The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University seeks an experienced scholar and leader committed to interdisciplinarity to serve as department chair at the rank of associate or full professor. The chair will lead our collaborative, multidisciplinary department in implementing a shared vision for excellence in scholarship, creative work, and teaching. The chair will be responsible for developing and supporting new departmental initiatives as well as ongoing efforts to foster innovative interdisciplinary research and advance graduate and undergraduate programs. An Anthropological Approach to mHealth is based on ten 16-month ethnographies in settings across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America that showed how conventional health apps may be irrelevant particularly for older people. Instead, the studies found that many people use their mobile and smartphones for health purposes to a surprising extent. They take the communicative apps they have become comfortable with, such as LINE, WeChat and WhatsApp, and are highly creative in turning them into their own health apps. These are the practices from which this book seeks to learn, in what we call a 'smart-from-below' approach. This body of research also provided many additional insights, including the consequences of googling for health information, the role of the smartphone in specific settings such as an oncology clinic in Chile or tele-psychotherapy in Uganda, and the lessons learnt during Covid-19 around the problems in self-tracking. Overall, the authors show how an anthropological approach situated in the observation of everyday life can be the foundation for an alternative but highly promising perspective on the future of mHealth. How can judges – or social media platforms – navigate the gray areas between satire and defamation, provocative jokes and hate speech, or parody and copyright violation? These challenges have become increasingly daunting in the digital age, with ironic ambiguity and context collapse playing a key role in online communication. Moreover, generative AI (e.g. deepfakes) has further muddled the line between legitimate creative reuse on the one hand (as in parody or satire), and the violation of personal or IP rights on the other. The toolkit, which is scheduled for release in January 2025, is primarily intended for legal professionals and Trust & Safety agents, with the aim of helping them establish an informed, well-balanced, and consistent approach to humorous expression in light of both human rights law and interdisciplinary humor research. However, it will also be of interest to policymakers and advocacy groups, by addressing topical questions concerning both the protection of lawful humorous expression and the adjudication of illegal or borderline (albeit superficially humorous) content. Lastly, it aims to assist humor creators of all types – from comedians and cartoonists to ‘ordinary’ social media users – in gaining awareness of their rights, while also highlighting the links between certain types of derogatory humor, hate, and harm. The authors will present on the four main sections of the toolkit: I. Interpreting humor in context, II. Authoritarian crackdowns on humor and satire, III. Call for Papers ECREA Communication & Democracy Section Off-Year Conference Automating Democracy: AI Use Between Social Justice and Social Control Erasmus University Rotterdam, 22-23 May 2025 Deadline for abstracts: January 15, 2025 https://automatingdemocracy.wordpress.com/ Dear colleagues, We invite submissions for the ECREA Communication & Democracy Section's off-year conference, Automating Democracy: AI Use Between Social Justice and Social Control, hosted by the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication in Rotterdam on May 22-23, 2025. This conference will explore the transformative effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on democratic processes, focusing on two inter-related themes: · AI & governance · AI & citizen participation We welcome a broad range of submissions engaging with both practical applications of AI and the technological hype through which AI is represented and talked about in political life. We are interested in questions such as: How is the technological hype around AI impacting contemporary democratic imaginaries? What would civic-oriented AI solutions entail? How are public discussions about automated decision-making informing the public sector’s propensity towards implementing such solutions in governance? How can citizens call for the development of ethical and transparent AI-use in governance? What are citizens and public authorities doing with AI? To what extent can AI facilitate citizen mobilization and political participation? The conference will bring together faculty, PhD students and research MA students conducting critical research to examine AI’s potential in advancing social justice and inclusion, as well as its capacity for social control and marginalization. We are particularly interested in theoretical and empirical contributions that explore the role of AI in (re)shaping public policy, governance practices and democratic oversight; and, the role of AI in empowering or suppressing political participation, citizen activism and social movements. The two-day event will include two keynote lectures, panel discussions, and a practitioner-scholar roundtable. This roundtable will provide a platform for dialogue between civil society representatives and participants on current practices and challenges of AI-use for progressive social change. Call for papers: ECPR Joint Session workshop on Digital Authoritarianism

Dear colleague, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing today because Gregory Asmolov (King’s College London) and I are organizing a workshop titled “Multifaceted Dimensions of Digital Authoritarianism”. The call can be found here: https://ecpr.eu/Events/Event/WorkshopDetails/15639 The workshop will take place within the 2025 ECPR Joint Sessions which will be held at Charles University in late May. The workshop aims to contribute to an in-depth understanding of the rise of new forms of digital authoritarianism by focusing on interdisciplinary comparative research across cases in both the Global South and Global North. It aims to further develop theoretical frameworks that support critical engagement with the role of information and communication technologies in authoritarian regimes. the design of workshop offers the perfect environment to go for a deep dive, beyond the sometimes short-lived discussions we have at conferences. Gregory and I would therefore appreciate your consideration to submit a paper project to the workshop via the ECPR website, the deadline is November 21st.
