by Robert Comber 07 Jan '12

07 Jan '12

=======================FINAL CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ======================= CHI2012 Workshop on 'Food and Interaction Design' Apologies for cross-posting, this may be of interest to some! IMPORTANT DATES ================ Submission: January 13th, 2012 - 2-4 page position paper. Notification: February 10th, 2012. Workshop: May 6th, 2012. More information can be found on the workshop website at http://di.ncl.ac.uk/foodixd/ The intersection between food and interaction design presents an interesting challenge to the HCI community in attending to the pervasive nature of food, the socio-cultural differences in food practices and a changing global foodscape. We propose a one-day workshop that aims to bring together researchers involved in studying in areas of food and human-computer interaction. The workshop will be organized with a poster session to foster discussion, followed by a working session that will include a visit to and collaboration with a local food co-op to capture local food related practices. At the end of the workshop we aim to discuss the role of food in HCI, to better understand daily food practices within existing environments and develop design proposals aiming to support production and consumption of food towards health, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures. We are also exploring options for a special issue of a journal to focus on the current state of research in this area. We are looking for contributions in the field of food, HCI and interaction design in the following areas: * Perspectives from multiple disciplines * Food and ecological sustainability, alternative food cultures, food experiences, healthy diets and wellbeing * Studies on daily practices, values and social norms * Behavior change (models) and community actions * Measurability of food consumption and waste * Design frameworks for human-food interaction Submissions from other areas will be considered depending on their relevance and unique contribution to the workshop and the field. Participants will be required to submit a 2-4 page position paper which addresses the issue of food and interaction design. In particular, papers addressing the everyday aspects of food and interaction design in themes of health and wellbeing, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures will be especially welcome. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. CFP: "The End of the Phone System"
by Richard Taylor 07 Jan '12

07 Jan '12

Colleagues, With apologies for cross-postings. Please feel free to direct any questions to me at rdt4(a)psu.edu. Prof. Richard Taylor Institute for Information Policy The Pennsylvania State University Call for Paper Proposals The End of the Phone System A by-invitation Experts' Workshop to be held at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA, May 16-18, 2012 The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the collection of technologies known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) are the foundations of communications policy throughout the world. As traffic and industry activity migrate to Internet protocol-based communication, wireless networks, video, and other systems, however, the obsolescence of these infrastructures is in sight. The transition from the phone system to converged IP-based networks raises major regulatory, technical and economic questions. Legacy rules do not address the role of regulation in the coming all-IP marketplace. The Internet was never designed to serve the many roles that the traditional phone network plays and there is no plan in place for a managed transition as with digital television and number portability. The time has come to tackle these questions. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University, The Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center at Fordham University are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals in which "The End of the Phone System" serves as the main theme. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a two day (May 17th and 18th) by-invitation workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts and to be held at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The workshop will open with a reception on May 16th. This Workshop is one of a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation. Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy (www.jip-online.org) Invited topics include, but are not limited to: . The future of common carriage in an all-IP environment . The need for, and specifics of, a "date certain" sunset of the PSTN . Technical and marketplace dynamics of the transition . Impacts on universal service, disability access, emergency services (911), and public safety . Interconnection and interoperability issues . Interaction of technical standards and public policy . Network reliability, quality of service, and security in a post-PSTN world . Wireless as a "baseline" communications mechanism . International comparisons . Implications for the National Broadband Plan . Impacts on rural and other under-served areas . Treatment of carrier and non-carrier stranded assets . Consumer protection and device replacement considerations . Impacts on states and the state/federal regulatory balance . Transition from the inter-carrier compensation system Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be submitted to pennstateiip(a)psu.edu by February 15, 2012. Please write IIPWDMTWS: YOUR NAME in the subject line. Accepted presenters will be notified by March 10, 2012.

Final Call for Papers/Participation: Danish Sociology Conference (Online Identities Workshop) Aarhus 19-20 January
by Paul Candon 06 Jan '12

06 Jan '12

Dear All I am organising a workshop on radical identity performance online, as part of the Danish Sociology Conference at Aarhus, 19-20 January 2012. The deadline for abstracts (to candonp(a)tcd.ie) has been extended to January 9th. I am seeking both formal papers and those interested in participating less formally in the workshop. Full details are at this link: http://sociologikongres.au.dk/en/workshop-sessions/performing-troubled-and-… This workshop aims to examine the manner in which a complex array of identities – political, cultural, social, and particularly marginal and extreme – are managed and expressed in the online sphere. It seeks to gauge the impact or influence of such sites of identity performance and how the online space itself might serve to advance or hinder the expression of identities which may manifest themselves primarily in this realm. The session will also re-examine the original ideas (e.g. Turkle 1999) concerning the performance of online identity with allied questions about public/private, legality, censorship, ‘net neutrality’, hate speech, social movements and the interaction of media, Internet and society. Potential contributions could be drawn from studies of: - extreme political movements - end of life/suicide forums - diverse sexuality - deviance - anarchism - art as protest Thanks for your help. Final call for chapters: Advancing Social and Business Research Methods with New Media Technologies
by Natalie Sappleton 06 Jan '12

