My students and I at American University did a study in 2004-2005 of college-student multitasking while using IM. Two of the authors (Tim Clem and Brian Rabinovitz) presented the data at AOIR last year in Chicago. I've incorporated some of the data into a book chapter I've written, called "Adjusting the Volume: The Impact of Technology and Multitasking on Discourse Control". defending yourself online vs. offline research

Ulla, I recall a psychologist presenting experimental evidence at a conference at Miami University about three people with two confederates, passing a ball or "ball" to each other. The confederates would purposely leave the subject out of the ball tossing, only passing it to the subject every once in a while. His research showed that online people defended themselves more whereas offline they were more embarrassed to speak up. Online the subjects often wrote protests of their treatment or they at least questioned it. Beth Uhler of Miami U may recall who was on the program for their last conference to identify the author of that research or someone else who was there may recall. cheers, andrea

timeline: TRS 80

Jeremy DePauw says he is really interested in Journalists' use over time. Am I the only one old enuf to remember the TRS-80 from Radio Shack, known as the Trash-80. It had a screen of only a few lines, but a full keyboard, and was small and lite to carry. Smaller than a current ultra-portable. All 4 of my journalist friends of those days (mid-1990s?) carried them. I'm sure a little surfing will find more. "Wikipedia" style published book

FYI: Interesting news about MIT's planned attempt to publish a "Wikipedia" style collaboratively written scholarly book. I think the more fascinating story is the initial varying reaction of the media headlines from "MIT Opens Junk Science Institute" to "MIT Looks to Give 'Group Think' A Good Name" ====================================================================== MIT Invests in Collective Research Today administrators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology unveiled the Center for Collective Intelligence <http://cci.mit.edu/>, a program that would use technology and what officials describe as "large numbers of people" to solve business, scientific, and societal problems. The center's director, Thomas W. Malone, cited Google and Wikipedia as inspiration for the center. He said the basic research question there would be "How can people and computers be connected so that, collectively, they act more intelligently than any individuals, groups, or computers have ever done before?" One of the center's first projects will be a Wikipedia-style business book about the effects of social networks on business operations. The SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Pearson Publishing will also be involved. Just saw an interesting article that made me smile and look quite old. SK Teens: E-Mail Is For Old People Excerpts: For some schools, the correct answer is: set up a MySpace page. After all, there's nothing hipper for students than being "friends" with your college registrar or school principal. defending yourself online vs. offline research

The posts on trolling and whether it's taking place and who is the troll or not has made me wonder about something. My personal experience says that someone accused of something they perceive as negative (whether it's trolling, lying, stealing, cheating, aggressiveness, or anything else so long as you personally feel it's negative and unjustified) usually tends to feel the urge to defend him or herself. Different people experience this urge to different degrees. Some can "swallow" more than others and rather not drag out the unpleasantness by talking about it, even if they stand wrongly accused in their own perspective. Others will fight back and go to extremes to clear their name. Most of us fall somewhere in between. Here my question: Is there research that looks at how the interaction medium affects such behavior? Meaning, are we more or less likely to tend towards one of the two extremes described above because we're interacting online as opposed to offline? I know there is research on flaming (both the early one that said there's more flaming online than offline, and the later one that mitigated that statement somewhat). There is the hyperpersonal model on social anxiety being reduced online. But is there research that looks at whether we're more or less likely to defend ourselves online as opposed to offline?
