Self-Expression, Self-Actualization, and Media Experimentation (SESAME): A Dialogue and Ruminations A symposium at the ASIS&T 2026 Annual Meeting (Bangkok, Thailand) ( https://www.asist.org/am2026/am26/) Sponsors: U.S. West Chapter, SIG-USE Website: https://sesame-asist.github.io/ Background Social media platforms provide opportunities for people to connect not only with others, but also with themselves. Posting to and engaging with social media can be viewed as a form of active self-making - through content creation and content feed curation, people can form better understandings of themselves by constructing and exploring different realities (Takahashi, 2010). In online spaces, the interactions that contribute to identity and personality development are hyper-responsive and hyper-mediated: social feedback is nearly instantaneous and can be amplified by the platform itself, becoming a form of currency that is used, whether consciously or subconsciously, as a component of self-reflective identity formation processes. However, there is tremendous diversity in how people interact with and engage in self-expression using digital media. Some might use video or images, such as creating TikToks or uploading to Instagram; others may vent their frustrations or engage in discussions via text-based media, like Reddit. Some may share stories of health challenges (Chen, 2016; Lundy, 2024), while others focus on professional or personal self-representation (Van Dijck, 2013). Still others see social media as ?civic laboratories? for political expression (Lane et al., 2019). Not all of us produce visible traces of ourselves online; for example, there are yet others who receive and consume information through these social networks and use it to inform their own experiences, perspectives, and understandings of themselves. What stories do we all have to tell? In this symposium, we invite everyone to contribute to a collective exploration of self-making and communication through different forms of media. Relevant considerations include: - How do people express themselves online and contribute to their own online experiences? To what extent do these forms of self-expression change over time? - What are the processes that underlie identity formation and development in online spaces? To what extent are they iterative, dynamic, or even static? - How does the structure and design of social media platforms mediate self-expression online? How have these platform-mediated venues and self-reflective processes changed over time? - What can we gather from the self-expressive content and interactions on social media platforms (e.g. genuine expressions of self vs. formatted, algorithm-minded content vs. reposts/remakes of other users? content)? - What might the future of self-expression online look like, given the general motivations and direction of social media platforms? How do these motivations aid or hinder users in relation to self-expression? - What are the important considerations for information and library science professionals as these platforms evolve? How can information- and behavioral frameworks inform our understanding? About the Symposium & Pre-Symposium Participatory Experience This symposium is an in-person event co-located at the ASIS&T 2026 annual meeting. We seek to bring together researchers, practitioners, and students interested in exploring the intersection of media and self-expression, aiming to welcome a diverse audience of experiences, perspectives and disciplines. No technical expertise or prior formalized experience with research is required. Additionally, we encourage interested attendees to engage in a participatory experience in the timeframe leading up to the workshop, where they will have an opportunity to create their own social media content as a way to engage with self-expressive and self-reflective processes firsthand. This symposium strives to be a venue to discuss existing as well as new work/creations, and foster a collective dialogue. Call for Participation We will accept three different types of submissions. Attendees may also participate in the workshop without engaging in Options A to C below. - Option A (?Demo?): Submit content of your own reflecting Self-Expression, Self-Actualization, and Media Experimentation (SESAME)! Dear all, We are excited to share a postdoctoral position in our research project Power over Platforms? hosted at The Center for Tracking and Society at the Department of Communication, University of Copenhagen (UCPH). It is a fixed term position to be filled from 15 October 2026 (or as soon as possible hereafter) and runs till the end of August 2028. The position is part of the ?Power over Platforms?? project that aims to understand how power is exercised over platform companies by actors who have neither raw economic nor formal regulatory or legislative means. The focus is on how civil society groups, interest groups, professional associations, and companies from other sectors sometimes actively try to shape how platform companies operate. The candidates are expected to contribute to an empirical mapping of actors seeking to influence platform companies, analyze their strategies, and how the context, object, and goal of their efforts influence outcomes. We are especially interested in applicants with theoretical and methodological qualifications from within the broad field of digital media and communications research, and social scientists interested in digital media and communications. Experience with platform studies with an emphasis on governance and a track record of relevant empirical work, especially