Apologies for Cross-posting ++++++++++++++++++++++ 4th International Conference on e-Social Science Manchester, June 18th-20th, 2008 Call for Submissions (further deadline extension - 11th February 2008) The aim of the conference on e-Social Science is to bring together leading international representatives of the social science, e-Infrastructure/cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities in order to improve mutual awareness, harmonize understanding and instigate coordinated activities to accelerate research, development and deployment of powerful, new research methods and tools for the social sciences and beyond. We invite contributions from members of the social science, e-Infrastructure/cyberinfrastructure and e-Research communities with experience of, or interests in: 1) exploring, developing, and applying new methods, practices, and tools afforded by new infrastructure technologies - such as the Grid and Web 2.0 - in order to further social science research; and 2) studying issues impacting on the wider take-up of e-Research. Submission categories include: full and short papers, posters, demos, workshops, tutorials and panels. Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to, the following: * Case studies of the application of e-Social Science research methods to substantive social science problems * Case studies of (e-)Research and (e-)Social Science research practices, including benefits and challenges of collaboration (both small and large scale) across disciplinary and geographical boundaries * Advances in tools and techniques for quantitative and qualitative e-Social * Science, including statistical analysis, simulation, data mining, text mining, social network analysis and collaborative environments Infrastructure and services for e-Social Science, including data collection, discovery, sharing and integration, standards for metadata, ontologies, annotation, curation * Enabling new sources and forms of sociological data through e-Social Science, including ethical issues and challenges in the collection, integration, sharing and analysis of sociological and other personal data * The e-Research technical roadmap, including grids, web 2.0 and their future (co-evolution) * Socio-technical issues in the development of e-Research, including usability challenges for the design of research tools and middleware, factors influencing the wider adoption and sustainability of e-Infrastructure Submission Guidelines To submit a paper, workshop, panel or demo, you must first register at the submission website (http://www.conftool.net/ncess2008/) and then follow the instructions. Please indicate the category of your submission: full paper, short paper, poster, workshop, panel or demo and include the contact details of the main author on a separate sheet. Demo submissions should include a statement of technical requirements. Authors of papers (full and short) and posters are requested to submit an abstract of approximately 1000-1500 words. Workshop, demo, tutorial and panel organisers are requested to submit a one page outline of the topic, format, likely audience, special requirements. Submissions will be subject to independent review and a final decision will be made by the conference programme committee. Authors of submissions not accepted as full papers may be invited to submit a short paper or poster instead. Paper authors will be informed of the programme committees decision during the week commencing 17th March, 2008. Accepted full and short papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Templates for the camera-ready copies of full and short papers are available from the conference website (http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/conference/call/) Workshop, panel, poster and demo authors will be informed of the programme committee's decision on 4th April 2008. Hi everyone, I am working on a paper linking e-recruiting & social networks, it's about transforming "classical exchange-based job boards" into "career communities" based on niche e-recruiting, shared social identity of a group of users so as to keep users in the long run instead of a quick job search. Three weeks left to apply for OII's Web Science Summer Doctoral Programme

Dear colleagues, As February approaches there are just three weeks left for PhD students to apply for a place on this year's Oxford Internet Summer Doctoral Programme. The 2008 Programme will run from 13th-26th July and will focus on the theme of Web Science in collaboration with partners at the Web Science Research Initiative established by Sir Tim Berners Lee at the University of Southampton and MIT. We are also very grateful for the continued support of friends and colleagues at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the Annenberg Schools at USC and University of Pennsylvania who will provide faculty and/or fund some students. We are particularly keen to attract excellent PhD students who are already embracing the challenges of undertaking multi- or cross-disciplinary work on issues relating to the Internet or Web. Up to 25 students will have the opportunity to advance their theses as well as participating in classes and seminars led by high-profile faculty from across the social sciences, computing sciences and engineering. AoIR Copenhagen - Need participants for roundtable panel on crowdsourcing

Hello everyone, I'm putting together a proposal for AoIR Copenhagen to do a roundtable discussion panel on the topic of crowdsourcing (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdsourcing) So far, I have rounded up three of us to form a panel, but would ideally like to add one or two more people to this discussion if possible. I know there are very few people specifically studying crowdsourcing, but if you are researching various aspects of any of the exemplar cases of crowdsourcing (e.g., Threadless, iStockphoto, InnoCentive, user-generated advertising contests) or if you are researching issues of digital labor, open source production, Web 2.0, or other related issues, I'd love to hear from you. Since it's a roundtable panel, I'm putting together the narrative proposal, so if you're interested all I need from you is a) your name/institution/contact information and b) a few sentences about what you're researching that is related to crowdsourcing. Two New Lectureships in Politics and IR at Royal Holloway, University of London

Apologies for cross-posting.] Lecturer in International Relations Lecturer in Politics The Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, invites applications for the above newly-created posts, tenable from 1 September 2008. The Department was founded in August 2004 and has quickly established its research base in cutting-edge areas of the discipline, focused upon three new research centres: the Centre for European Politics, the Centre for Global and Transnational Politics, and the New Political Communication Unit. These posts mark the next phase of our expansion. Royal Holloway is one of the major Colleges of the federal University of London and is among the elite group of ten university institutions whose departments all hold the top three ratings for research, with scores of 4, 5 and 5*. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a strong research driven approach to their academic activity in general, including to their teaching. The successful candidates for both posts will be expected to make a significant contribution to the delivery of the Department's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and to undertake supervision of doctoral students. The appointees will play a full and active role in the development of this busy and intellectually vibrant Department. For the Lectureship in IR we have particular interests in candidates working in one or more of the following areas: global governance; international organisations; security studies. However, strong candidates in any area of IR are also encouraged to apply.
