CFP - Semantic Web for Social Good workshop at ISWC-2018
by Hemant Purohit 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

Workshop: Semantic Web for Social Good (SW4SG) Conference: ISWC2018 Call for Submissions: https://sw4sg.github.io/ISWC2018/ ****** Submission Deadline: June 1, 2018 (11:59 PM HAST) Decisions to Authors: June 27, 2018 ****** Workshop Location: Monterrey, CA Workshop Date: October 9, 2018 Workshop Goals: Many Social Good topics can benefit from the sort of unplanned, cross-domain, rapid-prototyping analysis that Linked Data makes possible. We’ve learned that measuring topics like poverty, health, economic opportunity and equality can be substantially more nuanced by considering broader categories of data than organizations traditionally collect for their own use. There have been individual past presentations on topics that involve Semantic Web for Social Good. This workshop is intended to present multiple topics, to better identify intersections, overlaps, opportunities for accelerated advancement, and opportunities for shared abstractions. To generate the best discussion on shared domain and cross-domain uses, we encourage submissions from the full array of Social Good topics. Submissions: Because we are looking to promote discussion about an emerging area, our goal is to be open to new or early stage ideas and work. Please submit extended abstracts (2 pages), short papers (2 to 5 pages), posters, or demos. Written documents should be in PDF format and not anonymized. Posters should be in PDF, PNG, or GIF. Demos should be submitted as video in MP4 of no longer than 7 minutes; demos must be submitted with an abstract or short paper. Submissions to SW4SG on EasyChair. Committee Chairs: K Krasnow Waterman, Visiting Scientist, MIT; CEO, LawTechIntersect, LLC. Deborah McGuinness, Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. James Hendler, Director of the Rensselaer Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA), Tetherless World, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Reminder CfA: Open Access Book and Workshop in Rotterdam on Vigilant Audiences
by Daniel Trottier 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

