--------------------------- Call for Submissions --------------------------- ACM IUI 2016: ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sonoma, CA, USA March 7 - 10, 2016 http://iui.acm.org/ ACM IUI 2016 is the 21st annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are also very interested in contributions from related fields, such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, etc. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in an focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively (we expect over 200 people), but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Processing of multi-modal input (gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) - Natural language and speech processing - Intelligent visualization tools - Generation of multimodal content - Big Data/Text summarization and analytics - Intelligent interfaces for ubiquitous computing - Smart environments and tangible computing - Smart interaction and interfaces for wearable computing - Intelligent assistants for complex tasks - Support for collaboration in multiuser environments - Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI - Affective, social and aesthetic interfaces - Education and learning-related technologies - User-Adaptive interaction - Recommender systems - Modelling and prediction of user behaviour - Interactive Machine Learning - Planning and plan recognition for IUI - Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation - Proactive and agent-based paradigms for user interaction - Example-and demonstration-based interfaces - Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces SUBMISSION ------------------- Full and Short Papers ----------------------------- We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical studies, or design techniques. IUI 2016 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for the design of intelligent interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. Full papers (10 pages with unlimited references) should make substantial, novel and relevant contributions to the field. Short papers (4 pages with unlimited references) can either contain smaller contributions or novel work that is still progress. Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation and short papers either as oral or poster presentation. Authors of accepted IUI 2016 full papers will have an opportunity to submit extended versions to the ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) for consideration for a special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2016". The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along their research that they can no longer make changes. January 7–9, 2016 http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/ The advent of the digital and growing access to the Internet in India, along with the availability of cheap devices such as mobile phones has brought about an explosion of user-mediated creativity across various platforms, allowing for sharing, tweaking, co-creating and repurposing of digital media content in the public sphere. While the digital divide reproduces and intensifies various social hierarchies of gender, caste, class and region, one sees a simultaneous deployment of the digital by sections of society that previously were denied access. The cellular phone has been an important accessory in this widening of access; its use by the urban and rural poor at individual and collective levels opens pathways for incorporation into cultures of consumption and political hegemony as well as for resistance and *jugaad*. The mobile phone is a platform for recording, editing and uploading images, for accessing ‘pirated’ media content, for engaging with social media and for resisting moral codes pertaining to age, caste, class and gender. *Jugaad* as a “pragmatic workaround” (Rai 2012) [2] <http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/#_ftn2> and a “frugal disruptive innovation” (Rajdou, et al, 2012) [3] <http://smcs.tiss.edu/diginaka/#_ftn3> has become a widespread mode of engaging with uncertain and fluid media ecologies and economic imperatives not only for the resource poor of the global South but also for corporations caught in the cusp of highly competitive and shifting global flows. For the poor in the cities and small towns of urban India, and increasingly in rural areas too, engaging with the digital through the mobile has become an important part of the everyday, a means of communication, pleasure, and identity construction. Large informal grey markets, for hardware, software and various services (providing films, charging, repairing and refurbishing phones) respond to this growing engagement with the digital. The scant regard for notions of copyright and intellectual property makes the production and consumption of popular media content a zone of contestation between audiences, the media industries and the state. Along with its potential use for greater local articulation and sharing is also the use of social media and the Internet for trolling, harassing and stalking, particularly of those who resist dominant political and social codes. In recent times, feminists, secularists and activists, among others, have been subjected to and resisted hate speech, making social media an important terrain for the playing out of political struggles. Feminists have engaged with the idea that online spaces can indeed be as dangerous for women as real spaces. Scholars have also turned their gaze to the production and representation of the online self in a variety of ways. Apart from this individual deployment of the digital, there is increasing use of these technologies by a range of movements, campaigns, local filmmakers and grassroots initiatives, with mixed and complicated effects. Ideological battles are waged on the Internet, as various interests use this space to marginalise oppositional viewpoints. Popular films in local dialects and idioms, made on shoe-string budgets, find their own niche audiences and modes of commercially viable distribution. Community radio and video are spaces not just for communication of “development messages” but also for subverting dominant flows of power and for granting access to voices hitherto denied media coverage. Internet journalism, in English and various languages, covers stories often neglected by the mainstream media, which are read, shared and have the potential of going viral, thus countering the censorship of the corporate controlled market. As the boundaries between content producers and users become fuzzy, this growing subaltern and alternative digital and online activity also compels the conventional news media and mainstream cinema to rethink their forms, their modes of content delivery and their revenue models, thus complicating the role of the maker and the user, and the nature of texts. Corporate and state surveillance, data mining, censorship and deployment of digital technologies and algorithms for management of user behaviour and temper these possibilities for democratisation. This three-day international seminar will merge this year with *Frames of Reference*, the annual graduate student seminar of the School. AoIR Awards

