Internet use and social trust?
by Mia Lövheim 12 Feb '09

12 Feb '09

Dear all, I have been involved in the planning of a Swedish survey looking at motives for voluntary work and social trust (generally), and would like to include some questions on uses of the internet in relation to the development of social trust, social capital, and participation in voluntary work that has been tried out previously in international research during the last 2-3 years. Any suggestions of questions and/or publication where I can find this kind of research questions would be most helpful! Thank you in advance for your help, /Mia -- Mia Lövheim TD Lektor i Religionssociologi Teologiska institutionen, Uppsala universitet Box 511 75120 Uppsala tel (+46)018-471 2168 mail mia.lovheim(a)teol.uu.se www.teol.uu.se Mia Lövheim PhD Post Doc/visiting researcher Department of Media and Communication P.O. Re: [Air-L] Does Comm Sci notice the internet?

A colleague forwarded a portion of a thread of a recent air-l discussion regarding frequency of Internet-related publication in journals of the communication discipline. I'm just hopping on air-l long enough to send this along as I thought possibly the numbers below might be relevant in the context of this issue. Apologies if they're off point. The table that follows is a list of the number of papers each communication journal has ever published that were coded with keywords "cmc" or "web", or "internet" for 29 of the 100+ communication journals covered in ComAbstracts. This 29 journal subset was selected because these happened to strike me yesterday morning as having greater face-relevance to the question of which outlets are handling the greater flow of Internet-related research papers in the communication field. The number in parentheses following the journal name is the prestige rank of each journal (lower number, higher prestige) based on the correlation between communication doctoral program faculty's accumulated record of publication in each journal and the program's accumulated prestige/reputation rankings summed across the nine areas covered in the 2004 NCA study of doctoral program reputation. Journals without rankings had summed correlations at or below zero with perceptions of doctoral program prestige/reputation. Data are from ComAbstracts, ComVista, and ComAnalytics (http://www.cios.org/www/abstract.htm) Best wishes, Tim Stephen Department of Communication, University at Albany (SUNY) & CIOS n of papers|Journal Name (journal prestige rank) 310 | Journal of Computer Mediated Communication (not rated) 146 | Information Communication & Society (53) 134 | Electronic Journal of Communication (47) 67 | Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly (28) 58 | Canadian Journal of Communication (43) 52 | Convergence 51 | Journal of Communication (2) 47 | Communication Research (5) 35 | Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media (30) 27 | Political Communication (12) 26 | Human Communication Research (1) 25 | Critical Studies in Media Communication (20) 23 | European Journal of Communication 22 | Asian Journal of Communication (37) 20 | Public Opinion Quarterly (46) 16 | Media Psychology 15 | Mass Communication and Society (41) 14 | Communication Yearbook (4) 14 | Communication Quarterly (11) 12 | Management Communication Quarterly (16) 11 | Southern Communication Journal (44) 10 | Communication Monographs (3) 10 | Western Communication Journal (7) 9 | Journal of Applied Communication (6) 9 | Television and New Media (29) 8 | Nordicom Review (not rated) 5 | Visual Communication 3 | Communication Theory (18) 1 | Quarterly Journal of Speech (14)

Automated analysis of large social network
by Luca Rossi 12 Feb '09

12 Feb '09

Dear all, I'm working on a research project aimed to develop a software tool able to map and analyze how social relations are reshaped on Facebook. I was wondering if you were aware of any paper or book about large social network analysis (preferably automated). I'm not thinking about small scale SN analysis but about large (or very large) SN. At the same time are you aware of any research based on the analysis of large quantities of User generated contents? (blog entries or youtube videos etc.). thank you all Luca -- Luca Rossi LaRiCA - Advanced Communication Laboratory Faculty of Sociology - "Carlo Bo" University, Urbino luca.rossi(a)soc.uniurb.it T. +39 0722 305726 F. +39 0722 305727 http://larica-virtual.soc.uniurb.it/redline

Re: [Air-L] Broadband speeds: demand for 10 Mbps and above
by Catherine Middleton 11 Feb '09