06 Jan '12

A reminder that the call for chapters for Advancing Social and Business Research Methods with New Media Technologies closes on January 30th. This volume will be published in 2013 by IGI Global. Submissions are invited by email to n.sappleton(a)mmu.ac.uk. Full details of the call are posted below. Happy New Year! ************************************** Introduction The 21st century has presented the professional researcher with a myriad of challenges and opportunities. In particular, there are a number of new and exciting digital technologies, which offer researchers considerable advantages in terms of speed, access connectivity and economy. Skype and other Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) applications allow practitioners to carry out face-to-face interviews with research subjects thousands of miles away and in different time zones. Short attitudinal surveys can be sent via text message. Online surveys are now no longer confined to public opinion research, but can be adapted for a myriad of research objectives. Researchers all over the world are using these new, innovative methods to design and develop research programmes, but until now, no tome has brought together their work in a single publication. This edited volume will form a comprehensive introduction to new media technologies and their applicability to the world of business and social research. The book will comprise both discussions of new technologies, as well as real-life examples of their use in various disciplines, from psychology to political science. Together, this approach aims to reduce scholar's anxiety about adapting these new technologies for use in their own work. Objective of the Book There are already in existence a number of manuals and textbooks that critique and provide guidance on traditional research methodologies such as pen-and-paper surveys and telephone interviews. There is also a growing body of journal articles and unpublished papers outlining the use of new technologies in research activities. But, there is no single, edited volume that examines the applicability and usefulness of new technologies to academic research, including experiments, surveys, field studies, secondary research, content analysis, ethnography and focus groups. These technologies offer a wealth of opportunities to the research practitioner, but without prior knowledge of how these technologies can, should, and should not be used, researchers may experience a degree of anxiety when considering their use. The overall mission of this valuable publication is therefore to aid researchers in recognizing the advantages of speed, economy, interactivity, and connectivity that these technologies offer, to alert them to the pitfalls of these methods, and to provide a foundation on which they can build reliable, sound and scientific research projects. Target Audience This volume is aimed at research practitioners at all academic levels, from Masters students to Professors. These readers will be able to use the case studies as a practical guide to designing and conducting their own research projects. This volume is not limited to scholars in any particular discipline. Social scientists of all backgrounds will find use from this book. Additionally, most pre-doctoral courses include electives or compulsory subjects in research methodology, so the market for this volume is potentially very large. A mix of contributors from the UK, US, Europe and other countries will be deliberately selected to increase the appeal of the book to a world market. Submissions Excellent case studies detailing the use of new technologies in empirical research are sought for this volume. Additionally, chapters dealing with theoretical issues in planning, designing and developing research studies using new technologies are also welcome. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks, empirical research findings, and practitioners' best practices in the use of new technologies. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to the following: · History of technology in research · Impact of new technologies on research epistemologies and ontologies · Electronic forms of data acquisition · Email and Web Surveys · Mobile Text Messaging · Online diaries · Blogging · Instant Messaging · Virtual Focus Groups · Skype and VOIP platforms · Video sharing websites and research methods · Collaborative authoring Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before January 30th 2012, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by February 25th, 2012 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by April 30th, 2012. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference,” “Business Science Reference,” and “Engineering Science Reference” imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com<http://www.igi-global.com>. It is anticipated that this book will be released in 2013. Important Dates January 30th 2012: Proposal Submission Deadline April 30th 2012: Full Chapter Submission June 15th, 2012: Review Results Returned July 30th 2012: Final Chapter Submission Enquiries and submissions should be forwarded electronically as a Word or PDF document by email to: Natalie Sappleton: n.sappleton(a)mmu.ac.uk<mailto:n.sappleton@mmu.ac.uk> Tel: +44 161 247 6249 "Before acting on this email or opening any attachments you should read the Manchester Metropolitan University email disclaimer available on its website http://www.mmu.ac.uk/emaildisclaimer "