work focused on civil society actors, is an advantage. An interest in governance issues around content moderation, privacy and data protection, and generative artificial intelligence is welcome. Full details at the link, but here is the top-level stuff: Data & Society is seeking a post-doctoral research fellow for our AI-Enabled Scams as a Systemic Security Challenge project, housed under our AI & Democracy initiative and led by Director of Research Dr. Alice Marwick. This body of work examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping democratic practice, knowledge production, security, and trust. This position will report to the Director of Research, Alice Marwick, and will not have people manager responsibilities. *This position is fully remote and will begin in September 2026 with an end date of May 31, 2028. * Overall, the AI Scams project looks at how artificial intelligence is supercharging scams, frauds, and hoaxes. We have published a primer and a policy report examining the scope and scale of AI-enabled scams and policy responses. This specific project examines young people?s (Gen A/Z) susceptibility to scams, and how trust, legitimacy, and risk are constructed in online interactions. We are particularly interested in youth financial cultures, such as cryptocurrency, multi-level marketing schemes, sports betting, influencers, prediction markets, retail arbitrage, memestocks, drop-shipping, ?hustle and grind? culture, etc. and how it changes youth understanding of financial opportunity and risk. The post-doctoral fellow will be working on a qualitative research project with two components. First, alongside the PI, they will be conducting interviews and focus groups with a) individuals who have encountered or been harmed by AI-enabled scams and b) youth involved in risky financial subcultures; and second, qualitative discourse and/or content analysis of scam materials, workflows, and use of generative tools. The team also includes a policy analyst, so experience with tech policy is desired, although not necessary. The end goal of this project is to translate our findings into bipartisan policy and governance recommendations, and to bring together consumer protection and cybersecurity perspectives on scams. This study is best supported by a researcher with training in communication, media studies, information studies, economic sociology, critical cybersecurity studies, education, youth studies, science and technology studies, anthropology, or similar. They will also have approximately 30% of their time available for their own research agenda. *The Candidate * Candidates may have a PhD in any number of disciplines, but should have a strong background conducting empirical, qualitative research; be interested in questions related to youth, finance, risk, and emerging technology; have experience recruiting and working with populations for qualitative interview studies; and, ideally, have experience with discourse or content analysis. New Routledge book: The Inequality Regime of AI

I am pleased to share that our new book, *The Inequality Regime of AI: Power, Allocation, and the Struggle for Justice*, co-authored with *Maria Laura Ruiu*, is now out with Routledge. The book asks how artificial intelligence is reorganising inequality. Rather than treating AI only as a technological innovation, a question of bias, or a matter of access, we examine it as an emerging *inequality regime*: a social, political, and infrastructural system through which people are classified, ranked, predicted, included, excluded, and governed. Our central argument is that digital inequality is shifting from questions of access and participation to questions of *prediction and allocation*. The key issue is no longer only who can use digital technologies, but who owns and controls the data, models, infrastructures, and categories through which social life is made legible and actionable. The book asks: Who has the power to classify? Who becomes visible to AI systems, and under what terms? Who is misread, excluded, or rendered risky? Who benefits from automation, and who performs its hidden labour? Who bears the environmental costs of so-called intelligent systems? And who gets to define what intelligence should be for? Across the chapters, we develop concepts such as the *allocative turn*, the *AI stratification spiral*, *algorithmic habitus*, *digital feudalism*, and *redistributive infrastructures* to examine AI across everyday life, institutions, labour, welfare, education, environmental systems, data economies, and global power relations. The book is critical, but not fatalistic. It argues that AI justice requires moving beyond narrow debates on ethics, efficiency, and transparency towards broader questions of redistribution, recognition, representation, and democratic control. *** Last Call for Replication and Negative Results *** 37th IEEE International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2026) October 20-23, 2026, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina Limassol, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/issre2026/ The Replications and Negative Results (RENE) Track has been introduced in the software engineering community for a while and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. This year, we establish this track at ISSRE and invite researchers to (1) replicate results from previous papers and (2) publish studies with important and relevant negative or null results (results that fail to show an effect, yet demonstrate the research paths that did not pay off). We also encourage the