We seek proposals for creative work to be presented at the Georgetown Steam Plant in Seattle. Potential submissions include, but are not limited to, interactive and immersive works and installations, video and projection mapping, audio and music installations and live performances, artist talks, workshops, demonstrations, and screenings. While we ask that applicants take the venue’s unique qualities into account, submissions do not need to respond specifically to the site in theme or concept. We see the festival as a vessel/container for holding and germinating artist projects in different stages of recognition and development, and welcome contributions which entangle with, emerge from, or leak into these different nodes of engagement with digital art and culture. Call for Expressions of Interest for AoIR2027

The Executive Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from prospective Conference Hosts for the annual meeting of the Association for October 2027. According to our regular rotation schedule, the 2027 conference is set to take place in Europe, however we will consider EOIs from other locations too. EOIs are due to the AoIR Executive Committee by June 18, 2025. EOIs will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee, who will then gauge feasibility through a series of follow-up discussions with proposers. Proposers for the 2027 conference will be informed of decisions regarding conference hosting by September 2025. The AoIR membership will be informed of the 2027 conference location during the AGM at AoIR2025 in Brazil. The AoIR conference draws an international group of 500-700 researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the individual, social, political, economic and cultural aspects of the internet and related technologies. The Conference Host Committee is a regional group of scholars that may be part of the same or different organisations. They are also invited to propose a Local Chair and a Program Chair. The Local Chair oversees the local running of the conference. The Program Chair oversees the submissions and review process of papers, panels, workshops, and preconferences, and schedules the conference sessions. (Given the recent growth in the number of submissions to our conference, and the labor involved in managing them, we recommend proposing two people to share the Program Chair role.) Members of the Conference Host Committee should have a strong existing connection to the Association of Internet Researchers. Serving on the Conference Hosting committee is a large time commitment. The role of the Local Chair and host committee is to make contributions to the conference theme and call for papers, identify keynote and plenary speakers, plan and provide crucial local knowledge and connections, and oversee region-specific fundraising (where possible, provide venue space at cost or in kind). AoIR will assist with the practical conference planning, including negotiating contracts with hotels, meeting venues, catering, and the like, and will partner with the host committee on many of the administrative details of the conference, such as reception and meal planning, AV and wifi provision, and exhibitor displays. Organizations or consortia that may be interested in hosting AoIR2027 should contact AoIR President Nicholas John at prez (at) aoir.org by 18 June 2025 with a brief expression of interest. The EOI should include the following and be no longer than 5 double spaced pages: 1. the individuals and organization(s) involved, and their proposed roles; 2. the connection of proposers to internet research and to AoIR; 3. a description of any prior experiences proposers have had with organizing or hosting a conference, and the roles played in this; 4. an argument to support the proposed conference location, especially with respect to ease of travel to the venue for AoIR’s multinational community of conference participants, including visa approvals; 5. initial thoughts on local venue options. AoIR has in the past held the annual conference at a variety of venue spaces including universities, conference centers, and hotels. Proposed venues should allow for 12-15 current sessions for three consecutive days, with at least one space that can accommodate all attendees simultaneously; 6. prospective conference dates, keeping in mind any major local, national, and international holidays, semester schedules, or other aspects that might affect the timing of the conference; 7. a firm indication of whether you will be attending AoIR2025 in Niteroi, Brazil and are available to meet for further discussions about hosting AoIR2027. The conference will take place from September 10–12, 2025 in Zurich (hosted by the University of Zurich, ETH, and ZHdK). Deadline for abstract submission: May 9, 20215 About the Roundtable The ways we study contemporary technologies shape not only how we understand their sociotechnical world but also key epistemic questions about how the researchers involved in their world-building create knowledge and collaborate. In this roundtable, we’ll explore questions of critique and epistemology in researching controversial technologies (such as blockchain). Rather than simply doing critique, our aim is to use critique as a point of departure — a lens through