11 Feb '09

Amon asks: "what should be the justifiable bb speed targets to households for countries, like Canada, US, UK?" (full message quoted below) This is an important and unresolved question. The need for higher speeds is very commonly simply stated or assumed, without any specific justification. In theory, faster speeds are better, but in practice, at least in the short term, faster speeds from an ISP to a residence don't mean that content necessarily travels much faster. Additionally, it's well-known that speeds of "up to XX Mbps" rarely deliver the potential maximum speeds. (see the "UK Broadband Speeds 2008" report on this point). Regarding justification of the need for speed: - The California Broadband Task Force report does include a specific list matching applications to required network speeds: California Broadband Task Force (2008). The State of Connectivity – Building Innovation Through Broadband: State of California. http://www.calink.ca.gov/pdf/CBTF_FINAL_Report.pdf . - Similar information is also found in International Telecommunication Union (2003). Birth of Broadband. Geneva: ITU. - Another report that addresses the issue of demand for higher speed networks is: Broadband Stakeholder Group (2007). Pipe Dreams?: Prospects for next generation broadband deployment in the UK, www.broadbanduk.org/content/view/236/7/ - The issue of network symmetry (i.e. equivalent, or near equivalent upload and download speeds) is very important in a world where users generate content. The Australian case: In Australia, the National Broadband Network tender requested proposals for a 12 Mbps network. There doesn't appear to be any specific rationale for that particular speed, and many stakeholders argued for the need for much higher speeds in public consultations on the NBN. (see http://www.dbcde.gov.au/communications_for_business/funding_programs__and__… and http://www.aph.gov.au/Senate/committee/broadband_ctte/submissions/sublist.h…) In Australian cities, commercial ISPs will provide many consumers with speeds better than 12 Mbps well before the NBN is built (if it is built). In the short term, the primary reason for higher speeds is to deliver (i.e. broadcast) television services and other entertainment content. But despite the experiences of most people on this list, the average internet user isn't yet using the internet to download (or upload) much content. Canadian data continue to show that a large proportion of internet users, although they have broadband, don't really use the internet that intensely, or for applications that really require high speed. (See various papers on this topic at http://www.broadbandresearch.ca/ourresearch/papers.html , especially my work with Jordan Leith in the 'Working Papers' section of the site. We are currently working on a paper using 2007 data.) So while most people think they'd like higher speeds, actual usage data doesn't (yet?) suggest that everyone requires higher speeds to support the applications they are using. This of course raises the perennial 'build it and they will come' issue, the argument that if we had higher speed networks there would be more apps that took advantage of all this bandwidth, and people would find uses for it. I do think that in the longer term, more interesting and potentially useful things are possible, but there are enormous unresolved questions about how to build next generation networks that could provide for innovative health, education, government and other applications. Does Comm Sci notice the internet?
by Barry Wellman 11 Feb '09

A provocative Q, to be sure, and of course, the answer to members of this list is Yes. BUT I just went thru the entire "intersections" (with other disciplines) issue of the J of Communication (54, 4, 12/08) and didn't notice one mention of the Internet, or the new media in general. Perhaps I missed some obscure thing, but I wuz amazed. Having started this, please excuse me if i don't respond personally. Deadlined on my book chapter NOW. Re: [Air-L] Virtual Ethnography and CyberAnthropology
by Denise N. Rall 11 Feb '09

11 Feb '09

Dear AIR-ers - This continues as one of the best topics in AIR in recent years (for me, anyway). I forgot to mention two people who influenced the approach I took in my thesis. Such as the one offered by Phil Howard: (In fact I have thanked him personally with 'saving' my thesis - all credit to him and no blame!) Howard, P. N. (2002). "Network ethnography and the hypermedia organization: new media, new organizations, new methods." New Media & Society 4(4): 550-74. >From his paper: "Social scientists are increasingly interested in innovative organizational forms made possible with new media, known as epistemic communities, knowledge networks, or communities of practice, depending on the discipline. Some organizational forms can be difficult to study qualitatively because human, social, cultural, or symbolic capital is transmitted over significant distances with technologies that do not carry the full range of human expression that an ethnographer or participant observer hopes to experience. Whereas qualitative methods render rich description of human interaction, they can be unwieldy for studying complex formal and informal organizations that operate over great distances and through new media. Whereas social network analysis renders an overarching sketch of interaction, it will fail to capture detail on incommensurate yet meaningful relationships. Using social network analysis to justify case selection for ethnography, I propose 'network ethnography' as a synergistic research design for the study of the organizational forms built around new media." Second great approach was provided by Jo Tacchi, Greg Hearn, and their team. This is specifically a method, and while I haven't read the book, what I know of Tacchi and her colleagues, it's an approach well worth considering if one is framing the research towards action research. Tacchi, J., G. Hearn, et al. (2004). Ethnographic Action Research: A Method for Implementing and Evaluating New Media Technologies. Information and Communication Technology: Recasting Development. K. Prasad. Delhi, BR Publishing Corporation. Apologies if these have been mentioned previously, I haven't read the whole string yet. Denise N. Rall, PhD.