publication of the negative results or replicable aspects of previously published work. For example, authors of a published paper reporting a working solution for a given problem can document in a ?negative results paper? other (failed) attempts they made before defining the working solution they published. ? Replication studies. The papers in this category must go beyond simply re- implementing an algorithm and/or re-running the artifacts provided by the original paper. Such submissions should at least apply the approach to new data sets (open-source or proprietary). A replication study should clearly report on results that the authors were able to replicate, as well as on the aspects of the work that were not replicable. ? Negative results papers. We seek papers that report on negative results. We seek negative results for all types of program comprehension research in any empirical area (qualitative, quantitative, case study, experiment, etc.). For example, did your controlled experiment not show an improvement over the baseline? Even if negative, results obtained are still valuable when they are either not obvious or disprove widely accepted wisdom. Evaluation Criteria Both Replication Studies and Negative Results submissions will be evaluated according to the following standards: ? Depth and breadth of the empirical studies ? Clarity of writing ? Appropriateness of conclusions ? Amount of useful, actionable insights ? Availability of artifacts ? Underlying methodological rigor. A negative result due primarily to misaligned expectations or due to lack of statistical power (small samples) is not a good submission. The negative result should be a result of a lack of effect, not a lack of methodological rigor. Most importantly, we expect replication studies to clearly point out the artifacts upon which the study is built, and to provide the links to all the artifacts in the submission (the only exception will be given to those papers that replicate the results on proprietary datasets that can not be publicly released). Submission Instructions Submissions must be original, in the sense that the findings and writing have not been previously published or under consideration elsewhere. However, as either replication studies or negative results, some overlap with previous work is expected. Please make clear in the paper the overlap with and difference from previous work. All submissions must be in PDF format and conform, at time of submission, to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines: (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates) Authors are strongly encouraged to print the PDF and review it for integrity (fonts, symbols, equations, etc.) before submission, as defective printing can undermine a paper?s chance of success. By submitting to the ISSRE RENE Track, authors acknowledge that they are aware of and agree to be bound by the IEEE Plagiarism FAQ. In particular, papers submitted to the RENE track must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under review or submitted for review elsewhere whilst under consideration for ISSRE 2026. Contravention of this concurrent submission policy will be deemed a serious breach of scientific ethics, and appropriate action will be taken in all such cases. To check for double submission and plagiarism issues, the chairs reserve the right to (1) share the list of submissions with the PC Chairs of other conferences with overlapping review periods and (2) use external plagiarism detection software, under contract to the IEEE, to detect violations of these policies. Submission Length: The ISSRE RENE Track accepts submissions of two lengths: (1) New replication studies and new descriptions of negative results should have a length of up to 10 pages, plus 2 pages which may only contain references. (2) Negative results documented during the preparation of previously published work by the authors should be described in up to 5 pages, plus 1 page, which may only contain references (e.g., as previously mentioned, authors of a published paper can document negative results they obtained while working on it, such as methodologically sound solutions that did not work). Important note 1: Both types of papers (replication and negative results) will be included as part of the main conference proceedings. Publication and Presentation Upon notification of acceptance, all authors of accepted papers will receive further instructions for preparing the camera-ready versions of their submissions. In this talk, Dr. Möllers parses the current debate on technofascism(s) to develop a materialist understanding of technofascist formations from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and anti-colonial perspectives. She demonstrates that a focus on materiality highlights both the ordinariness and global/planetary dimensions of contemporary technofascist formations. She argues that a materialist understanding of technofascist formations clarifies that the struggle against them must not be limited to resisting Big Tech but must encompass the abolition of all infrastructures of state violence. *Norma Möllers* is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Queen’s University, where she researches and teaches on technologies of state violence. Her forthcoming book Against Bias <https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262055581/against-bias/>, available open access with MIT Press, is an ethnography of how computer scientists make algorithmic surveillance technology. Her current research focuses on the relationship between algorithmic warfare and digital capitalism.