which to examine and reflect on our own research practices. We invite contributions that critically engage with the question of how our own research practices as a scientific community studying meaning-laden technology are in themselves practices of epistemic world-building. We welcome contributions that explore, challenge, and reflect on this very question from diverse perspectives and methodologies. Dialogues on Digital Society Special Issue: Authoritarianism in the Digital Age Proposal deadline: May 16, 2025 Submission deadline: July 1, 2025 Max length: 2,000 words, including references. Events in the U.S. since the 2024 presidential election have brought into stark relief that digital technologies, industries, and systems are central to the growing intensity of reactionary and conservative politics and the expanding influence and activities of authoritarian movements across the world. While these political agendas and related governance systems have a long and wide-spread history, their increased presence is fraying the global economic, social, and political order in place since post-WWII accords. What the role of the digital is, has been, or could be, in this emerging geopolitical landscape is the theme of this special issue of Dialogues on Digital Society. Digital technologies are implicated in contemporary authoritarian politics in a variety of ways. Social media platforms and AI-powered bots have long been recognised for enabling the creation, distribution, and amplification of reactionary political views. Remotely controlled drones drop bombs on civilians, relying on satellite technologies owned by digital media oligarchs with close ties to authoritarian leaders. Governments seek control over the digital information landscape, demanding deletion of “unauthorised content” from websites and libraries, while governmental communication is at times routed through unofficial platforms, potentially avoiding scrutiny, recording, and/or archiving. States draw on granular surveillance data from bespoke or compliant apps and platforms to police their populations, often in the guise of public safety measures. Digital infrastructures such as satellites or undersea cables become political weapons, used to force compliance by nations reliant on their capabilities, or remain under threat of disruption by rogue political actors. At the same time, digital technologies are vital tools for the organising of resistance against authoritarian incursions into social and economic liberties. News updates and information about personal and collective safety are shared through encrypted digital systems. Acts of genocide are livestreamed. Protests, street demonstrations, and direct interventions against authoritarian acts are instigated and promoted through digital platforms, while culture jamming online protests seek to block up digitally mediated governance systems. Archivists, librarians, and ordinary citizens mobilise to preserve digital records. Solidarity messages created and shared online sustain individuals as they navigate an increasingly perilous sociopolitical landscape. We welcome short commentary articles (1,500-2,000 words) that report on, reflect on, critique, and illuminate our picture of the role of digital technologies in building, sustaining, and challenging authoritarian rule. We especially welcome papers that place this role in the longer histories of these political systems and those that explore these dynamics as they are occurring within a variety of jurisdictions. We are particularly keen to include analysis from across the global geopolitical landscape and not just the present U.S. moment - that is, an analysis of digitally-mediated authoritarianism in Asia, Africa, South and Central America, North America, and Europe. CFP Final call: Digital Geographies 2025, Data Voids, negativity and refusal

With apologies for cross-posting and re-posting. Please see below a CFP for a Special Session at 4th Digital Geographies Conference, 3-4 November 2025, Lisbon. Data Voids: Understanding Digital Geographies of the Built Environment through Negativity and Refusal Emerging work in cultural geography has called on researchers to consider the (im)potential of 'negative' spaces and affects, asking what can be done with voids, limits and (in)capacities of different kinds (e.g. Bissell et al, 2021). Meanwhile, across media and cultural studies, critical data studies and feminist and political geography there is growing attention to the possibilities of refusal (e.g. James et al., 2023), particularly refusal as a collective and generative response to datafied systems. Both bodies of work are concerned with gaps, absences, silences and negation, though with varied foci and orientations toward action. Our session seeks to bring these literatures into conversation, with a particular focus on digital data and the built environment. The governance of built environments is increasingly informed and narrated through digital data - from 'evidence-based' planning, to the modelling of land/housing markets, and uses of 'proptech' to facilitate investment or discipline tenants, data seem almost as foundational as bricks and mortar. Yet such data are often characterised by absences, gaps and silences. Such absences prompt