Drawing from global research on AI production networks, he examines how the narrative of inevitable total automation serves to hide the growing workforce of data laborers, content moderators, and infrastructure maintenance workers. Casilli analyzes this 'Godot Effect' across multiple sectors and proposes new frameworks for understanding AI not as a purely technological system but as a manifestation of capitalist labor practices that thrive on colonial exploitation and global workforce invisibility. Bio of the Author: Antonio Casilli is a Professor of Sociology at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and a member of the CNRS Interdisciplinary Institute on Innovation. His research focuses on digital labor, AI workers' rights, and platform capitalism. His influential publications have been translated into several languages. His latest book, originally published in French as "En attendant les robots" (Seuil, 2019), has been published in English by the University of Chicago Press as "Waiting for Robots" (2025). Information technology has the capacity to enable smart, virtual persuasive environments that simultaneously provide multimodal cues and psycho-physiological feedback for personal change by strengthening emotional, social, and physical presence. Numerous persuasive applications have been developed over the past decades with the aim of inducing desirable behavioral changes. These applications have shown promising results in motivating and supporting people to change or adopt new behaviors and attitudes in various domains such as health and wellbeing. The field of persuasive technology continues to be a crucial link between different sciences, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of behavior change support systems and an interdisciplinary approach to their design, implementation, and evaluation. However, the full potential of technologies to shape behaviors and continuously track the progress and outcomes of interventions currently are not used to their full potential. The BCSS workshop seeks to shed new light on the various processes of digital persuasion. Yet, although human-computer interaction is social in nature and people may even see software applications as social actors, it is still mostly unclear how these interactions end-up shaping attitudes, beliefs, and emotions. Additionally, the extent to which these interactions influence behavior, and, even more so, the pitfalls and possible drawbacks of persuasion via technologies are not yet fully understood. Moreover, as people interact with information technologies, they, at the same time, keep modifying their environment as well as adjust their goals during use time. This seems to indicate that digital persuasion is not a one-time, isolated event but rather an ongoing, dynamic process. Since its inception, the BCSS workshop has emphasized the highly interdisciplinary approach required for developing and implementing behavior change support strategies and their associated systems. The workshop provides a scholarly forum connecting multidisciplinary researchers, practitioners and experts from various scientific disciplines such as information systems science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, psychology and medicine. Beyond peer-reviewed scientific paper presentations, discussions and debates on the pillars of BCSSs are being conducted. The theme of this year’s event, *“Generative AI and behavior change support systems: Leveraging innovations for a lasting impact,” *especially seeks, but is not limited to, submissions that utilize cutting-edge technologies such as AI and innovative methodologies in the design, development and implementation of BCSS. The ultimate goal is to create flexible and efficient behavior change support systems that promote long-term behavioral modifications across various domains. *Paper submission* Scientific papers in two categories are sought for (the submission can be either in CEUR or Springer LNCS format): (a) Full papers, max 16 pages. Morten ABOUT THE BOOK Mediating Plureality: Technology, Perception and Ethics in a Divided Democracy is one of the first books of the second Trump administration to deal with affective polarization and truth. Author Morten Bay asks what role media and tech have played in the current democratic decline and finds provocative answers. In the book, he claims that: - Contrary to popular belief, social media content is not to blame. - The problem began with the shift to a high-choice media environment in the early 1990s, including talk radio and the early Web. - Around this time, to stave off online competition, news media began insisting that they owned The Truth. - Simultaneously, the tech industry's faith in data and prediction fostered a new epistemic overconfidence. - This led to widespread epistemic arrogance becoming morally acceptable. - Which, in turn, led to increased self-sorting and the rise of affective polarization. - Even scholars began ignoring centuries of basic epistemology despite of new, neuroscientific advances supporting a constructivist approach to reality perception. Drawing on political theorists who argue that these are perfect conditions for authoritarianism, Bay contends that democratic decline from epistemic arrogance must be met with epistemic humility. He calls for a cultural shift toward greater acceptance of other people’s reality perceptions and proposes an ethics of pluralist realities – a plureality. It begins with those who control the media platforms as well as media users committing to a more ethical media conduct. "By fostering a more empathetic, less normative analysis, Bay delivers a kind of palliative clarion call to advocate for more pluralistic democratic society." - David Craig, Associate Professor at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and author of Apocalypse Television "Bay has hit the nail upon the proverbial head: We need to rethink media before we can rethink democracy." - Aram Sinnreich, Professor at American University and author of The Secret Life of Data: Navigating Hype and Uncertainty in the Age of Algorithmic Surveillance Morten Bay teaches courses on media, technology, and society at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
