Semantic web - social data on the web (SDoW)
by MARZIO VENEMAN 07 Aug '09

07 Aug '09

Dear subscribers Air-L, With reference to social data on the web (SDOW), I take pleasure informing you as follows: === <http://semanticweb.org/wiki/Main_Page> <http://sdow.semanticweb.org/> The Semantic Web is the extension of the World Wide Web that enables people to share content beyond the boundaries of applications and websites. It has been described in rather different ways: as a utopic vision, as a web of data, or merely as a natural paradigm shift in our daily use of the Web. Most of all, the Semantic Web has inspired and engaged many people to create innovative semantic technologies and applications. semanticweb.org is the common platform for this community. You can extend semanticweb.org. Make sure that your favourite semantic tool, event, or ontology is here! === I trust this information is sufficient for your purposes, in case you require any additional details, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned. . Syllabus suggestions - phD seminar in online relationships
by Nicole Ellison 06 Aug '09

06 Aug '09

Hi all, I am currently putting together my syllabus for a PhD-level seminar focusing on the Internet and social relationships, and am interested in seeing similar syllabi or recommendations for scholarship that should be included. To give you a sense of the topic, currently I plan to include readings on the following: historical overview of technology & social interactions; social networks & how they are reshaped by communication technologies, self-presentation and impression formation processes, online/offline interactions, friendship, and new theorizing about the topic. I currently am considering work by Wellman, Walther, Baym, Baron, boyd, and others whose last names do not start with W or B. Please send me suggestions you might have for pieces you feel are particularly important, interesting, or innovative. Alternatively I'd love to see syllabi for related classes, grad or undergrad. Thank you! Nicole

Sources on activism and social technologies
by Anastasia Kavada 06 Aug '09

06 Aug '09

Dear all, I am currently investigating the potential of the 'participatory web' (mainly social networking, video and photo-sharing sites) for activism and political participation and I'm looking to expand my list of references. I am particularly interested in chapters and journal articles based on concrete empirical research and case studies. In my experience, there is a shortage of published research in this area (I guess it's stil too early for the slow cycles of academic publishing), so I'd also be interested in any working or conference papers on the issue. I will compile a bibliography with the references that you suggest and the ones already in my database and publish it on the aoir list. Please feel free to also contact me off list at A.Kavada(a)westminster.ac.uk . More recently, Web 2.0 offered new perspectives regarding information sharing, annotation, and social networking on the Web. It opens new research areas for the Semantic Web which has an important role to play to lead to the emergence of a Social Semantic Web that should provide novel services to end-users, combining the best of both Semantic Web and Web 2.0 worlds. To achieve this goal, various tasks and features are needed from data modelling and lightweight ontologies, to knowledge and social networks portability as well as ways to interlink data between Social Media websites, levering proprietary data silos to a Giant Global Graph. Following the successful SDoW2008 workshop at ISWC2008, SDoW2009 aims to bring together Semantic Web experts and Web 2.0 practitioners and users to discuss the application of semantic technologies to data from the Social Web. by Andrew Long 05 Aug '09

05 Aug '09

Dear Subscribers - IRGO is pleased to be hosting the inaugural IRGO unConference on the 23rd and 24th of November 2009 at the Centre for Innovation, University of Otago, Dunedin (New Zealand). The topic of the unConference is "New Zealand's Digital Futures." Our opening address will be by Professor Greg Hearn, Director of the Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation at QUT. Our closing speaker will be announced shortly. The unConference aims to bring together scholars and practitioners from around the region to discuss the future of the internet from multiple perspectives. In particular, the conference will focus around three key questions. Firstly, what might be possible for the future internet of the region? Secondly, what will citizens want from the internet in the future (two, five, ten years ahead)? And thirdly, what potential internet problems or issues will we have to navigate in the immediate future? As this is an unConference, the direction of the discussion is up to you. We are using a submission system where people can suggest topics for panels, nominate panelists, and even vote topics up or down. The final list of topics will be decided by popular vote -- and you do not need to be a registered attendee to vote! We will be making conference artifacts available online, so anyone interested can nominate and vote on topics. Finally, thanks to University of Otago, registration is FREE. However, places are limited, so please register ASAP to confirm your place. For general information on the conference: http://irgo.otago.ac.nz/glance.html To connect to the submissions system: http://irgo.otago.ac.nz/submissions.html For registration: http://irgo.otago.ac.nz/registration.html Please feel free to forward to any interested colleagues. CfP: PRism special issue - Online social networks, communication practice, and public relations
by Erika Pearson 05 Aug '09

05 Aug '09

Call for Papers: Online social networks, communication practice, and public relations The social networking emerging online is now seen as one of the defining characteristics of Web 2.0 and beyond. From virtual worlds to microblogging, individuals and groups are forming diverse and sometimes apparently novel ways of building and maintaining social bonds. These mediated exchanges between individuals and groups who may never physically meet challenge our current understandings of friendship, communication, and belonging. For communication and public relations scholars and practitioners, such interactions pose a number of significant questions. How do researchers explore the nebulous social connections people forge in online spaces? How do we re-evaluate what it means to be an individual and part of a group in this context? Do these new channels of communication change the way we present ourselves and our ideas? This special 2010 edition of PRism online public relations and communication journal (http://praxis.massey.ac.nz/prism_on-line_journ.html ) seeks papers which discuss and explore ways in which to approach, study, and account for the diversity of online social experience, particularly in regard to communication practice and issues of public relations. Possible topics include: * methodological frameworks for studying online social behaviours * theory building (normative or critical) regarding the social web as part of communications or public relations practice * ways of conceptualizing the online self and society, such as; performance, identity, network theory, and their implications for organisational communication and public relations * issues and ethics in online data collection on social networking sites * case studies exploring the impact of multimodal (online/ offline) social ties in research * opinion pieces on using social networks in public relations * critically informed speculation on the future of communication practice in social media (beyond ‘Web3’) * multimedia submissions on a related topic Papers are welcome from all disciplinary areas. Full papers will be due by Friday 5th of February, 2009 and will be peer reviewed. Academic papers should be 5,000 words and practitioner papers between 2,500-3,000 words maximum. Style should follow house guidelines:http://praxis.massey.ac.nz/fileadmin/Praxis/Files/Journal_Files/Prism_House_Style.pdf See also the PRism submission guidelines at:http://praxis.massey.ac.nz/sub_guide.html Enquiries are welcome and should be directed to Erika Pearson (erika.pearson(a)otago.ac.nz ). Erika Pearson Department of Media, Film and Communication University of Otago PO Box 56 Dunedin 9054 New Zealand Ph: 64 3 479 8680 Fax: 64 3 479 3932 PS In celebration of this upcoming special issue on social media, PRism is now on Twitter... see http://twitter.com/prism_journal You can sign up there for RSS feed so that whenever we load an article or review to the journal you’ll get a brief (140-character) message explaining what’s new.