Each year, AoIR presents three awards for outstanding scholarship on topics related to internet research. I am pleased to announce this year’s winners. The recipient of the Nancy S. Baym Book Award is Robert W. Gehl for his book Reverse Engineering Social Media: Software, Culture and Political Economy in New Media Capitalism (Temple University Press, 2014). The committee--which included Adi Kuntsman and Kylie Jarrett and was chaired by Andrew Herman--found this book to be theoretically sharp and elegantly written, with a rich sense of historicity. By taking into account software engineering and the power inscribed into its socio-technical affordances, the book articulates a valuable method and model for further analysis of social media. The committee was particularly impressed with Gehl’s presentation of alternative scenarios and alternative possibilities for social media. The AoIR Dissertation Award goes to Nora Draper for her dissertation: "Reputation, Inc.: Assessing the industrialization of self-presentation and privacy in the digital era." The committee felt her topic was a very strong choice. The dissertation expertly attended to commercial exploitation of the tensions between the desire to share/self-present and the desire for privacy, as well as the commercialization of the internet in general. Through her industry study, Draper traces shifts from a right to privacy to concerns about reputation management, providing an original and rigorous contribution to the field. The dissertation committee was comprised of André Brock, Helen Kennedy, Guillaume Latzko-Toth, and was chaired by Kate O'Riordan. They reviewed 30 dissertations and report that the field was incredibly strong, making their choice a difficult one. They have awarded honorary mentions to three additional dissertations: Lisa Silvestri's, "Friended at the Front: Social Media and 21st Century War," Nicole Grove's "Gamers, Hunters, Provocateurs: Digital Mediations of Violence, Gender and Faith in the Arab World," and Tero Jukka Karppi's, "Disconnect.Me - User Engagement and Facebook." The Best Student Paper award goes to Lillian Boxman-Shabtai, for “User-Generated Parody as Negotiation over Meaning: A Typology of Frame Alignment in Musical Renditions”. The committee--which included Jeff Hemsley and Daren Brabham, and was chaired by Sun Sun Lim--found that the paper provides a fresh and innovative perspective to audience studies through an analysis of user-generated music video parodies on YouTube. It was methodologically robust and analytically elegant, offering an illuminating taxonomy of the frames employed by parodists, capturing their meaning-making and acts of subversion. Please join me in congratulating our award winners, who have demonstrated the breadth and strength of internet research. The 2015 Social Informatics Best Paper Award Call for nominations for the 2015 Social Informatics Best Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper published in a peer reviewed journal on a topic informed by social informatics during the 2014 calendar year. The author or authors will present their paper at the 11th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on Saturday, November 5, 2015 and receive a $1,000 cash award at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in St. Louis in November, 2015. Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award Call for nomination for the 2015 Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper written by a doctoral student on a topic informed by social informatics. Nominations may include a published paper in a peer reviewed journal during 2014 or a conference paper presented in 2014. The author or authors will present their paper at the 11th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on Saturday, November 5, 2015 and receive a $500 cash award at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in St. Louis in November, 2015. Thank you! ** PARTNERSHIP FOR PROGRESS ON THE DIGITAL DIVIDE 2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Creating Connections, Building Bridges: Advancing the Digital Divide Research, Policy, and Practice Agenda 21-22 October 2015 Arizona State University SkySong Scottsdale (Phoenix), Arizona USA http://www.ppdd.org/conferences/ppdd2015/ In 1995, based on U.S. Census data collected in 1994, the newly created U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) prepared and released the landmark report "Falling Through the Net: A Survey of the 'Have Nots' in Rural and Urban America". As a result, the inequalities of online access began to be discussed as the "Digital Divide" was recognized as a key challenge in countries around the world. Twenty-one years after that identification of the digital divide through social scientific research, the gaps persist and in many cases grow. According to the latest available data from the International Telecommunication Union, in all but 21 out of 228 countries around the world, and even in the vast majority of developed countries, at least 20% of the population does not benefit from even minimal access to the Internet at home. Even within the top 50 countries in Internet access, 18 countries, ranging from Bahrain to New Zealand to the United States, have 20-30% of their households offline and in 11 countries, including Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Russia, 30-38% of their populations have no Internet access at home. And, that trend continues with even some developed and wealthy countries with Very High Human Development according to the United Nations having around half their households without Internet access (e.g., Greece with 44%, Saudi Arabia with 46%, and Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, with 51% offline). While the digital divide has always impacted groups across a wide range of ages, now, given the number of years the digital divide has already persisted and its likely continuation into the future, these experiences of inequality will affect individuals across their entire life course. More than two decades of research, policy, and practice have taught us that the digital divide is about gaps in access and connectivity; the skills and digital literacy needed to interpret, understand, and navigate information presented online; effective use by individuals and communities; the impact of socio-economic factors on user behavior; the role of motivation, attitudes, and interests; differences in patterns of usage; the ways in which people use the Internet to create content; and the resulting socio-economic and cultural effects. But, more than that, when fully assessed and understood, it is evident that the digital divide has now taken its place alongside other long-standing, persistent issues of social equity and social justice. The interdisciplinary Partnership for Progress on the Digital Divide (PPDD) 2015 International Conference brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to strategize actions and catalyze solutions to this pressing societal concern. PPDD 2015 provides an extended, in-depth opportunity to consider the current state and future possibilities for research, policy, and practice that informs issues related to the digital divide around the world. Further, the Conference works to identify new areas of necessary, productive research focus to foster greater understanding and enlighten policy and practice going forward so that all global citizens can participate fully in the digital, networked age. As a major outcome of PPDD 2015, we plan to produce an edited volume of the top papers as well as special issues of journals on specific themes within the digital divide area. Hosted by the Arizona State University (ASU) School of Public Affairs, PPDD 2015 will be held at ASU's high-tech SkySong in the Scottsdale area of Phoenix, Arizona, USA with complimentary transport to/from discounted hotel room blocks in pleasurable Old Town Scottsdale, a 5-10 minute drive from SkySong. Involving scholars, policymakers and practitioners at all stages of their careers, sessions at PPDD 2015 will include reports of research from any discipline and any theoretical and methodological approach that contributes to exploring the issues surrounding the digital divide as well as discussions of policy and practice work, experiences, ideas, challenges, and opportunities. In addition, there will be plenaries, including an opening plenary luncheon on 21 October, and a keynote luncheon on 22 October. The final session of PPDD 2015 is a highly interactive, lively brainstorming and collaborative thinking dialogue among all presenters and other attendees to create partnerships and inspire new ideas for digital divide research, policy, and practice.
