choice of crawler?
by Anders Koed Madsen 18 Jan '11

18 Jan '11

Dear AoiR´s I am currently about to embark on a longitudinal hyperlink-analysis in which the aim is to follow the links from 20 seed URLs over a time-span of one year. My plan is to do some quantitative analysis on the networks and I have conducted a pilot-study using Issue-crawler (http://www.issuecrawler.net/) in combination with UCInet (http://www.analytictech.com/ucinet/) Before making a final decision on which crawler to use I just wanted to know whether anyone of you have opinions about the the Issue-crawler in comparison to SoSciBot (http://socscibot.wlv.ac.uk/) and VOSON (http://voson.anu.edu.au/) or other crawlers. So: - What are the pro and cons of the different software-packages? - Does any of them allow for detecting the timestamp of the link (when is it placed)? Or do you know of any crawlers that do that? - Can the results of SoSciBot and VOSON be exported into UCI-net as well (I haven´t been able to figure that out from the sites)? All the best, Anders Koed Madsen

Just a quick question
by Ehon Chan 18 Jan '11

18 Jan '11

Hi guys, I am currently volunteering with Volunteering Queensland in the office and one of the things we've been getting volunteers to do is to retrieve data from emails into forms. *The story*: the old form system sends us a text email when someone fills in their details on our volunteer form. During the Queensland floods last week, we have a major influx of volunteers and our website went down so we created a new website + form system which is a lot better, obviously, to collate volunteer forms. However, this means we now have to transfer all the details we have received before this new system (transferring from text email) into the new form / system. I am wondering if there is a way program something that can scan through emails, get all the appropriate data and put it in the right column in the new form? Or even into an excel spreadsheet. Cheers, Ehon Chan

call for papers on organizations and social network sites
by Charles Steinfield 17 Jan '11

17 Jan '11

Dear Colleagues, For those of you interested in research on social network sites in organizational settings, please consider submitting your work to the following workshop. Please forward to colleagues working on this topic. We look forward to hearing from you! Regards, Charles Steinfield and Marleen Huysman Call for Papers A Workshop On “Organizations and Social Network Sites” International Conference on Communities and Technologies Brisbane, June 29 – July 2, 2011 http://ct2011.urbaninformatics.net/ Rationale Social network sites (SNS) are increasingly being used in organizational settings to improve relationships among employees and enhance prospects for information exchange and cooperative work. The bulk of the research on SNS, however, focuses on their use by young people and students. While this work has produced significant insights into user behaviors and impacts of SNS use, more work that takes into account the organizational context is needed. Hence, this workshop will bring together researchers examining SNS use in organizations. SNS use in organizational settings may differ in important ways from student use. For example, people using a workplace SNS may use it in more instrumental and goal oriented ways, based on organizational requirements. There may be less uninhibited humor and playful content, less self-disclosure and self-presentation, depending on the organizational cultural context, if users know that supervisors are viewing SNS interactions. Information sharing may be more difficult due to concerns about proprietary data. These differences may lead to different outcomes from SNS use in organizational settings than have been observed among students and young people. Studies of SNS use in the workplace suggest that this is an emerging and fertile area of work that is beginning to attract a community of researchers. Case studies of Facebook and LinkedIn use in the workpace reveal the tensions that are created when work and home networks collide. Among the awkward situations generated by what is coming to be known as “context collapse” are when competing clients friend the same salesperson, or when a manager asks to be friends with subordinates. The user faced with such situations may be unable to refuse the requests, and has to alter usage behavior or risk alienating important clients or reveal information that may cause his or her standing at work to be diminished. Some companies, particularly large technology companies, have created their own internal SNS software. A series of studies of IBM’s Beehive system (now known as Social Blue) reveals that such sites can attract large numbers of employees from around the world, can aid in socialization of new employees, and can enhance employees’ access to new people and sources of expertise around the company. In addition to the private and internally developed systems like Beehive, a host of competing enterprise social network site providers such as Yammer, SocialText, INgage Networks, NewsGator, Spigit, and other vendors have rushed to provide products for this emerging market. If you are investigating any aspect of the development, use, and impacts of social network sites in organizational settings, we invite you to submit a paper to this workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the Fifth International Conference on Communities and Technologies (C&T 2011) in Brisbane, Australia on June 29, 2011. Suggested Topics We will encourage paper submissions that address the development, use, and impacts of social network software in organizational settings. Social science research is particularly welcomed. Topics include, but are not limited to: - Case studies of public and private SNS in the workplace - Tensions between work and non-work use of public SNS - Identify management in organizational SNS - Consumer behavior and SNS - Expertise sharing and SNS - Social capital at work and SNS - SNS as a tool for organizational socialization - ‘Digital natives’ entering corporate world and its effect on SNS use - Organizational learning and SNS use - Business communities and SNS - Global organizations, cross cultural issues and SNS Key Dates - April 1: Submission of an extended abstract (1500 words). Full papers are also acceptable. - April 15, acceptance notifications sent out - June 1, final papers due (7000-10,000 words) - June 29, workshop Author Guidelines Extended abstracts and/or papers should be written in English and submitted via email to the workshop organizers at steinfie(a)msu.edu and mhuysman(a)feweb.vu.nl . Extended abstracts should be approximately 1500 words, while final papers should be between 7000 and 10,000 words, including references, tables, figures, and footnotes. Manuscripts should follow APA style guidelines for citations and formatting. Publication Prospects After the workshop, several papers will be selected and invited for submission for a journal publication. Presently we are in discussions with the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication about the possibility of a special issue on this topic. If the special issue is approved, all papers will undergo a double-blind review at the journal. However, we will work with the authors of selected papers to revise their papers to increase the likelihood of acceptance at JCMC. Workshop Organizers Charles Steinfield, Michigan State University (steinfie(a)msu.edu) Marleen Huysman, VU University Amsterdam (mhuysman(a)feweb.vu.nl) -------------------------------------- Charles Steinfield Professor and Chair Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824 USA email: steinfie(a)msu.edu tel: +1 517 355 8372