Kind regards, Koen Leurs | Phd student Graduate Gender Programme | Utrecht University | Muntstraat 2a, 3512 EV Utrecht | tel. 030-253 7859 | K.H.A.Leurs(a)uu.nl | www.uu.nl/wiredup | www.koenleurs.net | www.digitalcrossroads.nl ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Apologies for cross-posting* CALL FOR PAPERS: Digital Crossroads: Media, Migration and Diaspora in a Transnational Perspective Conference website: http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl<http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl/>. Conference 28-30 June, 2012, Utrecht, the Netherlands Deadline for abstract submission and panel proposals: January 10, 2012 Conference chair: Sandra Ponzanesi Conference coordinator: Fadi Hirzalla Because of the disjunctive and unstable interplay of commerce, media, national policies, and consumer fantasies, ethnicity, once a genie contained in the bottle of some sort of locality (however large), has now become a global force, forever slipping in and through the cracks between states and borders - Appadurai 1996, p. 41, Modernity at Large Keynote speakers: Shakuntala Banaji London School of Economics and Political Science, UK Kirsten Drotner University of Southern Denmark, Denmark Radhika Gajjala Bowling Green State University, USA Eva Lam University of Northwestern, USA Lisa Nakamura University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA Liesbet van Zoonen Loughborough University, UK and Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands The rapid development of digital technologies has radically transformed ways of keeping in touch with home cultures and diasporic networks. Moreover, the notion of migration has undergone significant shifts, coming to signify imaginaries on the move which are not necessarily linked to geographical displacement. The aim of this conference is to address the relationship between migration and digital technologies across national contexts and ethnic belonging. Migrancy embeds many of the local and global paradoxes that also pertain to digital media with their compression of space and time. However, the link between the two fields is still under-theorized and in need of more situated and comparative analysis. Drawing from approaches from the humanities and social sciences (media theory, communication studies, learning sciences, gender studies, cultural studies, postcolonial theory, migration and transnational studies, among others), the primary aim of this conference is to explore how the study of digitalization and migration challenges existing notions of diaspora, identity, nation, family, learning, literacy, social networks, youth, body, gender and ethnicity, asking for new approaches and a rethinking of traditional social and cultural categories. The conference will consider the following questions, among others: How has the development of new digital technologies changed the experience of migration? Conversely, how has the reality of migration impacted on the use, development and distribution of new media technologies? How does the use of media differ among different migrant generations? How does media literacy impact on issues of integration and socialization in a hosting country? What are the differences in media access, diffusion and use among different migrant communities across the world? How are race, gender, age, class, ethnicity and other markers of identity recodified online? How are transnational relationships and resources arrayed in networks? How do ideas and practices move across these networks? How is the notion of home or community, which is no longer locatable with a "here" and "there" reconceptualised through digital diasporas? How do these developments impact on the spaces for learning and education, which are no longer limited to place-based classrooms and curricula? How can learning processes and networks be conceptualised when these networks expand larger geographical distances, and multiple communities are crossed? What resources of identity do migrants draw on and how are these resources hybridized in practice, and related to their learning and socialization processes? In short, how are digital crossroads created, distributed and experienced in the context of migration, diaspora and transnationalism? The conference will explore three inter-related strands of the relationships between media and migration: Identity and diaspora (Strand 1) - identity and performativity - gender, race, ethnicity, religion and online communities - digital borders, digital diasporas - imagined communities, transnationalism and mobility - digital divides (generational, access, skills, user-generated content) - cultural industry, participatory culture and social media Migrant networks (Strand 2) - mediated spatialities - relations between online and offline worlds - affinity networks and intimacy - media literacy and migration - comparative perspectives on digital media practices Learning in a globalized world (Strand 3) - informal learning in the digital space - network approaches to learning - immigrant learning - globalization and learning - learning & identity - socialization in transnational families Please send 300-word abstracts for papers or 500-word panel proposals for 3 to 4 presentations by 10 January 2012. Submission should be made online via http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl<http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl/>. See further submission instructions on the website. Notification of acceptance will be given by 20 February, 2012. For more information or questions please send an e-mail to info(a)digitalcrossroads.nl<mailto:info@digitalcrossroads.nl>. Open access sites that charge
by Johnson, Thomas J 04 Jan '12

04 Jan '12

I was just asked to be an editor for an article for the Sage Open Access space. Sage currently charges about $350 for an article to appear in the open area space. First, I am not quite sure how this works. Articles are reviewed and presumably revised, but is the review process actually meaningful? That is, can a poorly reviewed article still get in the Open Access space or is space such as this only reserved for peer-reviewed articles? Would you recommend being an editor for an arrangement such as this? Tom