We wish to remind you about the following book project and workshop, which includes modest travel funds for contributors. Abstracts are due at the end of next week (April 27th) Call for abstracts: Vigilant Audiences: Understanding Scrutiny, Denunciations, and Shaming in Digital Media Use. https://www.eur.nl/en/eshcc/news/call-abstracts-vigilant-audiences (includes link to call PDF) **Please circulate widely** We are seeking contributors for an open-access edited volume as well as a two-day workshop in October, on the topic of digital vigilante audiences. This proposed edited collection concerns media users in terms of their vigilant engagements with others. By looking at practices in which digital media users respond to individuals breaching legal and moral boundaries, we can better understand their motivations, but also the broader conceptual and societal implications of these practices. Today’s media landscape allows for scrutiny and intervention in the lives of others. Conventional outlets such as the press and reality television are supplemented and even supplanted by digital media users, who can report and comment on events through any number of mobile applications and other web-based platforms. They may denounce high-profile crimes, such as terrorism, sexual abuse, pedophilia, or participation in riots. They may also target comparatively benign transgressions such as petty theft, bad parking, or disorderly conduct (whether in embodied public spaces or online). In some cases, unaffiliated citizens may play a primary role in breaking a story, for example, by publishing footage of a criminal event to a public forum. In other cases they may respond to a story that broke through a public broadcaster, but shape the visibility and public perception of that story through vitriolic commentary, crowdsourced information about the perpetrator, among other practices. Contemporary media systems may be considered as hybrids (Chadwick 2013) in the sense that journalists and other media actors mobilise and in some cases even depend on their audiences, who play an active role in ‘making’ a story. While media scholars talk about news-making assemblages (ibid.), and criminologists talk about surveillant assemblages in the context of police scrutiny (Haggerty and Ericson 2000), we may consider the extent to which any single instance of user-involved vigilantism involves data flows that implicate both criminological and journalistic spheres. Vigilantism and shaming as social practices have long histories that predate digital media. Yet the adoption of services like Twitter, along with the popularity of populist social news platforms and the ubiquity of comment sections on news sites means that these practices are accessible to any user, and may have a lasting impact on the lives of those who have been targeted. Vigilant media use not only impacts the lives of those who have been denounced, but also may serve to discipline and otherwise govern over those who share categorical affiliations (on the basis of gender, ethnicity, sexual identity, political views, economic status, among others) and may fear negative repercussions. In other words, mediated vigilance and shaming may contribute to one’s own self-scrutiny, and may shape everyday practices and politics of visibility. Research on vigilante movements is typically concerned with the complexities and contradictions in relations between states and citizens: one the one hand, citizens seem to operate in excess of the state, yet they also share similar objectives (ex: ‘safe streets’) and hegemonic cultural values. This remains the case with digital media and digital vigilantism, and in addition the relations between media outlets and media users warrant conceptual and empirical attention. Contributions to this edited collection will address contemporary digital media practices involving users both consuming and participating in the denunciation of other individuals. We welcome scholarship engaged with a range of (cross-)disciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to sociology, criminology, cultural and media studies. Contributions are not limited to any national or regional context, and we are especially interested in cases and contexts that have not received prior scholarly attention. In particular, we seek chapters that make theoretical and empirical contributions in response to the following questions: - What role do audiences play in denunciatory media (ex: tabloid press; crime-based reality television; populist websites)? - How do the press portray user-led shaming practices? How might these representations vary according to social and political context? - In what ways do established and emerging mediated vigilante practices shape each other (ex: the relation between Twitter use and journalism, or between covering a shaming campaign and contributing to it)? - How might either traditional or entrepreneurial forms of populism (Fieschi and Heywood 2004) contribute to contemporary denunciatory practices? - What role might less visible media practices such as ‘listening’ or ‘lurking’ play in mediated shaming, notably in terms of scrutiny or in terms of composing imagined audiences? - What role do digital media (including mobile apps, social platforms and other web-based services) play in scrutiny and denunciation? - How might scrutiny and denunciatory practices either reinforce or contest categorical forms of discrimination and violence? - How might the public (whether in their role as audiences, educators, parents, guardians, etc.) modify their media use in response to (the possibility of) public scrutiny, denunciation and harassment? - What kinds of subject positions are typically invoked in the mediated representations of outrage (ex: the ‘failson’, diaosi, etc..) Contributing authors are also invited to participate in a two-day workshop on this topic in October, to be held in Rotterdam, NL. This will be an opportunity for authors to present their works in progress and receive constructive feedback. Modest funds will be able to partly support travel and accommodation for contributors. Final versions of chapters should be no longer than 7500 words, including references and notes. We intend to submit a full proposal to Open Book Publishers (https://www.openbookpublishers.com/) a nonprofit open-access publisher that has expressed an interest in this collection. We are currently seeking extended abstracts of approximately 800 words. Please send this (following the guidelines below) to Daniel Trottier ( trottier(a)eshcc.eur.nl) no later than Friday, April 27th, 2018. Tentative schedule Extended abstracts due: 27th April 2018 Notification of accepted contributions: 15th May 2018 Workshop in Rotterdam: early October 2018 (exact dates TBA) First draft of chapters due: 15th December 2018 Feedback on chapters returned: 15th February 2019 Final versions of chapters due: 1st May 2019 Extended abstract structure In order to be considered, abstracts should adhere to the following structure (approx. 800 words, please address each aspect separately and include the specific headlines in your abstract): - Contribution title - Full name of the author(s) - Institutional affiliation(s) and position(s) - e-mail address(es) 1) Purpose: What are the overall tasks and research questions the chapter addresses? 2) Scope: What is the scope of the analysis? This may include a time period for the analysis, geographic scope, phenomena that are either included or excluded in the analysis, or particular social spheres and their interrelations. 3) Method: Which theoretical approaches and empirical research methods are employed for answering the research questions and attaining the chapter’s task? 4) Results: What are the main results presented in the paper? 5) Conclusions: What are the main conclusions of the conducted research for concerned scholarly fields of study? 6) Recommendations: What are the main recommendations for scholarly research, as well as other concerned actors such as citizens, the press, digital media platforms and government branches?

Cfp: Workshop “Media Manipulation” | 29 June 2018 | Cambridge, UK
by Samuel Lengen 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

