Colleagues, Case Studies in Strategic Communication is pleased to announce on this Halloween day the publication of a new case: "Zombies Gone Viral: How a Fictional Zombie Invasion Helped CDC Promote Emergency Preparedness," by Marjorie Kruvand and Maggie Silver. It is available here: http://cssc.uscannenberg.org/cases/v2/v2art3/ Many of you do research that involves interesting case studies in strategic communication that involve the Internet, social media, and mobile technologies. The majority of the cases we publish feature new media technologies prominently, with cases published in the journal's first two volumes that deal with the strategic use of YouTube, social media brand ambassadors in sports stadiums, and the use of social media in higher education. CSSC is an online, peer-reviewed, open access (like, for real open access, where no one pays anything to get published) journal based at USC-Annenberg. Consider assigning these articles in your classrooms or submitting your own case studies for publication consideration. CSSC does not publish traditional scholarly research, but rather focuses on publishing high-quality case studies suitable primarily for teaching and learning. www.csscjournal.org Happy Halloween! db --- Daren C. Further call for papers on broadband development
by Matthew Allen 31 Oct '13

31 Oct '13

http://www.uq.edu.au/mia/calls-for-papers *Broadband Futures: Content, Connectivity and Control* *A special issue of Media International Australia* *Theme Editors: Matthew Allen, Catherine Middleton, Sora Park and Peter Thompson* *(deadline for short abstract 21 November)* Australia and New Zealand are deploying very fast national broadband infrastructure, utilising a more centralised, government-driven approach than previously. Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) and New Zealand’s Ultra-Fast Broadband Initiative (UFB), combined with the Rural Broadband Initiative, are major infrastructure projects that promise to revolutionise underlying telecommunications infrastructure while reshaping the policy environment. Such developments are a response to the patchwork quilt of multiple technologies, business models and regulatory settings that, until recently, had only partially served internet development. They will create a national future that is more competitive, more connected, and more coherent in its application of high-speed computer-mediated communications. Both network initiatives have been promoted heavily by their respective governments but also criticised by opposition political parties. Given the timeframe of these network developments, ongoing activity will necessarily be affected by changes to governments. However the fundamental rationale and design of these ‘next generation’ networks is remaking the way the internet is used, understood and interacts with other telecommunications and entertainment media. At the same time, these new networks will need to developed and adapted, or be relevant now but not in the future. This issue of MIA will present research, analysis and critique of the current state of very large network infrastructure development relevant to Australia and New Zealand, including comparative examples from other nations. We invite submissions from researchers, industry analysts and participants, and government regulators and policy-makers, to create a conversation about the future of broadband. We particularly seek articles that explore the relationships between content (what is done via such networks), the control that is exerted over content, and the processes of connectivity that are the potential outcome of such developments. Our goal is to present various perspectives on the intersection of these three domains (what users want and do; how access is provided and sold; and the work of corporations and governments managing the intersection of these two), and thus better understand how broadband development might achieve the national economic and social advantages claimed for it. Submissions will be assessed for their scholarly merit and the extent to which they contribute to our greater understanding of the consequences and purposes of broadband development, especially in Australia and New Zealand. Contributors should limit their articles to between 3500 and 4000 words (including references). *Abstracts (250 words) are due by 21 NOVEMBER 2013.* *Full articles (**5000 words maximum) **will need to be submitted by 7 FEBRUARY 2014.* -- Professor Matthew Allen, internet critic, researcher and educator http://netcrit.net; @netcrit; life member AoIR <http://aoir.org>

(Deadline reminder) CFP: The Digital Future of Education (International Review of Information Ethics)
by Michael Zimmer 30 Oct '13

30 Oct '13

A reminder that the Nov 1 deadline for this special issue on the “Digital Future of Education” is approaching…. -- Michael Zimmer, PhD Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies Director, Center for Information Policy Research University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee e: zimmerm(a)uwm.edu w: www.michaelzimmer.org Call for Papers: International Review of Information Ethics The Digital Future of Education, Vol. 21 (06/2014) Edited by Johannes Britz and Michael Zimmer • Deadline for extended abstracts: November 1, 2013 • Notification of acceptance to authors: January 1, 2014 • Deadline for full articles: April 1, 2014 • Deadline for revised articles: May 15, 2014 • Publication: June 2014 Our contemporary information society is reinventing how knowledge is created, organized, accessed, and shared, with far reaching implications for institutions of learning – schools, libraries, museums, and more. Digital technologies facilitate new ways of thinking about learning that acknowledge and nurture individual talents, skills, and interests, as well as fostering connectedness and collaboration. The rapid development and ubiquity of digital technologies and platforms have pushed the future of education in innovative and unexpected directions. Computers, tablets and smart boards are integrated into classrooms from kindergarten through university; Web-based resources are increasingly relied on for instruction, collaboration, and research; entire courses, classrooms, and universities have moved online; social media platforms are being leveraged to improve student services and communication; big data analytics are used to enhance enrollment and advising services; MOOCs and related online environments provide alluring new learning opportunities. This special issue will explore the ethical dimensions, implications, and challenges of the evolving digital future of education. We welcome submissions discussing, but not limited to, these areas of inquiry: • Commodification/democratization of higher education • Student privacy, intellectual freedom online • Quality of teaching and learning • Labor implications for instructors and information professionals • Academic misconduct and plagiarism • Online monitoring and surveillance of students and instruction • Identity management in online learning settings • Intellectual property and ownership of course content • Social justice and access to education • Implications for the digital divide and information literacy Guest Editors: Johannes Britz, PhD Professor, School of Information Studies Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee USA britz(a)uwm.edu Michael Zimmer, PhD Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies Director, Center for Information Policy Research University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee USA zimmerm(a)wum.edu Submission guideline: Potential authors are requested to submit an extended abstract (max. 1,000 words) by November 1, 2013. Abstracts may be submitted in the native language of the author though an English translation of this abstract must be included if the chosen language is not English. IRIE will publish articles in English, French, German, Portuguese or Spanish. The author(s) of contributions in French, Portuguese, or Spanish must nominate at least two potential peer reviewers. Abstracts will be evaluated by the guest editors. Deadline for the final article (typically 3,000) is May 15, 2014. All final articles must conform to the IRIE style sheet and submission guidelines. All full submissions will be subject to external peer review. Therefore, the acceptance of an extended abstract does not imply the publication of the final text, unless the article has passed the peer review and revisions (if required) have been included in the text. All submissions should be sent by email with ‘IRIE-Digital Education Submission’ in the header to Michael Zimmer: zimmerm(a)uwm.edu For more information about the journal see: http://www.i-r-i-e.net

Hi Jenny You could use NVivo for this. http://www.qsrinternational.com/products_nvivo.aspx Not everyone likes it, but I've found it pretty easy to use so far.
