JOB OPENING: RESEARCHER, ENABLING CONNECTED LEARNING The Data & Society Research Institute is looking to hire a researcher who can help design and execute a research agenda to enable connected learning. D&S brings together researchers, entrepreneurs, activists, policy creators, journalists, geeks, and public intellectuals to gather, debate, and engage one another on the key issues introduced by the increasing availability of data in society. The Enabling Connected Learning Initiative Enabling Connected Learning is a new Data & Society initiative, spearheaded by our founder, danah boyd, and supported through a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The goal of the project is to better understand the relationship between U.S. governmental policy, technology development, and innovative learning and education initiatives. This project recognizes the importance and goals of connected learning an educational approach designed to leverage technology and learner-driven interests to enable learning. This project is also seeking to enable the cities of learning movement in order to create bridges between different learning environments, all with the learner at the center. Federal and state policies focused on children, education, and technology shape what learning initiatives are possible. Privacy, safety, and security all shape the trustworthiness of different digital platforms and learning ecosystems, even as data can be used to enable new forms of learning and new opportunities for advancing education. While these issues are publicly debated and politically fraught, research to ground these conversations is limited. The goal of this project is to better understand exactly how existing and proposed policies affect connected learning initiatives. Job Description We are seeking either a full-time or part-time researcher to help drive the research components of this project. Start date is negotiable and the appointment is for two years (with renewal possibilities). Applicants should have a PhD in a social science or related field or significant experience doing similar types of research. Applicants may be postdocs or more advanced researchers. This is a fully funded position with benefits and vacation; salary is dependent on experience. The appointment requires residency in New York. Travel may be necessary, both for conducting the research and for disseminating findings. This project will involve qualitative interviewing and may also involve content analysis, policy analysis, and survey work depending on the questions that emerge from the initial research. The researcher would work as a part of a research team, collaborating with danah and with other research assistants and researchers. Core findings from the work will be published through white papers and in public-facing venues but researchers are also encouraged to publish scholarly contributions in peer-reviewed venues. This position is ideal for a qualitative researcher who is seeking to do impact-oriented research at the intersection of education and learning, policy, and technology; to be a part of a research team; and to be situated in a community of researchers all looking to understand the intersection of technology and society. While researchers are also encouraged to pursue their own research agenda during this appointment, executing this project must take priority. Statistical software and Internet data gathering

Using an Application Programming Interface (API) call to twitter by registering a twitter application I was able to gather data from twitter. I prefer statistical software like SAS or R and both of these can make http requests built into some code and then import the JSON web data file. I would recommend learning this programming yourself as it does not take a deep knowledge of programming and gives one fairly fine grained control on data gathering and is much cheaper than using a canned application. R software is free here www.r-project.org Many publishing mathematical statisticians are using R and are publishing new R routines these days. The other approach is to teach computer scientists social science I guess. I think they would be using python computer language these days. (with apologies for x-posting) Announcing two new books of potential interest to people on this list: *Digital Rebellion: The Birth of the Cyber Left* (History of Communication Series, University of Illinois Press), by Todd Wolfson *Digital Rebellion *examines the impact of new media and communication technologies on the spatial, strategic, and organizational fabric of social movements. Todd Wolfson begins with the rise of the Zapatistas in the mid-1990s, and how aspects of the movement--network organizational structure, participatory democratic governance, and the use of communication tools as a binding agent--became essential parts of Indymedia and all Cyber Left organizations. From there he uses oral interviews and other rich ethnographic data to chart the media-based think tanks and experiments that continued the Cyber Left's evolution through the Independent Media Center's birth around the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle. As Wolfson shows, understanding the intersection of Indymedia and the Global Social Justice Movement illuminates their foundational role in the Occupy struggle, Arab Spring uprising, and the other emergent movements that have in recent years re-energized radical politics. Over the next decade, several hundred of these newly created low-wattage stations took to the airwaves. In *Low Power to the People*, Christina Dunbar-Hester describes the practices of an activist organization focused on LPFM during this era. Despite its origins as a pirate broadcasting collective, the group eventually shifted toward building and expanding regulatory access to new, licensed stations. These radio activists consciously cast radio as an alternative to digital utopianism, promoting