Call for papers: Workshop “Media manipulation: ideologies of influence and political economies of intervention in a digital world” 29 June 2018 | Cambridge, UK The StoryLab Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University and the ERC-funded Project “Situating Free Speech: European Parrhesia in Comparative Perspective” at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge, invite paper submissions for a workshop on the topic of “media manipulation”. Manipulation — of attention, opinion, action — has been a salient concern in the recent Euro-American takes on digital media and their role in politics. While the question of media and power is by no means new, our workshop aims to critically engage recent concerns with manipulation through an empirically informed discussion of ideologies and political economies of mediated influence. Our goal is to situate manipulation — as an idea, practice, and analytical perspective on social relations — by bringing together empirically and theoretically minded papers that explore the relationship between media and social influence in diverse geographical and historical contexts — both in and beyond Western liberal democracies. We propose to organise the workshop around two foci: vernacular ideologies of mediated influence and political economies of manipulative interventions. The focus on ideologies brings to attention how people imagine agents, objects, media and mechanisms of manipulation as well as how they incorporate them into narratives of influence or indeed into political projects of manipulation. What cultural assumptions about agency and autonomy, freedom and constraint, causation and responsibility inform understandings of manipulation? How do cultural ideas of action frame manipulation as practice; what technologies of control do they inform? And what forms does manipulation take in response to these vernacular ideologies in the context of political orders other than contemporary liberal democracies? The focus on political economies brings attention to the view of power as manipulation. How is manipulation, as an expertise of power, arranged and mediated in technological, cultural, and social settings? Who manipulates and by what means? What modes of manipulation do specific media technologies afford? How is manipulation articulated in relation to digital media practices, as well as broader grammars of influence, which inform political orders other than liberal democracy, for instance, in Russia or China? Please find a google document version of the call here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1aGaiClfBwwKzf0A3hU1BAswH8m32Jyrz. We invite contributions from across the social sciences and humanities and encourage presentations that feature work-in-progress. Participants will be expected to give a 15-20 min presentation, followed by an extensive discussion. Papers will not be pre-circulated. To apply, please send a Word or PDF document containing your name, institutional affiliation, email address, the proposed title of your paper and an abstract (max 300 words) to Taras Fedirko (tf338(a)cam.ac.uk) and Samuel Lengen (samuel.lengen(a)anglia.ac.uk) by 2 May. We will inform applicants by 10 May. We have some funding available and will do our best to cover travel costs and accommodation. Our allocation of financial support will prioritise graduate students and precariously employed colleagues. This is an open event. If you wish to attend, please register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/media-manipulation-ideologies-of-influence-a…. There is no participation fee, free lunch is included. CFP: Digital Transactions in Asia Conference Event
by Julian Hopkins 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

