Nominations for 2025 Nancy Baym Book Award now open

We are pleased to call for nominations for the Nancy Baym Annual Book Award. This award recognizes the best scholarship of the Association of Internet Researchers, and highlights the breadth of work relating to the social and cultural dimensions of networked media. To be eligible for the award: - The book must be authored or co-authored as a monograph and must explore a single topic (edited collections are not eligible). - All of the book’s authors must be current members of AoIR at the time of submission (May 7, 2025). Memberships may be purchased here: https://members.aoir.org/. - The book must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2024. The books will be reviewed by a committee of Jun Liu, (University of Copenhagen and Committee Chair), Nancy Baym (Microsoft Research), Niki Cheong (King’s College London), Helton Levy (London Metropolitan University), John McNut (University of Delaware), Sarah Murray (University of Michigan), and Robert Tynes (Bard College). Each book should be accompanied by an emailed letter of nomination. Self-nominations are most certainly welcome. The letter of nomination, which must be written by a current member of AoIR, should outline: - How the book contributes to AoIR’s intellectual community. - The book’s unique contributions and overall strengths. - If not a self-nomination, the letter should also include a statement that the nominated author has been contacted prior to its submission and accepts the nomination. Books submitted without a meaningful nomination letter outlining both the strengths of the book and the book’s contribution to the AoIR community to AoIR will not be eligible. Out of Order? Critical Reflections on Big Tech, Inequalities and Digital Futures 2025 Research Symposium, The University of Sheffield, UK Organized by the Digital Society Network and the Department of Sociological Studies’ Social Inequalities and Social Ordering Research Theme June 27th, 2025. Times and location, TBA. Abstract submission deadline: May 10th. The increasing consolidation of wealth and power in the tech sector has become a focal point for reflecting on social ordering, the intensification of social inequalities, and understanding digital futures. It is now impossible to ignore Big Tech. For many, we are now confronted with a feeling of apprehension about how the world is being re-ordered and what kind of future we are entering. From algorithms, data centres, and AI platforms that shape our everyday lives to powerful elites working to dismantle government infrastructure and automate work under the auspices of ushering in a new era of AI-fueled efficiency, there is now a larger apprehension that the future is volatile, chaotic, falling apart, and out of order. This symposium aims to bring together researchers of any career stage interested in Big Tech. We aim to create an interdisciplinary space to critically reflect on Big Tech, share ongoing research endeavours, develop collaborative research programmes, and discuss ways in which we can intervene in a world out of order. We welcome submissions addressing any topic that pertains to the social, political, economic, and cultural implications of Big Tech and social ordering. Submissions can include (but not limited to): theoretical reflections, empirical research, policy/impact projects, and creative/artistic projects. Plenary Speaker Devika Narayan, Bristol Digital Futures Institute https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/devika-narayan We are delighted to welcome Devika Narayan as the plenary speaker for this research symposium. Devika’s research examines the political economy of digital platforms and data infrastructures, and critically reflects on key issues of organizational restructuring and governance, particularly in the Global South. Devika will be presenting a paper entitled: Untethered: Scalable Computing and the Acceleration of Industrial Change This talk examines the impact of a highly concentrated tech sector on firm practices across industries. I intend to answer three questions: 1) What is distinctive about computing technologies today? 2) What is the contemporary structure and organisation of corporate computing? 3) How does this configuration of computing relations impact capitalist logics? Overall, my claim is that digital technology and the tech sector intensifies volatility and chaos in capitalist industries through new forms of abstraction, modularity, and outsourcing. New tools and techniques of rapid experimentation speed up not just expansion and growth but also speed up the interruption and devaluation of established firm practices. Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to a call for papers for a special issue on platforms and sustainability for the journal Platforms & Society. SI: Greening the Digital Society: Platforms, Sustainability & the Climate Crisis Editors: Rianne Riemens, Donya Alinejad, Judith Keilbach, Anne Helmond (Utrecht University) Call: https://journals.sagepub.com/page/pns/callforpaper Deadline for abstracts: May 23 Rationale: Digital technologies, including cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI), are often framed as indispensable allies in the fight against climate change. At the same time, these technologies have an enormous negative environmental impact through their high demands for energy, water, and their reliance on critical raw materials. In recent years, tech companies have increasingly positioned themselves as environmentally responsible actors, working towards decarbonizing their businesses. However, these same companies have reported rising emissions linked to their AI products, still depend on fossil fuels, and continuously expand their infrastructures. Meanwhile, as knowledge brokers, they fail to address climate disinformation circulating on their platforms. Nevertheless, sustainability scholarship has a demonstrated tendency to celebrate platforms as drivers of sustainable societal change (Kuntsman and Rattle 2019; Mouthaan et al., 2022). We invite contributions that critically engage with the complex and often contradictory relationship between platform companies, the climate crisis, and the pursuit of just, sustainable futures. We seek papers that explore the role of platform companies in the challenge of greening the digital society. This special issue asks: How does the role of platform companies—ranging from Big Tech firms to AI startups, chip manufacturers, and cloud infrastructure providers—in the climate crisis call for new perspectives on platform power and its environmental impact? How can we analyze the infrastructural, political, and cultural power of the “new conglomerates” (Srnicek, 2024), particularly in their roles as knowledge brokers or energy intermediaries? Can we speak of a “platformization” of the climate crisis (Helmond, 2015), and if so, what does that entail? And how do these changes occur in different geographical contexts or parts of the supply chain? We invite contributions from a diverse group of authors using a range of methods, working in different regional and institutional contexts, and focusing on a variety of case studies. Possible topics include: * Methods and approaches for studying the environmental impact of digital platforms; * Sustainability and waste across data infrastructures and the stack; * Tech companies and CEOs as environmental actors; * Theorizations of green platform capitalism and “green extractivism”; * Digital platforms and the production, dissemination, and control of climate knowledge; * The political economy of Big Tech and energy provision/distribution (wind, solar, geothermal, nuclear, fossil fuels) across different scales; * Sustainability as a “hype” and platforms’ corporate greenwashing; * Corporate environmentalism of Big Tech versus state politics (e.g. national public–private partnerships, friction in local contexts, lobby practices); * Big Tech and climate justice movements (including local and Global South resistance); * Visions and imaginaries of a green platform society. Dear Colleagues, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly embedded in various aspects of modern life, significantly influencing sectors such as healthcare, journalism, and more. Despite its transformative potential, the deployment of AI systems has exposed considerable concerns regarding bias, which can result in unfair, discriminatory, or erroneous outcomes for individuals and organizations. The intersection of bias and artificial intelligence (AI) is a critical area of research and development, focusing on the ways in which biases—whether societal, cultural, or technical—can be embedded into AI systems and the impacts thereof. This Special Issue aims to explore the various dimensions of bias in AI, from data collection and algorithm design to deployment and societal implications. These biases undermine the reliability, transparency, and ethical foundations of AI technologies. Addressing AI bias is imperative to ensuring that AI systems are fair, inclusive, and beneficial for all segments of society. This Special Issue on "AI Bias" aims to explore the multifaceted nature of bias in AI tools and applications, investigating its sources, manifestations, impacts, and potential solutions within but not limited to the media. We seek to compile a diverse collection of original research articles, reviews, and case studies that delve into various dimensions of AI bias from technical, ethical, and societal perspectives. We welcome submissions from diverse fields, including digital media, journalism, computer science, ethics, political science, sociology, and law, to foster a multidisciplinary dialogue on this crucial topic.
