materiality of digital media ● Imbrications of traditional and digital craft in the Global South ● Cultural histories of digital craft within global regions that are not defined by western conceptions or standards of “innovation” ● Celebrations of the mundane and the everyday in quotidian practices of craft during the digital era ● Feminist interventions that decenter the digital through handicraft ● Digitality and craft practice as embodiments of political ideologies or identities ● Alternative or radical conceptions of “makers” and “maker spaces / labs” Along with traditional scholarly essays, we are interested in short film, digital media, documentation of a physical project or process, or other craft genres, like patterns. We also invite submissions that partner artists and practitioners with historians and critical theorists for interviews or other formats that generate a dialogue between practice and scholarship.
