The Technology of Protest Past and Present” Department of History Carleton University, Ottawa Canada April 23, 24, 2015 >From the G8 demonstrations to the Occupy Movements, Idle No More, and revolutions in the Middle East, the last few years have witnessed a phenomenal upswing in the use of social media in popular protest. Social technology has played an important role in mobilizing grassroots opposition and, according to some scholars and pundits, it has served to politicize a broader base, bringing about greater participation in and new forms of civic action. Activists use platforms like Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to raise consciousness around lightning-rod issues. New technologies aid in the organization of demonstrations. They help mobilize emotions, map out logistics, and after all is said and done, they catalogue and document opposition success and further challenges. Social media’s democratizing potential is not without its detractors, however, and alongside concerns for the protection of privacy and surveillance, skeptics question whether networked publics really can serve as meaningful spaces of protest and opposition. In lending shape to everyday opposition, cataloguing images of excess and exuberance, and circulating them in networked publics, there can be no doubt Web 2.0 is writing a history of the present. Yet aside from the thorny issue of impact, it is worth asking how new is new media in the way it shapes protest and opposition? This two-day symposium aims to bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to interrogate what is in fact new, different, and unique about how “old” and “new” media have structured, popularized, given voice to, and helped mobilize protest and opposition across time and space. We will discuss pre-circulated papers of 15 pages in length. Each paper should demonstrate a conceptual engagement with the interplay of time and place-specific media and their relation to public sentiment and opposition. Dr. Merlyna Lim, Carleton University’s Canada Research Chair in in Digital Media and Global Network Society will provide a keynote. This year, ATTW is sponsoring two Research Methods Workshops: - Bill Hart-Davidson, Michigan State University, and Ryan Omizo, University of Rhode Island, on* Analyzing Large-Scale Datasets in Writing Studies*, and - Huatong Sun, University of Washington Tacoma, on *Analyzing Digital Writing in a Cross Cultural Framework.* These two half-day workshops will be held in Tampa on Tuesday afternoon, March 17, 12:30-4:30. This is the day preceding the ATTW conference (March 18) and the CCCC conference (March 18-21). Each workshop focuses on a methodology for data analysis and is designed to help researchers devise and try out an analytic approach. *Analyzing Large-Scale Datasets in Writing Studies* with Bill Hart-Davidson and Ryan Omizo focuses on methods for using machine-learning algorithms to assist in the rapid analysis of a large text corpus. *Analyzing Digital Writing in a Cross Cultural Framework* with Huatong Sun focuses on how to use a dialogic view of local culture to examine cross-cultural data and articulate local technology-mediated practices as uptakes in the age of globalization. CALL FOR PAPERS: «Online Communication, Discourse and Context» http://www.ds.uzh.ch/Tagungen/MOOD-Z 3rd international Symposium: Micro-Analysis of Online Data (MOOD-Z) University of Zurich, Switzerland | July 16th – 17th 2015 The Micro-Analysis of Online Data (MOOD) network is an interdisciplinary group of scholars who explore theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of computer mediated communication (CMC). Although our broad focus is on the application and/or adaptation of conversation and discourse analytic techniques to online data, we are also sensitive to the fact that much online data consist of visual or hypertextual material. Therefore we are also interested in developing novel methods that are tailored towards multimodal environments with limited verbal and paralinguistic data from platforms such as Pinterest to Soundcloud to SecondLife. The 2015 symposium will include two keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Miriam Locher, University of Basel Dr. Sean Rintel, University of Queensland and Microsoft Research Cambridge We invite proposals for paper presentations that address theoretical, methodological, and method-based issues related to the analysis of CMC. We particularly encourage submissions related to the following topics:  The application of conversation analysis and various forms of discourse analysis to the study of online interaction.  Methodological challenges related to carrying out micro-analyses of online discourse/ CMC environments, particularly with methodologies typically applied to face-to-face interactions.  Theoretical considerations around the communicative conditions for online (written) communication, e.g. addressing issues such as physical vs. virtual presence, and how processes of reading and writing differ in their communicative conditions and consequences from face-to-face interaction.  The issue of ‘place’ and ‘space’ in (relation to) online discourse.  Technologies that support the analysis of online interaction.  