an understanding of electronic media that emphasizes the local community rather than a global audience of Internet users. Dunbar-Hester focuses on how these radio activists imputed emancipatory politics to the “old” medium of radio technology by promoting the idea that “microradio” broadcasting holds the potential to empower ordinary people at the local community level. The group’s methods combine political advocacy with a rare commitment to hands-on technical work with radio hardware. The book follows the ways in which activists’ hands-on, inclusive ethos was hampered by persistent issues of race, class, and gender. Projecting utopian politics onto technology resulted in unanticipated challenges. Dunbar-Hester’s study of activism around an “old” medium offers broader lessons about how political beliefs are expressed through engagement with specific technologies. SBP Grand Data Challenge 2015

The Grand Data Challenge of the 2015 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling & Prediction Overview This year's SBP Grand Challenge problem asks participants to consider the following question, "how can we use publicly available data on the web and elsewhere to find social inequality and to aid the disadvantaged?" From the Arab Spring to the recent Gamergate scandal, the use of social media in understanding and mitigating social inequalities and prejudice has increased at a rapid pace. At the same time, data used for decades to study the ways in which social inequalities permeate every facet of social structure have become increasingly accessible. While many have taken advantage of these resources to produce new and interesting approaches to understanding social inequalities and ways to prevent them, there is much interesting and useful work still to be done. For example, the following questions may be of interest: How are stereotypes of disadvantaged individuals perpetuated in social media? How do differing levels of Internet access affect the presence and attitude of individuals online? How has the distribution of poverty changed over time as American cities have grown, and how has this affected the impoverished population in a negative or positive way? These are by no means the only questions of interest, and are only intended to give a rough idea of what might be an interesting topic to explore for this challenge problem. Submission All submissions must be in the form of a 4-6 page single column paper with a minimum font size of 10. Note that only the abstract will be included in the proceedings, and thus should not conflict with any concurrent or future submissions of this work to other venues. Submissions will be judged by a based on their novelty, adherence to relevant social science literature, and technical rigor. Pervasive and smart technologies have pushed work-place configuration beyond linear logic and physical boundaries. As a result, workers’ experience of and access to technology is increasingly pervasive, and their agency constantly reconfigured. While this in certain areas of work is not new (e.g., technology mediation and decision support in air traffic control), more recent developments in other domains such as healthcare (e.g., Augmented Reality in Computer Aided Surgery) have raised challenging issues for HCI researchers and practitioners. The question now is: how to improve the quality of workers’ experience and outputs? This working conference focuses on answering this question to support professionals, academia, national labs, and industry engaged in human work analysis and interaction design for the workplace. Conversely, tools, procedures, and professional competences for designing human-centered technologies for pervasive and smart workplaces will be discussed. We are looking for submissions that provide the HCI field with sound tools, procedures, and professional competencies for designing human-centered technologies for pervasive and smart workplaces. Drawing Together: Solidarities, Pictures, and Politics 10th Visual and Cultural Studies Graduate Conference University of Rochester April 10-11, 2015 http://humanities.lib.rochester.edu/vcsconference “Solidarity” recalls notions of inclusivity, activism, and movement. Adopted from the French solidarité in the early 19th century, the word continues to indicate the communal union of interests or aspirations, as well as collective responsibility. From its use by labor unions to its association with socialism and communism, solidarity has historically been made to bear a sense of the political. We recognize in the powerful images of recent events a renewed need to assess strategies of togetherness, both historical and contemporary. We propose this topic with the aim of critically engaging pictures and their power to mobilize both differences and commonalities. Can we envision solidarity outside the pursuit of common political aims? Can we find common ground amidst different struggles? We invite scholars, artists, and activists to draw upon our understanding of solidarity and the visual dimensions in which solidarity is organized in social movements, represented in art and activism, and studied in and out of the academy. Possible topics might include, but are by no means limited to: * Artistic practice in political movements (labor, civil rights, climate change) * Tactics and strategies of historical and contemporary grassroots movements * Media images, hashtag #solidarity, spectacle * Protest songs, union anthems, “The Internationale,” “Solidarity Forever” * Armchair activism, “slacktivism,” and the ethics of involvement * Documentation of collectivity, alternative journalism * The politics of love and kinship We invite individual submissions as well as pre-constituted panels (of 3-4 presenters) in the form of 300 word abstracts (for 20-minute paper presentations) and 100 word bios for each presenter, to be sent to vcsconference(a)gmail.com by February 15, 2015.
