It’s this question that Gary Hall and his collaborators have been addressing for over twenty years with experimental publishing projects such as Open Humanities Press, Liquid and Living Books, Radical Open Access Collective, and the Culture-led Re-Commoning of Cities. Unsettling received ideas of the author and book, originality and copyright, real and artificial intelligence, these uncommon communities of theorist-mediums have been testing some of the ‘non-modernist-liberal’ modes of creating and sharing knowledge that are enabled by various media technologies, from writing and print through photography and video to computers and GenAI. By thinking outside the masked black box that renders the anthropocentric, Euro-Western knowledge-making practices of the arts and humanities invisible – ensuring the human is kept ontologically separate from the nonhuman, be it animals, the planet or algorithmic machines – they show there’s no such thing as the human, the nonhuman already being in(the)human. *Masked Media *is one such experimental project. It is not a 'human-authored' work. Instead, the thinking within it has been generated by a radically relational inhuman assemblage that includes AI and more. Although the book appears under a real name – ‘Gary Hall’ – which, like Banksy and Karen Eliot, acts as a mask, it is not the intellectual property of a singular human individual, and is published under a Collective Conditions for Re-Use licence to reflect this. Hi AoIR, We’re delighted to announce the upcoming workshop Workers Governing Technologies: Collective Strategies Across Contexts, taking place in Toronto on September 25 and 26. This will be an in-person and free event. For those who cannot attend in person, we will later share a collective trilingual document summarizing the outcomes of the workshop. Job: Fully funded 4-year PhD position - Centre for Media and Journalism Studies - University of Groningen, the Netherlands Fully funded PhD position (1.0 FTE) with the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen, in the project “Tracing sociotechnical imaginaries of digital journalism, 1995-2025”. Project description & supervision team Digital technologies have long shaped the debates on journalism’s future. These debates often emphasize technology as a solution for journalism’s struggles. In doing so, they have also limited the directions in which journalism could actually develop, and elided critical reflections on the complex relationship between journalism and technology. This project addresses these issues by studying sociotechnical imaginaries constructed in the debates about journalism and technology between 1995 and 2025 within the geographical context of Northern Europe. From the introduction of the web, through to our current debates around AI, it studies how journalists, technologists, and other actors have engaged in the introduction, negotiation, and normalization of new technologies. As different actors with diverging interests shape the debate over journalism and technology, the project scrutinizes their competing norms and values concerning journalism and technology. By critically examining how technology has been presented as a necessary and self-evident driver of journalistic change, this research offers a critical history of journalism’s recent past. This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to work in an internationally recognized research centre and gain valuable research experience at a top-ranked European university. As a PhD candidate, you will develop your own research project in consultation with the supervisory team. You will conduct independent and original academic research and report results via peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and ultimately a PhD dissertation. Dear AoIR community, This is a little reminder of the ongoing CFP of our special issue 'Gender Politics and Moral Norms Across Media' for the journal Media and Communication. The abstract submission link is now open (till 15 September): https://www.cogitatiopress.com/mediaandcommunication/issue/futureissues#i505 About the issue In recent years, we have witnessed a growing body of research focused on identity politics, public shaming, and social outrage in the contemporary media landscape. Morality is often at the core of these debates. At times, societies are gripped by moral panics (Cohen, 1972/2011) and attribute the cause of such feelings of panic to certain media products such as TV dramas, reality TV, or advertising (Critcher, 2006; Guo, 2017). Yet, evidence that these media products contribute to audiences’ moral imagination and reflection in a positive sense increases (Bilandzic et al., 2017; Krijnen, 2009, 2011; Krijnen & Tan, 2009; Krijnen & Verboord, 2011, 2016). On social media platforms, the entanglement of morality with actions of gender-based harassment, status-seeking, and intergroup conflicts (Huang, 2021; Marwick, 2021) always dominates public attention. On the one hand, the existing moral norms and standards are often used to legitimize individual online practices and even to mobilize collective actions; on the other hand, the state and market actors draw on moral norms to regulate and moderate media content under the name of protecting public interests. This thematic issue aims to explore the historical trajectory and continuity of the vital role of media in shaping social dynamics and moral norms, particularly through the lens of gender, from a global perspective. We welcome contributions that empirically and theoretically engage with the topic of gender, media, and morality, and encourage contributors to reflect on the topic with its intersections of class, race, geopolitics, etc. For example, and not limited to: * In the process of formation and mobilization of moral norms, what roles do media play? * How can we critically study, analyze, and compare the complex moralized rhetoric across media? * What are the political and social consequences when the moralized rhetoric is used to target specific social groups (i.e. women and LGBTQ communities)? * What kinds of power dynamics between individuals, social institutions, market actors, and nation-states are reflected in the construction of moral norms?