COMETS 2011 - 2nd International Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation - Call for Papers
by Daniele Gianni 17 Jan '11

17 Jan '11

Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CfP) ################################################################# IEEE WETICE 2011 2nd International Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation CALL FOR PAPERS ################################################################# June 27 - June 29, 2011, Paris (France) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/CoMetS11 ################################################################# # Papers Due: *** March 5, 2011 *** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # by the IEEE Computer Society Press and indexed by EI. ################################################################# Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non–exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: * collaborative environments for M&S * collaborative Systems of Systems M&S * workflow modelling for collaborative environments and processes * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * collaborative component-based M&S * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance evaluation of collaborative networks * model-driven simulation engineering * domain specific languages for the simulation of collaborative environments * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S * databases and repositories for M&S * distributed virtual environments * virtual research environment for M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the track maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'11 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the track research area. Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF) and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Accepted full papers will be included in the proceedings and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE approval pending). Please note that at least one author for each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2011 to have the paper published in the proceedings. Authors may contact the organizers for expression of interests and content appropriateness at any time. Papers can be submitted in PDF format at the submission site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=comets2011) which is supported by the EasyChair conference management system. Please contact the track chairs (comets2011(a)easychair.org) if you experience problems with the EasyChair Web site. +++++++++++++++ Important Dates +++++++++++++++ * Submission Deadline: March 5, 2011 * Decision to paper authors: April 4, 2011 * Final version of accepted papers due to IEEE: April 29, 2011 * Conference dates: June 27 - June 29, 2011 ++++++++++++++++++++ Organizing Committee ++++++++++++++++++++ * Andrea D'Ambrogio, University of Roma TorVergata, Italy * Daniele Gianni, European Space Agency, The Netherlands * Joachim Fuchs, European Space Agency, The Netherlands * Giuseppe Iazeolla, University of Roma TorVergata, Italy +++++++++++++++++ Program Committee +++++++++++++++++ * Santiago Balestrini, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA * Torsten Bieler, European Space Agency, The Netherlands * Olivier Dalle, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, CNRS & INRIA, France * Joseph Giampapa, SEI, Carnegie Mellon University, USA * Ralph Huntsinger, Beijng University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China and California State University, USA * Axel Lehmann, Universitaet der Bundeswehr Muenchen, Germany * Cristiano Leorato, Rhea, The Netherlands * Brian Lewis, Vanguard Software Corporation, USA * Steve McKeever, University of Oxford, UK * David Nickerson, Auckland Bioengineering Institute, NZ * Alfred Park, IBM T.J. DEADLINE APPROACHING: Rethinking the Culture of Busyness and IT: NSF-sponsored symposium
by Gilly Leshed 17 Jan '11

