*** Last Call for Additional Contributions *** 20th International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2025) May 5-7, 2025, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://2025.persuasivetech.org (*** Proceedings to be published by Springer in CCIS ***) In a world in which technology is increasingly present in people’s lives, and changing human behavior and attitudes is often the key to solving many societal and personal problems, studying how technology might be used to influence humans (in their behavior, attitudes and information processing), is paramount. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. SCOPE The scope of the conference includes (but is not limited to) the following topics: • Persuasive systems’ design • Behavior change support systems • Interaction with persuasive systems, interfaces, visualization • Interactive agents in persuasive systems • (Generative) AI for persuasive technology • Tailored and personalized persuasion • Gamification for persuasion • Evaluation and validation of persuasive applications • Fitting methods for development, evaluation and implementation of persuasive systems • Optimizing engagement with persuasive systems • Software architectures and technical infrastructures for persuasive systems • Smart environments, e.g. IoT, and persuasion • Digital Marketing, eCommerce, eTourism and SMART ecosystems • Motivational, cognitive and perceptual factors in persuasive technology • Application domains for persuasive technologies such as safety, healthy living, sustainable behaviors, learning and training, marketing and commerce, work environments, organizations • Positive technology • Humanizing and/or dehumanizing effects of persuasive technology • Values and ethics in persuasive technology • Privacy, perceived security and trust in persuasive technology • Resilience and counter-persuasion • Detecting persuasive strategies in social media posts • Encouraging adherence to safety measures in pandemic situations Questions that we hope to be addressed include, but are not limited to: • How to recognize and demonstrate the real life effects of persuasive technology on people’s attitudes and behaviours? • How to conduct studies that not just show their effectiveness but are also able to explain in more detail why a design or intervention works? • How to design an evaluation study so that it yields insights that are applicable to other designs or interventions? • How theoretical insight can help improve application and/or intervention planning and design? • How can design and intervention studies improve theory? SUBMISSION TYPES All accepted papers in the different categories of additional contributions will appear in the adjunct conference proceedings volume to be published by Springer in the CCIS series (https://www.springer.com/series/7899) All papers must be formatted using the Springer conference proceedings template (https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…) The length of the paper is specified below for each different category of contribution. Workshop Papers The following workshops will have their accepted papers published in CCIS by Springer: • 1st International Workshop on Upholding Ethical Designs (iWOULD) https://iwould2025.wordpress.com • Persuasion and AI Disclosure: Building Trust in Synthetic Media https://aunmedia.org/AIDisclosure/ The workshop papers should be 12 pages in length (excluding references). Extended Abstracts They showcase the results of already conducted and unpublished studies where authors do not wish to publish them as regular papers in the conference proceedings but rather present them at the conference for discussions that can shape the final version (that may be submitted elsewhere later). The studies will also be devoted a time slot for oral presentation in a special session. Extended abstracts must be 4 to 6 pages in Springer CCIS format (including references). Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct Springer CCIS proceedings, unless the authors wish to opt out. Selected papers in this category, based on their quality, level of timeliness, relevance and completion, will also be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal. Late Breaking Results (LBR) The papers in this category cover new research in any topic that regular paper submissions cover and are expected to present new and emerging results. Authors should submit a 12 pages paper (excluding references) in Springer CCIS format. Accepted papers will be included in the adjunct Springer CCIS proceedings. Poster Presentations This format is suitable for descriptions of smaller studies, project outlines, literature reviews or work-in-progress. Authors should submit a 4-page paper in Springer CCIS format. Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct Springer CCIS proceedings. Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Demonstrations and Artefacts The Persuasive 2025 track on Demonstrations and Artefact is intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners from academia and industry by demonstrating or presenting hardware and software products or artefacts, including those in virtual settings (e.g., simulation systems, VR, and games), that range from early research prototypes to mature production-ready systems. The contribution should be the result of original, innovative work, including solving novel technical or research problems, and/or creating novel individual or industrial UI/UX. Accepted demonstrations or presentations shall be presented live during the conference and will be included as a 4-pages paper in Springer CCIS format in the adjunct Springer CCIS proceedings. Doctoral Consortium Papers The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 12 pages proposal (including references) in Springer CCIS format describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted papers will be included in the adjunct Springer CCIS proceedings unless opted out by the student. Deadline for the submissions is 7 February, Best Minna *** Towards Sustainable Digital Futures: a two day symposium, 14-15 May 2025, University of Sheffield, UK Over the past decades, digitalization and sustainability have emerged as two of the most significant global trends, yet they have largely developed independently. Digitalization is proposed as a solution to address global sustainability challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, and biodiversity loss (United Nations 2018; Dwivedi et al. 2022). Nevertheless, technologies such as AI are partial and deceptive solutions to the planetary crises if their sustainability is not addressed. Alarming figures from scientific research have highlighted the detrimental environmental effects of digitalization and datafication. The environmental impacts of digitalization are significant and growing, with rising electricity consumption, water usage, and emissions from devices, networks, and data centers (Gelenbe, 