Reminder: CFP Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories
by Honglei Li 31 Mar '10

31 Mar '10

CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Extended Proposal Submission Deadline: April 13, 2010 Virtual Community Participation and Motivation: Cross-Disciplinary Theories A book edited by Dr. Honglei Li Swansea University, United Kingdom To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=762 Introduction This book intends to give a comprehensive view on virtual community participation. With the power to gather people with similar interests together, virtual communities have gained attention by not only practitioners, but researchers, as well. Various studies have been done to explore why people participate in virtual communities since it is only after aggregating a certain amount of members that a virtual community can be viable. Virtual community participation refers to those behaviours in which members mainly participate. Basically, past researchers have found two types of behaviours: lurking and active participation. Although many studies discussed the motivations to participate in virtual communities, including gift economy, pursuit of power, sense of belonging, sense of inclusion, relationship building, and so forth, none of them have given a clear and comprehensive framework on the reasons for virtual community participation. As the field is now in a position to call for a synthesis publication to integrate all aspects of virtual community participation theories, it’s important to edit a book to give both researchers and general virtual community practitioner the theoretical guidelines. This book will bring together the issues that managers, practitioners, and researchers must consider when planning, implementing, and managing members in virtual communities. Objective of the Book The book gives in-depth coverage of state-of-the-art research on virtual community participation. It first covers the concept of virtual community participation, followed by several streams of virtual community participation theories. It will be written for professionals, researchers, practitioners, and designers who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of virtual community participation within the development of digital communication. Target Audience This book appeals to those interested not only in virtual communities, but also in virtual worlds, virtual teams, and even online shopping. Virtual community researchers, as well as researchers from diverse fields--computer science, information systems, psychology, sociology, and telecommunications--will find valuable motivation theories discussed in this book. But this book appeals to more than just researchers. Practitioners and managers looking to organize virtual communities efficiently and effectively will also benefit from the case discussions, empirical studies, and data analysis. In addition, upper-level and graduate-level students will find this research useful in their course work and research. Finally, this book will be a welcome addition to academic libraries' research collections. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: --Virtual community participation behavior definition --Discussion of various virtual community behaviors --The interpersonal relationship reason of virtual community participation --The social capital perspective of virtual community participation --The attachment of virtual community participation --The belonging or inclusion perspective of participation -- Gift economy perspective of virtual community participation --Frameworks to explain virtual community participation --Behavior theories --Social psychological perspective of virtual community participation --The power side of virtual community participation --Knowledge management motivation to participation --The communicational perspective to participate --The psychological perspective to participate --The process virtualization perspective to participate Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 13, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by May 28, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 13, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Gephi - open visualization platform for networks
by Sébastien Heymann 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

Hi, If you need to visualize and analyze internet or social networks, this software could help: http://gephi.org. This open source platform aims to explore graphs and complex systems like you manipulate images in Photoshop. This is currently the fastest graph visualization engine in open source, and provide an interactive way to handle networks, apply layouts and metrics, filter data and see the dynamics. It's free and runs on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X. Watch an introduction in video here: http://vimeo.com/9726202 A quick start tutorial is available here: http://gephi.org/2010/quick-start-tutorial/ You can test it with some datasets like the structure of the Internet made by Mark Newman in 2006: http://gephi.org/datasets/internet_routers-22july06.gml.zip. Other datasets are available here: http://wiki.gephi.org/index.php?title=Datasets If you plan to apply for the ESF conference "Future Internet and Society: A Complex Systems Perspective" ( http://www.esf.org/activities/esf-conferences/details/2010/confdetail341/34…) you may use Gephi to speed up your researches and present your results. Affective fabrics of digital cultures: registration is now open
by Adi Kuntsman 26 Mar '10

26 Mar '10

Affective fabrics of digital cultures: feelings, technologies, politics. 3-4 June 2010, University Place, The University of Manchester To register, please visit the conference website http://www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/ricc/events/digital_affect/index… Plenary speakers: Una Chung (Sarah Lawrence College); Patricia Clough (Queens College, CUNY); Anne-Marie Fortier (Lancaster University); Melissa Gregg (The University of Sydney); Athina Karatzogianni (The University of Hull) This two-day international conference brings into creative tension two fields that are receiving growing scholarly attention: cultural studies of affect, public feelings and the politics of emotion, on the one hand, and scholarship on digital culture, new media and information-communication technologies, on the other. The conference aims to create a space for intellectual dialogue between the two fields by examining the relations between technologies, and in particular, new digital technologies -- the Internet, digital cinema and photography, mobile communication, CCTVs, computer games -- and affective politics. Bringing together contributions from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, arts, politics and science and technology studies, the conference will engage with the following questions: How does affect work in on-line networks and digital assemblages? What are the affective regimes of on-line sociality? What kind of perceptions, sensations, affective movements and public feelings emerge in our highly mediated and digitalised environments? What is the cybertouch of war, violence, terror? What are the structures of feeling that operate in the digitalised everyday and computerised ordinary? How can we theorise psycho-political formations of nation, race, empire, population and generation in the age of digital reproduction, mediated visions and globalised communication technologies? How do digital cultures shape our political horizons of fear, anxiety, mourning, hate, hope? Registration Early Bird Registration Fee before 15th April: Waged: £60/ Unwaged: £35 Full Conference Registration Fee after 15th April: Waged: £80/ Unwaged: £45 Registration fee covers refreshments, lunch and wine reception. Hi Holly, Tama and AoIR researchers, There are a lot of virtual ethnography-related videos (and some audio, as well) here at webnographers.org - http://www.webnographers.org/index.php?title=Videos, [1] with an invitation to post more to this wiki, as you find them. Webnographers.org has a lot of resources! I think resources will grow here, as well, at World University & School's "Media Studies" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Media_Studies. [2] There's already a free Ph.D. at Harvard in Education listed here for 2011 and 2012: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#Free_Ph.D.s. [3] I'm curious what free Ph.D.s and degrees there are in your countries in your academic fields, and generally. Please let me know, so that you or I can add them to this wiki page, and so that good students . World University and School is an open, free, "edit this page," University and School - like Wikipedia with MIT Open Courseware and Berkeley Webcast (http://webcast.berkeley.edu) [4] All the best, Scott http://scottmacleod.com [5] http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University [6] Links: ------ [1] http://www.webnographers.org/index.php?title=Videos, [2] http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Media_Studies.