*Call for Papers* *Digital Transactions in Asia Conference* Manila, October 10-12, 2018 *Rationale* The reconfiguration of social, cultural, economic and political relationships in parallel with the pervasive application of digital technologies has been regarded as an epochal shift in the Western world. In contemporary Asia, the breathtaking rapidity and scale of digitisation provides us with an even greater remaking and reinvigorating of human relationships. This is an era where rapid commercial growth across the region proceeds in tandem with the spread of digital media devices. For ordinary people, social media platforms offer new economic opportunities along with the monetisation of the personal and the everyday. In the public domain, Asian state systems are having to contend with explosions of popular expression, public debate and political mobilisation, even as these activities are highly contested and contestable. Asian markets are increasingly determined by flows of virtual capital, information commodities, consumers and labour. In this context, it is increasingly evident that the rise of a Digital Asia is accompanied by new aspirations and understandings of modernisation, participation and development. This conference considers the instances and processes through which new sets of social, economic and political transactions are being established between citizens and states, markets and publics, cultures and commodities in a Digital Asia. The conference, to be held from October 10-12, 2018 at the campus of De La Salle University in Manila, is co-hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queensland and the Department of Communication, De La Salle University in Manila. The conference will include two full days of presentations for a public audience 10-11th October, followed by a research workshop for paper presenters on 12th October. Given the inter- and trans-disciplinary nature of its theme, the conference is intended to be of interest to researchers from a diverse variety of backgrounds and disciplinary orientations in the Humanities and Social Sciences. We will also consider submissions of creative and technical works, along with professional contributions from industry and non-governmental organisations. *Submission Guidelines* We are currently inviting abstract submissions (500 words) addressing the following themes: ● Development and (In)equalities ● Currencies and Commodities ● Populism and Public Speech ● Mobilities and mobilisation ● Intimacies and Moral Economies ● Governance and Citizenship ● Mobile and Informal Economies ● Innovation and Disruption A limited number of bursaries covering economy air travel and accommodation for the duration of the event are available on a competitive basis for paper presenters working at institutions within the ASEAN region. If you wish to be considered for a bursary, please indicate your interest and affiliation in your abstract submission. We will subsequently contact you regarding the bursary selection process that will occur in June 2018. For all selected participants, a final paper of 6,000 words will be requested by 31 July 2018 for review in the SAGE journal *Media International Australia* and for inclusion in an edited volume with a major international publisher. For further enquiries and for the submission of abstracts, please contact the conference organising committee via digitaltransactions.asia(a)gmail.com *Key dates* ● May 9, 2018: Deadline for the submission of abstracts ● May 28, 2018: Acceptance of abstracts/papers ● June 30, 2018: Results of travel grant application ● July 31, 2018: Final paper submission ● October 10-12, 2018: Conference and workshops *Organising committee* ● Adrian Athique (University of Queensland) ● Cheryll Soriano (De La Salle University) ● Sun Sun Lim (Singapore University of Technology and Design) ● Emma Baulch (Queensland University of Technology / Monash U Malaysia) ● Jozon Lorenzana (Ateneo de Manila University) *Venue* The conference will be held in the campus of De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila. De La Salle University positions itself as a learner-centered and research institution of higher learning active in community engagement. The university serves as a significant resource for the Philippines by developing leaders and achievers in business, public service, education, science and technology, and the arts. Taking on the challenges of a global society, DLSU actively collaborates with international partner institutions such as the ASEAN University Network, of which it is a founding member. DLSU is the first university in the region to be conferred by the said body the Quality Mark at the Institutional Level. Nestled in the heart of Manila, De La Salle University is situated in a historic city with a vibrant culture and diversity. *Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queensland* The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Queensland is dedicated to high level research with a focus on Intellectual and Literary History, Critical and Cultural Studies, the History of Emotions and Science and Society. The Critical and Cultural Studies programme examines the role of culture within processes of social change, both as a means of expression and as a central motivation for human actions. We undertake critical enquiries that examine new forms of technology, the significance of cultural differences and the relationship between cultural identities and the experience of everyday life. Our research on media technologies and social change seeks to explore new areas of interaction between academic expertise and the public. Our focus on the experiences of ordinary people has inspired substantive studies of youth, gender and social inclusion in Australia. CCS has also made a long term commitment to developing Cultural Studies research in Asia, with innovative work in China, Japan and India being prominent examples of our research partnerships in the region. *Department of Communication, De La Salle University* The Department of Communication of De La Salle University aims to be a community of reflective, innovative and strategic communicators driving sustainable and inclusive change. Part of DLSU’s College of Liberal Arts, we bring together the humanities and the social sciences with our three academic programs and research areas: Communication Arts, Organizational Communication, and (Applied) Media Studies. Our programs provide a balance of theory and practice, preparing students to work as communication leaders and ethical media professionals. Our Faculty and students engage in research and creative media projects that examine the role of communication and media in everyday social and political processes and dynamics. Our Faculty, composed of academics and industry practitioners, are involved in diverse research streams: new media and social change, health communication, environmental communication, digital labor, organizational communication, queer media studies, journalism, media literacy, film/media criticism, and public relations. Some of our Faculty are celebrated industry professionals: filmmakers, journalists, public relations practitioners, writers, designers, and film/television/digital media producers.

Dear AoIRists I am looking for literature dealing with attitudes (of users, non-users, people in general etc.) toward "smart applications" defined very broadly (~AI/big data/IoT/wearable devices...) mainly in the context of the level of trustworthiness/intelligence/effectiveness/impressiveness of such algorithm-based, data-based software. Would very much appreciate any recommendation on relevant publications. Thank you all! Nili Steinfeld School of Communication Ariel University

CyberSciTech 2018 CFP, Athens 12-15 Aug. 2018
by Kevin Wang 15 Apr '18

15 Apr '18

[Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 3rd IEEE Cyber Science and Technology Congress (CyberSciTech 2018) http://cyber-science.org/2018/ Athens, Greece, 12-15 August 2018 Cyber Science for Cyber-enabled New Worlds INTRODUCTION --------------------- The modern digitized world has led to the emergence of a new paradigm on global information networks and infrastructures known as Cyberspace, which bring seamless integration of physical, social and mental spaces. Cyberspace is becoming an integral part of our daily life from learning and entertainment to business and cultural activities. To address these emerging challenges, there is a need to establish new science and research portfolios that incorporate cyber-physical, cyber-social and cyber-mental technologies together in a coherent manner to deliver the vision of Cyberspace. This is the aim of the IEEE Cyber Science and Technology Congress (CyberSciTech), which was successfully held first in Auckland (New Zealand) in 2016 and then in Orlando (USA) in 2017. IEEE CyberSciTech 2018 is to continually offer a common platform for scientists, researchers and engineers to share their latest ideas and to exchange the latest developments and outcomes in their research and technologies, with a broad scope of cyber-related science, technology and application topics to understand and shape cyber-enabled new worlds.
