Hey AoIR, The 4S Conference will be here in Toronto this year, October 7-10, and I’m organizing an open panel on Worker-led Techno-futures. I would like to invite you to read the abstract below and submit a 250-word abstract by April 30. There are also many other excellent panels that have been accepted, which you can check on the 4S website. https://www.4sonline.org/accepted_open_panels_toronto.php Worker-Led Techno-Futures Organizer: Rafael Grohmann Whether through social movements, labor unions, cooperatives, or solidarity-based collective arrangements, workers are actively imagining and configuring techno-futures from their own vantage points. This open panel investigates how workers globally are reclaiming agency to design and govern sociotechnical systems. It focuses on worker-led processes of imagining, designing, maintaining, and regulating technologies and infrastructures. We are especially interested in the frictions of practice: the sociotechnical challenges workers face, the failures and breakdowns that accompany experimentation, and the ways worker-governed projects confront technopower in workplaces, markets, and other places. How do worker-led initiatives prefigure alternative techno-futures, and where do they encounter limits? This open panel invites paper proposals that analyze worker-led techno-futures through STS frameworks, including (but not limited to) labor and infrastructure studies, co-design and participatory methods, feminist STS, intersectionality, decolonial and Indigenous STS, platform cooperativism and digital solidarity economies. It encourages submissions that explore the following inquiries: What sociotechnical systems are workers building, repurposing, reappropriating, hacking, or refusing? How do worker collectives organize co-design, maintenance, and decision-making over time? What are the sociotechnical challenges, frictions, and failures inherent in these worker-led technologies? What values are embedded in worker-led technologies (e.g., solidarity, care, sociotechnical justice), and how are these values negotiated in practice? Which workers are involved in building these technologies, and what forms of participation do they enact? Which techno-futures are they prefiguring and how are they dealing with technopower? We welcome contributions from diverse geographic contexts and disciplinary backgrounds, and we particularly encourage submissions that highlight underrepresented voices and Majority World perspectives. -- See you in Toronto! Submission Guidelines and Instructions We invite three kinds of submissions to the Industry Track: • Enlightening Talk or Tool Demo: 1-2 page abstract (OR a Power Point presentation OR a video for a tool demo). • Short paper: 4-pages (including references). • Full paper: 6-pages (including references). All the submissions will be reviewed by members of the Industry Track Program Committee. Accepted papers (with an abstract) will be included in the ISSRE Supplemental Proceedings and submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore. Call for Papers: Sounding Things: Props, Material Culture, and Accessories in Popular Music Edited Collection Abstract Deadline: May 1, 2026 Abstract Length: 350–500 words Editors: Kate Galloway, Paxton Haven, and Mike Levine Popular music is not only heard—it is handled, worn, staged, circulated, collected, and displayed. From glittering boots and gold chains to drum machines, masks, vinyl records, protest signs, friendship bracelets, and TikTok filters, popular music cultures are built from things. Objects do not merely accompany music; they shape performance, structure persona, mediate identity, circulate value, and materialize power. This edited collection, Sounding Things: Props, Material Culture, and Accessories in Popular Music, centers the material culture of popular music. We seek contributions that examine how props, wearable accessories, stage objects, technological devices, fan artifacts, and digital commodities participate in the production of meaning across popular music cultures. Drawing on popular music studies, ethnomusicology, media studies, fashion studies, performance studies, cultural studies, sound studies, feminist theory, and STS, the volume asks: ● How do props shape musical performance and choreograph the body? ● How do accessories materialize genre, race, gender, sexuality, and class? ● How do objects participate in the construction of star persona and brand identity? ● What is the “social life” of musical things—from production to circulation to afterlife? ● How do fan-made objects generate affective communities? ● How do digital objects (NFTs, avatars, filters, skins, AI-generated artifacts) function as musical props? ● How do material objects mediate authenticity, resistance, nostalgia, or spectacle? We welcome historically grounded, ethnographic, theoretical, and interdisciplinary approaches. Contributors may draw on object biography, performance analysis, archival research, political economy, media archaeology, feminist and queer materialisms, or critical race methodologies. We particularly encourage submissions that engage transnational contexts, marginalized communities, and historically underexamined genres. Call for Papers Dossier: “Dilemmas and Challenges of Regulating Digital Platforms in the Context of Political Communication” ECO-Pós – Revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação da UFRJ Volume 29, Issue 2 Many of the dilemmas shaping public debate in contemporary societies are fundamentally communicational in nature and are directly linked to the growing mediatization of everyday life and the digitalization of social, political, and economic interactions. In the context of recurring diagnoses of democratic crises, multiple forms of disinformation, hate speech, political radicalization, and profound transformations in the world of work, a wide range of social, political, and legal actors have been called upon to debate the regulation of contemporary communication systems, characterized by the coexistence of digital and traditional media. The emergence and popularization of digital platforms have produced a new structural transformation of the public sphere, as argued by Jürgen Habermas. As a result, social and political phenomena with direct implications for the foundations of democratic societies have intensified or taken on new and challenging forms, including political polarization, ideological radicalization, and epistemic crises related to the delegitimization of science and democratic institutions. These dynamics are often associated with platform-related structural determinants, such as monetization models, content curation mechanisms, and the limited or absent transparency surrounding digital advertising regimes. This thematic dossier aims to bring together scholarly articles that engage with debates on the regulation of digital media in the field of political communication, while maintaining an open and critical stance toward regulatory approaches as forms of social, economic, and political control. Dear all, I am pleased to share that our article, Extraction-by-design: Auditing infrastructures of datafication in baby-tracking apps, has been published open-access in Internet Policy Review: https://policyreview.info/articles/analysis/datafication-baby-tracking-apps Led by Dr. Jennifer Pybus, Canada Research Chair in Data, Democracy, and AI at the Department of Politics, York University, this article presents our mixed-method audit of 14 of the most downloaded Android baby-tracking apps in the EU, examining how sensitive health data about (un)born babies, pregnancies, and family caregiving routines is shared with third parties, often without meaningful consent. We introduce the concept of "extraction-by-design" to describe how routine caregiving inputs are captured and repurposed for behavioural profiling and monetisation, and call for policy interventions that treat infant data privacy as a matter of collective public interest. I'm happy to share our new edited collection Critical Political Economy and Southern Approaches to AI: A Dialogue <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-032-14090-6>, published a week ago with Palgrave Macmillan. *About the book: *This book presents a dialogue between two seemingly incompatible bodies of social theories - Critical Political Economy and Southern approaches - to the study of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In doing so, the book presents scholarly engagement with the ways in which AI is being experienced in sites in the Global South, with authors exploring questions of sociality, further entrenching of inequities along labour and caste lines, socio-legal ramifications of digital IDs, and undesired outcomes such as deepfakes and their integration in the political ecosystem, among others.
