Mobile Devices in Education: An E-Waste Survey
by Shawn Apostel 09 Dec '13

09 Dec '13

Tablets and other mobile devices are increasingly being used to facilitate student learning; however, each day these devices get one step closer to becoming outdated and contributing to the ever expanding e-waste stream. Kristi Apostel and I are collecting information to see what plans schools and universities have in place for outdated mobile devices. We will be presenting our findings in the session "Futures for Composition and Communication: Opening Research and Teaching to Issues of E-Waste and E-Justice" at the Conference of College Composition and Communication, Indianapolis, in March. Please fill out this quick survey if you have past, current, or future experiences with mobile devices in education: http://tinyurl.com/mobile-ewaste-survey Thank you, Shawn -- Shawn Apostel, Ph.D -- Instructional Technology Specialist Bellarmine University -- @apostels shawn.apostel(a)gmail.com

Elsevier and academia.edu
by Jonathan Sterne, Dr. 09 Dec '13

Hi All, I've been following these developments with interest. A few comments. 1. It is not true that there are no open access journals that are good to publish in, even for conservative hiring and tenure committees. Though I guess it depends on your discipline and subfield which they might be. I am on the editorial board of International Journal of Communication and joined precisely because I believe in the project. 2. Publishing requires time, skill and money. But it doesn't have to be done for profit. There is a big difference between university presses, who are mostly money-losing operations, small independent publishers who are guided by an intellectual or political vision, and big conglomerates like elsevier who are in the business of maximizing profits. Why we should be supporting the conglomerates is beyond me, but we should definitely be supporting university presses or a robust library-driven alternative unless you like the idea of laying out your own page proofs in the future and handling all your own copyediting, promotion, reviewing and distribution, on top of all the other duties being offloaded to faculty these days. (this is especially important for book authors) 3. Everything people have been saying about publishers like Elsevier being parasitic on academics' free labour is also applicable to academia.edu<http://academia.edu>. As far as I can tell, academia.edu<http://academia.edu> is itself a for-profit operation, working on the same suspect business model as other social media sites. They provide a "free" site that is actually very expensive to host and maintain. The site is "free" to users because user fees are actually less valuable than the data generated by users of "free" accounts, over which users have no control. I only know of one group of potential customers for such data sets--marketers. So once again we have advertising creeping into new media business models, except it's scholarship, a space where advertising hasn't really taken over. Unless there's something I'm missing, the fact that they were granted a .edu address is an impressive con job, since they appear to be a .com like all the others. If academia.edu<http://academia.edu> has another business model that doesn't involve selling its users' data to third parties over whom we have no control, or marketers as their real clients, I would like to hear about it. 4. I have joined academia.edu<http://academia.edu> to get prepublication copies of essays. I keep my own work on a hosted site that's easy to find in google. That site incurs costs of all sorts, but I know what they are and what the profit-model is for the people providing me the services. For now, I am more comfortable with those options (I could, also, host a site on my own university's servers, but there are reasons not to do that). Fwd: {New Book: The Proteus Paradox}
by Cherie Todd 09 Dec '13

09 Dec '13

For those of you examining games and life online, you may be interested in this recent publication by Nick Yee. ***************************************** Dear friends and fellow gamers, I am so excited to let you know that my new book on the psychology of online games, “The Proteus Paradox”, is now in print and available on Amazon and other book retailers: http://www.amazon.com/The-Proteus-Paradox-Online-Virtual/dp/0300190999 The book challenges the myths around who plays online games and what really happens in these virtual worlds. We often think of online games as being about fantasy, freedom, and fun, but many gamers describe their gaming as a second job, superstitions flourish, and a player’s suspected offline ethnicity can be a matter of virtual life and death. Drawing from player narratives, psychology lab experiments, and analysis of game server data, this is a book about gnomes falling in love, how the community changes when the NPC city guards give out directions freely, and ultimately, what it means to be human in a digital world. Elsevier is taking down papers from Academia.edu
by Richard Forno 08 Dec '13