initiatives to fix, 'free' and/or repurpose the data in order to enhance access and transparency. However, recent work problematises transparency as a universal response to data-driven systems, pointing to refusal and data justice as approaches pursuing a structural shift relative to data harms. The session will seek theoretical and empirical contributions pertaining to questions including, but not limited to: * What might an attention to data voids from the perspective of negative geographies and refusal illuminate? * How do absences of data shape the built environment? * How do acts of refusal in the face of data-driven governance generate meaningful political and spatial alternatives? * How might methodological approaches to data be developed or reconceived through working with refusal and negativity? * How do we reckon with refusal alongside the politics of data suppression? * How do we register what or who is left absent (unbuilt, unseen or unheard) by/through data in its shaping of built spaces? IFIP-ICTSS Invites: Full papers (12 to 15 pages plus at most 2 extra pages for references in the one-column Springer LNCS format) describing original research contributions with sufficient evidence for the interest of the proposed approach. Industry papers (12 to 15 pages plus at most 2 extra pages for references in the one-column Springer LNCS format) describing original research or experience report conducted within an industrial environment or in collaboration with an industry partner. Short papers or work-in-progress papers (up to 6 pages plus at most 1 extra page for references in the one-column Springer LNCS format) describing academic work in progress or tool implementations, as well as testing processes, achievements and feedback on testing methods for industrial case studies. Journal-First. The aim of the Journal-First (JF) submission category is to further enrich the program of ICTSS, as well as to provide an overall more flexible path to publication and dissemination of original research that is within the scope of ICTSS. A submission in this category must adhere to the following criteria: ■ It should be clearly within the scope of the conference. ■ It should be recent: it should have been accepted and made publicly available in a journal (online or in print) by January 1, 2023 or more recently. ■ It has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, Journal- First tracks of other conferences or workshops. ■ The submission has to be in the form of a 4-page extended abstract and has to provide a concise summary of the published journal paper. ■ It must be marked as such in the submission’s, and must explicitly include full bibliographic details (including a DOI) of the journal publication they are based on. Since the referenced journal papers have already been reviewed and accepted by the corresponding journals, submissions in the JF category will not be reviewed again for technical content. Submissions will be judged on the basis of the above criteria, but also considering how well they would complement the conference’s technical program. Accepted submissions in this category will be part of the proceedings of ICTSS 2025, with the title equal to the original title of the article with the prefix. Call for Industry & Use Case Presentations The Industry & Use Case track at SEMANTiCS welcomes submissions that present use cases and industry adoption of semantic technology. Solutions that deal with semantic processing of data and/or information in areas like Linked Data, Knowledge Graphs, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Publishing, Thesaurus and/or Ontology management, and any related fields. How do the semantic components support the process from data to knowledge? - *Success Criteria for / Benefit of the Semantic Solution *Which factors (conscious and unconscious) have been crucial to the success of your project? Which obstacles did you face? How can you measure the benefit of your solution? How does the organisation benefit from your solution? - *Prospects and Recommendations *What are the next steps planned in your project? Can you give recommendations with respect to development / deployment of semantic solutions within organisational / corporate settings? - *Demo (if applicable) *Prepare a short demonstration of your tool / service. *Review and Evaluation Criteria* Every submission will be reviewed by the Programme Committee. Submissions to this track will be evaluated according to the following criteria: - Your presentation is relevant to industry and industrial purposes. It illustrates how semantic technologies / solutions contribute to or improve existing businesses and / or generate new ones. - The presented solution has already been deployed and / or has been tested in a practical environment – at least prototypically. - Your presentation is well-structured and does bring across its message. - The topic is well described and covers enough explanations, examples, use cases, graphics, etc. - Novelty: The topic covered is new to your industry – not necessarily new to business in general In case your presentation will be accepted, we will provide you with detailed information on organisational matters according to the selection of submissions and conference participation.