2023; Lange et al., 2023; Li et al., 2023). Moreover, the extraction of critical minerals for digital devices as well as planned obsolescence and poor recycling cause severe ecological harm, particularly in the Global South (Lange et al., 2023). Although societies want digital technologies to serve the social good, there has been far more focus on environmental harms of digital technologies than sustainable alternatives. In this symposium, we ask what a sustainable digital society looks like and how we get there. What kind of research is needed to make the digital future more sustainable? The interdisciplinary symposium will include paper presentations, a workshop, and keynote talk. We welcome different types of presentations: theoretical, empirical, and methodological research papers, “work-in-progress”, practice-based responses, and “wildcards” (suggest your own presentation type). Proposals may respond to, but are not limited by, the following themes: * Conceptual frameworks and vocabularies for studying good digital sustainability * Rethinking digital efficiency from a planetary perspective * The ethics of resource-intensive technologies (e.g. AI) * Alternative visions of sustainable digital society * Sustainable practices in digital industries and digital everyday life * Policy innovations and interventions for addressing digital unsustainability * Innovative and/or speculative methods for digital sustainability research * Art-science collaboration, design prototypes, or games on digital sustainability Please submit your proposal (200-250 words) with a brief bio via email to minna.vigren(a)lut.fi<mailto:minna.vigren@lut.fi> by 7th February 2025. Dear colleagues, We're delighted to share the following call for papers for the upcoming <https://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/information/author…> 'fan' <https://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/information/author…> issue of M/C Journal<https://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/information/author…>: In the contemporary online landscape, fan activity and political participation have become fundamentally intertwined. Both groups have always engaged in similar practices of collective interpretation and identity-building, but their convergence in action and impact grows. Even the term “fan” itself spans from casual appreciation to intense partisanship, encompassing varying levels of emotional, ideological, and financial commitment. As online spaces have evolved – from fan-run fora to massive centralised platforms, through the degradation of Twitter/X and the rise of alternatives and emphasis on cross-posting functionalities –, localised community norms have been disrupted, affecting both communication and the sociopolitical importance of online discourses. For example, communities have evolved from foundational behaviours of interpretive knowledge-building to share a rise in conspiratorial thinking and dark participation patterns, mediated by platform affordances, with activity that regularly gains mainstream media attention. These practices are at once organic and strategic: fan groups function as political publics and vice versa, from political campaigning to marketing tactics, while fans grow increasingly aware of their own capacity to mobilise across entertainment and political spaces. These developments highlight deepening intersections as discourses across entertainment and politics are increasingly conflated, polarising along both affective and ideological lines. On this, the politics of ‘against’ are just as powerful as 'for'. Fan studies scholars have examined these dynamics through paired concepts – fan/anti-fan, like/dislike, beautiful/ugly – which nuance the benefits and detriments of such engagement. These nuances are particularly important where strong emotions, collective knowledge creation, and identity formation are concerned. We invite submissions that explore what the concept of “fan” means and does in current communication contexts in a broad sense. This issue thus seeks to explore the evolving relationships between fandom and political communication, examining how fan practices, communities, and identities intersect with political discourse, activism, and social movements across cultural contexts. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Affect, emotion, and parasociality in political identity formation * Interpretational polarisation and collective identity * Fandoms as political movements and vice versa * Political and economic weaponisation of fan practices * Anti-fandom and political opposition * Forensic fandom and interpretive or conspiratorial practices * Dark participation and ambiguous engagement * Cross-platform dynamics of political fan movements * Platform-specific political fan cultures * Identity, privacy, and conflicts thereof * 'Data fandom’ and strategic focus on engagement metrics * The role of play in political participation * Depictions of fan activity in media * Transmedia political narratives * Historical perspectives on political fandom Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. As criminal networks increasingly operate across both physical and digital domains, researchers face new methodological challenges and opportunities in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. We invite submissions for presentations, posters, meet-ups, making and doing sessions, and pre-submitted papers - the CFP will be open until Friday 14 March (11:59pm AEDT). This year’s conference will take place across three days, from Wednesday July 9th to Friday July 11th in Narrm/Melbourne. Day 1 will take place at the National Communication Museum in Hawthorn. We will be announcing details of national and international keynote speakers in coming weeks - please stay tuned! ‘SIGNALS AND NOISES’ AusSTS 2025 seeks to bring the broad scope of STS subjects, skills, practices and politics into conversation with a core problematic of information theory - the problem of noise. Noise (as distortion, as error) is a problem for communication - it corrupts and contaminates communication signals (as they fly along wires or along undersea cables for example). But to eliminate noise entirely is to shut signals down, to sever communication. To perfectly silence noise would also mean perfectly silencing the signal to which it belongs. Signal and noise are intimately, iteratively bonded in their material production, reception and translation. What questions then might signals and noises ask of STS? Is it simply a case, as it was for Shannon and Weaver (1949) of eliminating noise as far as possible in the service of signal? Or can we listen to ‘noise’ differently? Can the difference between what we seek to understand or convey on the one hand, and the ‘unintended things’ that trouble our efforts on the other, be illustrative? How might we work creatively with the flotsam and jetsam of research, or trace the twisting journeys of signals?