08 Dec '13

FYI.....via Slashdot.... Elsevier is taking down papers from Academia.edu December 6, 2013 Lots of researchers post PDFs of their own papers on their own web-sites. It’s always been so, because even though technically it’s in breach of the copyright transfer agreements that we blithely sign, everyone knows it’s right and proper. Preventing people from making their own work available would be insane, and the publisher that did it would be committing a PR gaffe of huge proportions. Enter Elsevier, stage left. Bioinformatician Guy Leonard is just one of several people to have mentioned on Twitter this morning that Academia.edu took down their papers in response to a notice from Elsevier. Here’s a screengrab of the notification: < - > http://svpow.com/2013/12/06/elsevier-is-taking-down-papers-from-academia-ed… --- Just because i'm near the punchbowl doesn't mean I'm also drinking from it.

CFP: InVisible Culture Issue 21: "Pursuit" (DEADLINE JAN. 1, 2014)
by Joel Neville Anderson 08 Dec '13

08 Dec '13

Dear Air-L subscribers, Please circulate the latest call for papers and creative works for Issue 21 of my graduate program's journal, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture, on the theme of “Pursuit” (pasted below). The deadline is fast approaching on January 1, 2014. Thank you. Best regards, Joel Neville Anderson PhD Student, Visual and Cultural Studies University of Rochester - http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-21-pursuit InVisible Culture Issue 21 - "Pursuit" For its twenty-first issue, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that address the topic of pursuit. We encourage authors and artists to reflect on the meaning and mechanics of pursuit across broad ranging phenomena. This term is meant to address two larger and related concerns. First, it prompts a discussion about matters of narrative, aesthetics, and medium, including topics as specific as the ‘chase film’ and crime narratives, to those as seemingly abstract as failure, paranoia, and process. Second, the word pursuit is meant to direct thinking toward a number of more clearly socio-political concerns, including, but not limited to, the topics of work and profession. In his new book, 24/7: Late Capitalism and the End of Sleep, Jonathan Crary worriedly observes that in the current global paradigm “the highest premium is placed on activity for its own sake,” and that it is the pursuit of sleep that stands as the most meaningful form of resistance in this context. We offer the term pursuit as a thematic framework for considering the manifold forms our embeddedness in a fully-networked, around-the-clock habitus can take, and how these forms bear not only on our positions as workers, professionals, and laborers, but also as active subjects. We welcome papers and artworks that address, complicate, and expand these models of pursuit. Some possible topics of exploration are (but not limited to): Purpose and purposelessness, means without ends The “pursuit” of media: transmediality; new media; medium specificity; the myth of total cinema; pursuit of perfect software (FOSS, cloud storage, smartphone apps, etc.) Paranoia, surveillance, cyberstalking Detective fiction Gaming culture Futurity and speculation Surpassing subject/object conditions Praxis Realism, mimesis Labor, work, vocation, craft, profession Modernism/contemporaneity Failure Nostalgia Utopias and heterotopias Pursuit and politics: feminism, Occupy, Arab Spring; political investments in academia or other professional contexts Agonism Please send completed papers (with references following the guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style) of between 4,000 and 10,000 words to ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com by January 1st, 2014 at 11:59pm EST. Inquiries should be sent to the same address. Creative/Artistic Works In addition to written materials, Invisible Culture is accepting work in other media (video, photography, drawing, code) that reflect upon the theme as it is outlined above. For questions or more details concerning acceptable formats, go to http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Reviews InVisible Culture is also currently seeking submissions for book, exhibition, and film reviews (600-1,000 words). To submit a review proposal, go to http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Blog The journal also invites submissions to its blog feature, which will accommodate more immediate responses to the topic of the current issue. For further details, please contact us at ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com with the subject heading “blog submission”. * InVisible Culture (An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture) is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to explorations of the material and political dimensions of cultural practices: the means by which cultural objects and communities are produced, the historical contexts in which they emerge, and the regimes of knowledge or modes of social interaction to which they contribute. http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu
