AoIR and Facebook

I think we've had quite the little Facebook experience with AoIR this last week. During the conference there was a tremendous amount of after-hours (and no doubt during-hours) friending going on as people met one another then rushed to FB to friend one another. People used status reports to comment on panels and coordinate with one another. In the days since Vancouver there's been a huge amount of status reports about getting home, rain or the absence thereof, continued post-conference friending, laughing over shared photos (especially those taken at the banquet of everyone in Canada hats!), etc. Seems to me there's been a hearty effort to continue the camaraderie of the conf via Facebook in ways I half-heartedly described as diasporic this morning -- the conference is repeatedly described as a "home" and, once apart, Facebook seems to be the venue of choice for keeping the social dimensions of those connections active. Meanwhile, and surely relatedly, the AoIR facebook group just topped 800 members. On another note, this marks the first time since the dawn of AoIR that I have not been on its executive committee and I just want to say many thanks to everyone who's kept this association going. To see the scholarly collaborations, friendships, and even marriages (I know of 3) that have come out of AoIR is incredibly rewarding. I know we're in good hands with the new exec. Thank you thank you thank you for making a dream into a reality. And thanks for the champagne too, much appreciated :-) Nancy

Representations of spirituality in digital culture

Greetings all! I am new to the Association of Internet Researchers and this listserv. I am already finding many useful insights and resources! Also being new to life after doctoral studies, I am now hoping to become active in research related to digital culture. As it stands, three general areas are of particular interest: 1) Representations of spirituality in virtual worlds 2) Ethnographic research on online religious communities 3) Formation of personal convictions in online environments and transfer (or lack thereof) to face-to-face environments I am hoping to identify individuals who have similar interests as well as current research projects that relate to one or more of these areas. Basically in reply to the posts suggesting that we should drop the string discussing David Watson's allegedly racist comments, I just wanted to note a couple of things. First, since I started the discussion, I don't feel like I should let this go without saying something. Second, and the main thing I wanted to say now: please recall that I did note that Watson had made a retraction, so that, in part, in large part, I thought the remainder of the discussion would be anti-racist comments and scientific examination of things related. I.e., not continuing naming. Finally, if the consensus is to stop talking about it, I'd just like to note that with anyone interested in exporing the last post of mine, I'd be hapypy to do so offlist. It is, as I obviously feel and as someone (sorry not to remember the name) suggested, not uninteresting. Finallly finally, it certainly wasn't my intention and isn't now to offend or go after anyone. I admire the work of the people I was answering, some of whom have put up info on internet research, software, philosophy and stuff that has helmeped my own work quite a lot. I was going to go on here and say something about "the type of criticism I do" etc etc, but I've lost my notes and anyway I said a couple of things. In the interest of democracy.