Ethical dilemmas inherent to the study of online interaction. This is a full time dedicated role within the collaborative Irish Records Linkage 1864-1913 project, which started in January 2014. The successful candidate shall work with two Principal Investigators on this project, Dr Sandra Collins (Director of the DRI), and Dr. Ciara Breathnach (University of Limerick). This exciting interdisciplinary project entitled Irish Record Linkage, 1864-1913, is funded by the Irish Research Council and is at the nexus of linked data technologies, digital archiving and medical humanities. The project aims to provide a comprehensive map of infant and maternal mortality for Dublin from 1864-1913. We will create a Knowledge Platform entitled Irish Record Linkage (IRL) to enhance the research potential of individual level metadata, using best practice in Digital Archiving and the application of Linked Data principles on top of RDF triple stores, ontologies and competency questions created for this project. The application of Linked Data technologies with state of the art digital archiving and discovery technologies will allow us to interrogate this historical ‘Big Data’. Prof. Stefan Decker, Director of Insight at NUIG is a funded investigator on this project, bringing his world-leading expertise in Linked Data and the semantic web. The project aims to apply Linked Data technologies and ontology engineering with state of the art digital archiving and discovery technologies to historical Irish vital registration data (births, deaths and marriage records) within the strictest levels of data protection, and present a highly accurate spatial reconstruction of maternal and infant mortality for Dublin. A further aim is to examine the extent to which communicable diseases, such as Tuberculosis complicated these data. This contract is funded from an Irish Research Council, Interdisciplinary Research Project Grants Scheme 2013 and will be filled on a 10-month fixed term contract (full time, five day week). The successful applicant must be in a position to start no later than the 5th January 2015. The Linked Data Postdoctoral Researcher is an important role in this mature project team of currently 8 members; building the linked data platform and ontologies and providing answers to the key competency questions of the project, as well as the presentation to end users thereof. The successful candidate will be based in the DRI offices in the RIA on Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Reporting to the DRI Director, the DRI-Irish Records Linkage Linked Data Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for: • Working closely with the DRI Director, and the project teams in DRI, UL and NUIG in the day-to-day operation of the collaborative Irish Records Linkage 1864-1913 project • Managing professional relationships with the project partner organisations and team members and data custodians • Specifying, implementing and testing the IRL (Irish Records Linkage, 1864-1913) Linked Data based platform, prototype and demonstrator • Researching, developing and implementing ontologies based on competency questions formulated by the domain experts and answering those competency questions • Publishing the research findings of the Irish Records Linkage 1864-1913 project, and travelling to international conferences to present the research • Assisting in writing grant and funding proposals • Assisting in the organisation of outreach and events for the Irish Records Linkage 1864-1913 project • Assisting in the project management and reporting required for the Irish Records Linkage 1864-1913 project • Any other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will be a self-motivated graduate with an excellent command of English. Candidates must have: • A PhD in a relevant area, or a higher degree in computer science combined with equivalent work experience • Skills and expertise in Linked Data, Semantic Web, information science, ontologies, and developing competency questions • Hands-on practical experience of developing RDF triple stores and the creation of ontologies • Practical knowledge of rule languages such as SWRL, SPIN, etc. • Strong oral and written communications skills, with the ability and confidence to engage with project partners and stakeholders clearly and professionally • Evidence of strong organisational and self-motivational skills • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment and to deadlines • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to operate flexibly as a member of this cross-disciplinary team. Salary: The salary scale applicable is the Post Doctoral Researcher Level 2. €33,975 to €46,255 p.a. Mobile phone and smartphone design guidelines for older adults

Dear all, We are working on a project researching the existing guidelines and checklists for designing mobile phones and smartphones for older adults (55 and older). With the literature search we have come across 9 papers that enclose/elaborate design guidelines and checklists (Pattison and Stedmon 2006; Lee 2007; Massimi et al. 2007; Van Biljon et al. 2010; Al-Razgan et al. 2012; Van Dyk et al. 2013; Díaz-Bassini and Moreno 2014; Mi et al. 2014; Loureiro and Rodrigues 2014). Because we would like to have a comprehensive insight into the topic, we are trying to discover if there are any other (published or unpublished) design guidelines for mobile phones and smartphones appropriate for older adults. The objective of the SPION project is to mitigate the responsibilization of individuals who use or are affected by social networking services by making the underlying social networking infrastructures and the organizations that run them more accountable and providing the means and knowledge to users to better arm themselves. These issues are addressed from different angles including legal, social, behavioral, educational and technical. During the lunch the audience will have the opportunity to try and see the different tools and educational materials that were developed. However, to make that happen at least one author of the accepted paper has to register. At the time of submission of the final camera-ready copy, authors will have to indicate the already registered person for that publication. Any paper published by the ACM, IEEE, etc. which can be properly cited constitutes research which must be considered in judging the novelty of a WWW submission, whether the published paper was in a conference, journal, or workshop. Therefore, any paper previously published as part of a WWW workshop must be referenced and suitably extended with new content to qualify as a new submission to the Research Track at the WWW conference. Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must * be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; * occupy no more than six pages, including the abstract, references, and appendices.
