Department of Media and Communications, LSE: Postdoctoral Research Officer, Global Kids Online Full-time for eleven months, to begin as soon as possible: £33,450 to £36,520 per annum The Department of Media and Communication at the London School of Economics and Political Science is seeking to appoint a full time postdoctoral research officer to work on a timely and original research project on children's rights in a global digital age. Applications are invited from outstanding and dynamic candidates with a PhD in the fields of media and communications, social research methods, education, childhood studies or allied social sciences. The appointee will play a key role in developing a research framework and methodological toolkit to guide the conduct of cross-national pilot studies into the opportunities and barriers faced by children as they go online with increasing frequency around the world. The project is directed by Professor Sonia Livingstone and funded by UNICEF as part of a global effort to generate high quality evidence to underpin policy and practice to promote children's rights to protection, provision and participation in the digital age. Candidates should have advanced expertise in research methods, preferably quantitative or multi-method and a developing record of excellent quality publications in refereed journals. Is this a Facebook page or profile? I know you said profile, but just want to clarify. It may be that the account has been flagged. I'm not sure if you contacted Facebook directly, but that's what I would do. It may have looked like SPAM, or someone reported it as SPAM, and/or the account is still locked. In the future try using a page for the actual study, and connect it to the organization in which the study is being conducted. But contact Facebook directly, and once you are able to get into your account, make a copy of your participants contact information. I hope this helps. Question about social media tracking

What's the easiest tool to use to gain information about the traffic on Twitter from an organization (a newspaper) to a person (a political figure) about a particular topic in a particular date range? I've looked at a number of tools that claim to be able to achieve this level of tracking but they all have limitations, or have simply 'fallen over' in the process of my searching. IR 16 conference workshop: Digital Methods in Internet Research

Hi all, We'd like to give you some more details about the full-day preconference workshop "Digital Methods in Internet Research" at IR16. The workshop is organised by Axel Bruns, Jean Burgess, Tim Highfield, Ben Light, Patrik Wikstrom (all at QUT Digital Media Research Centre) and Tama Leaver (Curtin University). It offers the participants hands-on experience of a number of cutting-edge data-driven research methods and their applications in media, cultural and internet studies. The workshop is structured into the following four sessions: 1 Data visualisation: Especially when working with large social media datasets, data visualisation is now an indispensable part of the scholarly research and publication process. This data visualisation session will focus on a number of emerging standard tools for large-scale analysis, including Tableau for processing and visualising large datasets. 2 Agent Based Modelling: Many phenomena in our field are inherently complex and dynamic: They change over time; everything is connected to everything else; they have "tipping points" or "virtuous" (or "vicious") circles; and so on. Our traditional methods are often lacking in the analysis of such systems. This session introduces agent-based modelling (ABM), which is a method that has proven to be a useful approach for unpacking dynamic complexity. 3 Software and app studies: In order to study the social media platforms and software applications that populate the digital media environment, we need to take into account not only content and user practices, but also socio-technical features, interface design elements, and business models - but doing this empirically is a challenge. In this session, you will be introduced to a novel approach to critical and qualitative digital methods: the App Walkthrough, which borrows from vernacular digital media culture, User Experience research and STS to undertake an 'ethnography of affordances', as part of a broader software and app studies approach to mobile dating and hook-up applications. 4 Instagrammatics - analysing visual social media: This session's exploration of visual social media uses Instagram as a focus but with applications beyond this specific platform. The session provides a hands-on means for approaching visual social media, giving participants the opportunity to interrogate what they might do with such data and what visual media and methods might contribute to research. Media Innovations is a prioritized research area at the Department of Media and Communication (please see http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/index.ht…) Media Innovations includes research on how changing technologies and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about media innovation and transformation of the media sector with perspectives ranging from institutional and structural conditions, to genres and expressions. One central field within the research area is Media Innovation by Media Design. This involves research on how design within Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and media industries interact with media innovations both narrowly considered (e.g., within journalism, education, etc.) and more broadly considered, i.e., recognizing that media innovations are interwoven with larger social and political contexts. The PhD fellowship is within this field of Media Innovation by Media Design. Projects are particularly encouraged that develop, realize and test in practice, new approaches to design that expand beyond current models.