17 Jan '11

---------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- “Slow Down, You Move Too Fast”: Rethinking the Culture of Busyness and IT NSF-Sponsored Symposium Seattle, WA May 6-7, 2011 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We live in a culture of busyness: in developed countries, many of us feel rushed, overloaded and overworked, yet we value the idea of doing more in less time. In this culture, information technologies (IT) are intended to free us from hard labor and save us time: e-mail is sent immediately, e-shopping saves us from trudging through malls, status updates and microblogging give us quick glimpses into friends’ lives, and smartphones make it all instantly accessible on the go. At the same time, our use of IT may affect experiences of time in other ways: facilitating fragmentation and micro-coordination of work, inadvertently or insidiously redistributing labor and responsibility, making accessible an overabundance of information, products and services among which we feel obligated to choose properly, and increasing our availability to anyone, anytime and anywhere. What role does technology actually play in promoting a culture of busyness? Can technology be designed purposely against a cultural mainstream of productivity, encouraging slowing down, reflection, and pause? To what extent could such technology be relevant to task-centric workplaces or busy homes with multiple family members coordinating their activities? The goal of this NSF-funded symposium is to foster an interdisciplinary research community that draws from the social sciences, science & technology studies, organization and management science, and technology design to address the following questions: (1) What are the roles of IT in coping with and/or promoting a culture of busyness? We aim to identify theoretical and empirical gaps in understanding sociotechnical aspects of busyness at the individual, organizational, and societal level. (2) To what extent is it possible to intervene in the culture of busyness by altering the design of IT or its use practices? We will identify both technical and social opportunities and challenges in the design and application of IT interventions for this purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PARTICIPATION We invite researchers, designers, and practitioners interested in addressing the relationship between technology and the intensification of life in the workplace, at home, and elsewhere. Sample topics include but are not limited to: - Interruption management and the increasing demand on cognitive resources - Information overload in web, internet, and communication technologies, including social media and social networking sites: causes, experiences, coping strategies, and social and cultural responses - Rhetoric and costs of anytime, anywhere access and availability with mobile and awareness technologies - Sociological analysis of uses of technologies for time management, activity and task management, and personal information management - Technology saving whose time, at whose expense and other political questions - Analysis of ties between technologies in domestic environments and the acceleration of home life and leisure - Designing for slowness, reflection, and pause - Analysis of ways technology design redistributes workload either surreptitiously, intentionally, or accidentally, fairly or unfairly, sometimes in the name of “efficiency” - Design and use of technology in cultures embracing other values of time and work - Possibilities for and limitations of interventions based on technology design or changing use practices in any of these topics To participate, please submit a position paper that briefly addresses each of the following questions: 1. What work have you done in this area? How is it related to the theme of this symposium? 2. Identify one or two key issues, challenges, or opportunities you are interested in discussing in this symposium. Why are they important? How do you envision making progress in addressing them? 3. What one piece of research or writing have you found most inspirational for your work in the area? Submissions should be 2-4 pages, using the ACM paper format available at: http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Please send your submission or questions about the symposium to gl87(a)cornell.edu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KEY DATES February 1, 2011: Deadline for position papers March 1, 2011: Notification of acceptance May 6-7, 2011: Symposium ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCATION AND TRAVEL The symposium will take place near the University of Washington campus, Seattle, WA. Travel funding and accommodation at the Waterfront Hotel in Seattle will be offered to one person for each accepted symposium submission. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Gilly Leshed, Department of Communication, Cornell University Phoebe Sengers, Information Science and Science & Technology Studies, Cornell University Helen Nissenbaum, Media, Culture, and Communication & Computer Science, New York University Batya Friedman, The Information School, University of Washington Carman Neustaedter, School of Interactive Arts + Technology, Simon Fraser University ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsored by NSF grant number IIS-1049359: Workshop: Rethinking the Value of Busyness in IT

CfP: Digital politics: Collective action born in and from the Internet. Panel at the ECPR 25-27 August 2011 in Reykjavik
by Mayo FM 16 Jan '11

16 Jan '11

CALL FOR PAPERS - Panel: Digital politics: Collective action born in and from the Internet 6th ECPR General Conference, University of Iceland, 25th - 27th August 2011 DEADLINE for submission of paper abstracts: February 1, 2011 PANEL PRESENTATION: So far, political science research has focused on the use of the Internet by collective political actors that had their main operational base in the offline realm. First studies on the Internet and politics mainly concentrated mostly on well-established and traditional actors such public administration and political parties. Then the cope of research widened to include interest groups, NGOs and social movements looking at the impact of the Internet and the type of Internet use carried out by those groups. In particular, given the growing importance of political campaigns and other forms of collective action that are launched and carried out by networks of political actors, that mainly, if not completely operate and mobilize for their issues online, the debate on the Internet and politics could benefit further from considering actors who mainly operation with an online base. Interestingly, the emergence of collective action in online environments apparently follows new forms of "networked" forms of action and collaboration that are said to be different from political actors with a mainly offline base. The panel "Digital politics" aims to iniciate a discussion on the main organizational and democratic logic of the collective action born in and from the Internet addressing questions such as: What are the main characteristics of participation in online base collective action? How are boundaries drawn between the individual and the collective in such forms? How can we deal with the dialectics of individualization on one hand and the effects of de-personalization on the other hand that are inscribed in online spaces? How is the online space governed and how does its architecture structure online interaction? Finally, which methods are best suited to analyze the practices and dynamics of collective action online adequately? As you may note from the ECPR guidelines, panel organizers are advised to select no more than 5 papers (and no less than 4) as well as 2 further tabled papers. For more information on the panel and submission of paper abstracts, please visit: http://www.ecprnet.eu/conferences/general_conference/reykjavik/panel_detail… Co-chairs: Mayo Fuster Morell (European University Institute) and Johanna Niesyto (University of Siegen) Discussant: Sigrid Baringhorst (University of Siegen) Contact e-mail: mayo.fuster(a)eui.eu About the co-chairs: Mayo Fuster Morell recently concluded her PhD thesis (Governance of online creation communities: Provision of infrastructure for the building of digital commons) at the European University Institute in Florence under the supervision of Professor Donatella della Porta. She explores the democratic logic of the Internet in knowledge-making processes and the relationship between governance models, participation and collaboration growth. She combined a large N statistical analysis and case study comparisons (World Social Forum, Flickr, Wikihow and Wikipedia). In 2008, she was visiting researcher at the School of Information – University of California Berkeley (sponsored by Howard Rheingold and Coye Cheshire) and provided teaching assistance at the Communication Department – Stanford University.
