This is for the reviewers and chairs to clearly bid and handle the papers. Once the paper is accepted, the word, such as “Survey:”, can be removed from the camera-ready copy. During this date window, authors are encouraged to submit a proposal for review. mediastudies.press welcomes submissions from scholars across media, communication, and film studies. SPAM New Media Festival 2025 September 12th-14th, 2025 (Seattle, WA, US) Open Call for Creative Work Submissions Deadline: May 16, 2025 5pm PT SPAM New Media Festival invites artists and practitioners working with digital, experimental and emerging artforms to submit work for the 2025 Festival. We seek proposals for creative work to be presented at the Georgetown Steam Plant in Seattle. Potential submissions include, but are not limited to, interactive and immersive works and installations, video and projection mapping, audio and music installations and live performances, artist talks, workshops, demonstrations, and screenings. While we ask that applicants take the venue’s unique qualities into account, submissions do not need to respond specifically to the site in theme or concept. We see the festival as a vessel/container for holding and germinating artist projects in different stages of recognition and development, and welcome contributions which entangle with, emerge from, or leak into these different nodes of engagement with digital art and culture. These submissions are expected to present comprehensive, mature research findings, including in-depth theoretical or practical insights. - *Short papers* should be a *maximum of 6 pages* (excluding references). These submissions can include preliminary findings, innovative ideas, or position papers that aim to spark discussion and exploration. References are not included in the page count, so authors may add additional pages for relevant citations if needed. The text of all the reviews (excluding the scores) of all the accepted papers will be posted on the conference website with the basic bibliographic metadata of the reviewed submission (i.e. title and authors), and it will be archived on Zenodo as publicly available material. A digital world in relentless movement—from artificial intelligence to ubiquitous computing—has been captured and reinvented as a monoculture by Silicon Valley "big tech" and venture capital firms. Yet very little is discussed in the public sphere about existing alternatives. Based on long-term field research across San Francisco, Tokyo, and Shenzhen, Common Circuits explores a transnational network of hacker spaces that stand as potent, but often invisible, alternatives to the dominant technology industry. In what ways have hackers challenged corporate projects of digital development? How do hacker collectives prefigure more just technological futures through community projects? Luis Felipe R. Murillo responds to these urgent questions with an analysis of the hard challenges of collaborative, autonomous community-making through technical objects conceived by hackers as convivial, shared technologies. Through rich explorations of hacker space histories and biographical sketches of hackers who participate in them, Murillo describes the social and technical conditions that allowed for the creation of community projects such as anonymity and privacy networks to counter mass surveillance; community-made monitoring devices to measure radioactive contamination; and small-scale open hardware fabrication for the purposes of technological autonomy. Murillo shows how hacker collectives point us toward brighter technological futures—a renewal of the "digital commons"—where computing projects are constantly being repurposed for the common good. Author Luis Felipe R. Murillo is an Assistant Professor in Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, whose work is dedicated to the study of computing from an anthropological perspective. Across several research projects within and beyond the Global North, his work investigates how social movements and technoscientific experts design and implement common technologies as responses to pressing social, technical, and environmental concerns.
