Paraki, Telemedicine Research Laboratory Introduction Telemedicine is intertwined with Internet, Semantic Web and Data mining. Internet is a phenomenon that supports evolution of both Semantic Web and Telemedicine. While Telemedicine is best understood by medical professionals it is common knowledge that Internet is accessed by almost everyone with flair for English language. Telemedicine lies far beyond Internet itself and suffers from lack of global technology standards and profuse applications, which would make it a household name like Google or Yahoo. Herein lies the significance of the Semantic Web. A technology interface or enabler that can rapidly develop simple and efficient applications for telemedicine is urgently required. This is the area from which new innovations are likely to emerge within the next 2-3 years. The Handbook of Research on Knowledge Management in Telemedicine: Advanced Ethics, Policy and Regulatory Applications covers a wide range of topics from early adopters of Telemedicine to the latest innovation and futuristic tele-robotic technologies. The Overall Objective of the Book In the fields of Knowledge Management in Telemedicine and associated fields of Datamining and Biomedical Ontology, there exists a need for an edited collection of articles in this area. Call for chapters (Deadline for abstracts: 1.3.2008) ***************************************************************** New technologies of the self, mobilities and (co-)construction of identity Edited by: Fred Dervin, Senior Lecturer, Department of French Studies, University of Turku, Finland (e-mail: freder(a)utu.fi) & Yasmine Abbas, Doctor of Design, Harvard, USA ReD Associates, Denmark (e-mail: abbas.yasmine(a)gmail.com) Overall objectives of the book The new interpersonal spaces created by web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies seem to correspond to the technologies of the self that Michel Foucault (1988) has addressed in his lectures at the Collège de France at the beginning of the 1980s. These new technologies enable the individual¹s self to emerge publicly and to be worked upon with its "disciples": be they companions in Second Life, readers (for example on a blog) or listeners (Podcasts). With high speed Internet access and increasingly generous capacities of storage (mp3, USB keys, iPhone, portable computers...), the opportunities for staging the self have become unlimited. The authors will explore aspects of the contributions of these new technologies to the expression and (co-)construction of identitie(s) of mobile individuals (physical and/or digital; short-term (expatriates, businessmen, trainees, exchange students) and long-term (migrants, refugees, exiles); inter-/intra- and/or transnational mobilities). Any of the following issues can be addressed: - The specificities of (co-)constructions of the self through new technologies. How do they contribute to presenting the self? - The potential differences between these technologies of the self and more « traditional » ones. - What is said about the self? How? How is it constructed or staged? With whom? For whom? And why? - Are there signs of manipulation of the self and identity collages? - What myths related to identity seem to emerge? - The position of the (real/fictive) interlocutor(s) and groups (cf. peg-communities, Z. Bauman) in these constructions. - How is the other constructed? - What do visitors, readers, spectators or listeners seem to gain in terms of reflections on their own identities? - Problems in using but also researching the new technologies of the self (ethics, psychological effects, in terms of relationships, interculturality). Submission procedure Researchers and practitioners (from linguistics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, education, IT) are invited to submit a proposal (350 words) clearly explaining the mission, concerns of their proposed chapter as well as a short description of the corpus (if they plan on using one), the method of analysis and a basic bibliography by March 1, 2008 to freder(a)utu.fi & abbas.yasmine(a)gmail.com. The proposal can be in English or French. The followings will also be provided with the proposal: Name(s), affiliation, a few lines about the author(s), and a list of major publications. Panel on the role of photos in current netculture for next AOIR consider submitting

Hi All Im planning a panel for the next AOIR about photo blogging, photo sharing and the role of photographs within current netculture. I think it would be interesting to group together people working with different aspects of photography and photos. There will be no limitations to specific media platforms, so things like MMS or how the presence of camera phones are reshaping the public and the private spheres offline, are also very welcome. Research on the role of photos on Facebook, Myspace, blogs, and even old school personal homepages, is also much welcome. So do not only think Flickr! Research relating to broader issues such as citizen journalism would also be interesting. I will write a panel suggestion in the beginning of January, but please get in contact as soon as possible if you would like to present in this panel. You can contact me at smork(a)itu.dk. Welcome to Copenhagen for the AoIR 2008 conference!

Dear list-members, Now that the Call for Papers for the AoIR 2008 conference: Internet Research 9.0: Rethinking community, Rethinking Place should have been posted to the list. I will use this opportunity to, as the local conference chair and on behalf of the local organising committee, extend a warm welcome all to the 2008 conference. The conference will physically take place at my home university, the IT University of Copenhagen (www.itu.dk) and it is organised in conjunction with the University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Humanities, which lives right next door. Even though it will be a longish travel for some of you, I hope that many of you will be able to make it to Copenhagen to take part in the event. When sunny weather (which it will of course be!), Scandinavian autumn can still in the month of October be very beautiful - with temperatures around 10 degree celcius, and Copenhagen is a safe, modern small-scale metropolis which offers a huge variety of cultural experiences and excellent opportunities to shop both traditional and up-coming Scandinavian Design. A version 1.0 of the conference website is also finally available at http//:conferences.aoir.org and here you can find some basic information about Copenhagen, the venue, travel and accommodation (fyi, we have now negotiated some good hotel deals, that you should partake of!). Now, as mobile and location-based technologies are reintroducing "place" as an important aspect in the formation of communal and social activities, it is time to consider and rethink the concept of online or virtual communities. Not forgetting the lessons we have learned from studying the early virtual communities, how do we describe, analyse, theorise and design the communities and social formations of the early 21st century? How do we address the blurring of boundaries between places and communities on- and offline? We call for papers, panel proposals, and presentations from any discipline, methodology, and community, and from conjunctions of multiple disciplines, methodologies and academic communities that address the conference themes. Sessions at the conference will be established that specifically address the conference themes, and we welcome innovative, exciting, and unexpected takes on those themes. We also welcome submissions on topics that address social, cultural, political, economic, and/or aesthetic aspects of the Internet beyond the conference themes. In all cases, we welcome disciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions as well as international collaborations from both AoIR and non-AoIR members. SUBMISSIONS We seek proposals for several different kinds of contributions. We welcome proposals for traditional academic conference papers, but we also encourage proposals for creative or aesthetic presentations that are distinct from a traditional written paper. We also welcome proposals for ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS that will focus on discussion and interaction among conference delegates, as well as organized PANEL PROPOSALS that present a coherent group of papers on a single theme. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS All papers and presentations in this session will be reviewed in the normal manner. Any student paper is eligible for consideration for the AoIR graduate student award. Students wishing to be a candidate for the Student Award must send a final paper by June 30, 2007. Ph.D. students will also want to consider participating in the Doctoral Colloquium: Following the very successful examples of previous Doctoral Colloquia, we will again aim to offer an all-day Doctoral Colloquium on October 15th 2008 (Wednesday) for Ph.D. students who wish to present their current work for critical evaluation by their peers and senior scholars. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS Prior to the conference, there will be a limited number of pre-conference workshops which will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-conference workshops. Local presenters are encouraged to propose workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or studios or locales. Proposals should be no more than 1000 words, and should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs, equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining its relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. These proposals and all inquiries regarding pre-conference proposals should be submitted as soon as possible to both the Conference Chair and Program Chair and no later than March 31, 2007.
