[AoIR8] The great badge caper begins...

Dear AIRfolk, Kris Markman has thrown down the gauntlet and volunteered his dozen badges to the cause of "greening" the event. So who else is up for it? As I mentioned, I am contributing my 15 badge holders (why do we never throw these out?). Mia Consalvo - gamer that she is - immediately jumped to the idea that we should have prizes and a contest for the best/most badge holders. I'll leave that up to your imagination, but if you are game (ahem), I'll do that, too. Anyway, if you want to take part, here's what you do: 1. Gather up all your old badges from previous conferences (whatever style/form you want, you don't have to rinse them out, either) 2. Put them in an envelope and send them to me: Richard Smith SFU Vancouver Suite 3574, 515 West Hastings Street Vancouver BC V6B 5K3 CANADA 3. I will collect them up, sort them, clean them, fix the strings, and keep track of the truly exceptional contributions (and, if Mia gets her way, we'll have prizes at the banquet), and ensure that they are ready for re-use at the conference. Remember, reuse is the best way to reduce our impact on the environment. The following was submitted to the AoIR executive as a report from a subcommittee addressing publishing issues for AoIR. Future editorship will be for a 3 year, renewable post, to be decided and confirmed by ICS and the AoIR executive. Papers are selected in the following way: the AoIR chair selects 25-30 abstracts for consideration. The special issue editors review these and choose a limited set (around 10) to be invited to write a full length paper, due approximately 6 weeks before the conference (Sept. 1st for 2007, dates will be adjusted according to the date of the conference each year). Editors will provide feedback and select the final 7-8 papers for the special issue (exact number of papers on ICS editors and page limits for an ICS journal issue). Those authors will have until 2 weeks after the conference to submit revised versions. Papers that are acceptable but delayed and/or exceed the number ICS can publish will be accommodated in a later issue. > >3. [AoIR] Financial Report 2006 - impo

Dear friends and colleagues, This is Monica Murero, the Aoir Treasurer. Tax information time at Aoir ...I have completed the 2006 Annual Report. The Annual Report is the most important legal and financial document of the association. It measures aoir's financial ...health . In 2006 Aoir has significantly improved its financial position. Since I have started my mandate, balance has increased of 68% . In 2006 I have reviewed the membership system. The combination of conference fees+ membership dues we introduced for the first time in Brisbane has proved to be a good solution, and we will proceed in this direction. Moreover, most 2006 expiring AoIR members are receiving a "free extension" of their membership as we speak ! In Brisbane, savings on expenses and sponsors helped generate a profit, and therefore our thank you goes to all of you who have helped reach this result, particularly to Axel. In the next weeks I will send to the Air-exec a few political proposals of investments for discussion. I will present the next Financial Report summary at the Aoir General Meeting in Vancouver, next October. Finally, I'd like to thank Steve Jones who has filled IRS tax information forms for us ... the funniest part of the job : -) Monica Murero Treasurer, AoIR

Due to the response, I have decided to create an anonymous online survey with a box to permit personal contact. The survey data will be used accordingly (quantitative) and only those people who give express permission will be contacted for a qualitative perspective. Hi Christine, True, perhaps, but a number of people have suggested quite a few alternatives as well, which they also use. So I guess we can pick other words, if we choose to, particularly if the given word doesn't entirely fit the activity we are describing. I don't doubt that there are some people who really do lurk in the non-Internet sense of the term (hide in the shadows, often with malevolent intent), but perhaps we can be critical of conventional terminology and the assumptions underlying it, as well. Or perhaps those of us with gut reactions to the term can get over it. I personally don't use the word, and likely wouldn't to talk about most of the phenomena it seems to be describing (hey, I did read the Wikipedia page), but I guess that mainly marks me as an outsider uncomfortable with the native language. Why create a new jargon term, when one already exists? ;) I don't really know if lurking *is* considered a bad thing... maybe frustrating in channels that were once highly active and now are not, therefore needing a desperate infusion of new ideas and new blood... but I'd rather see someone lurk for a while and then participate (like me. hi!), instead of jumping in with both feet not knowing how things are done and causing an uproar that can upset the flow of discussions. If you have any pointers on a good carbon impact calculator, I'd be interested in hearing about it. ...r

These seminars are the result of ongoing research collaboration between LSE and EDS, focusing on themes of public policy, technology, productivity, communications, and facilitation. This seminar tackles key issues in the field of health care technologies from two different vantage points. In the case of telecare programmes, there are questions about the evidence base for decision making and about which stakeholders can have a say in the implementation of technologies and services. In the case of Internet-based support networks, the evidence about motivations for use of the network gathered from patients calls into question many of the assumptions often made by those who design health care support systems using new technologies. Professor James Barlow and Dr Jane Hendy will present on Evidence, adoption and diffusion: The UK's emerging telecare programme. The presentation explores the role of 'evidence' in influencing decisions about whether to adopt 'telecare', drawing on research they are conducting on the government's £150m implementation programme. Dr Shani Orgad will then present on Patients' Experience of Internet Environments: Storytelling, Empowerment and Its Limitations. This presentation will consider the kinds of processes of communication that Internet users who have concerns about health issues engage in. It draws on research which focused on the online participation of breast cancer patients in Internet spaces and will discuss the experiences of a broader range of patients and their experience of medical websites.
