CFP: Flow Conference 2006 The Flow Conference (Oct. 26 -29, 2006; Austin, TX) -- a series of roundtable discussions with topics created by Flow columnists organized around the future of television and media culture -- is now accepting submissions to join a roundtable. Deadline for submission is: June 15, 2006. The goal of the Flow Conference is conversation. There are no plenary sessions, and participants are asked to submit short position papers (not full-length essays). We want to promote discussion amongst scholars, members of the media industries, media activists, fans, and policy-makers over crucial issues related to television and media. I worked for a few weeks on the original popcultures project (in the 90's), before i ran out of time. It is an interesting resource and worth supporting. Hi Ben, I too am at Columbia. If in your search you are interested in the history of the retrieval question and its possible future, you might find the article, Libraries of the Future 1945-1965 interesting reading. You can see it at: http://www.columbia.edu/~hauben/libraries-of-future.doc It looks at the visions of Vannevar Bush, John Kemeny and JCR Licklider asking the question, how can the whole corpus of knowledge be accessed returning the highest possible degree of relevancy. All three of the visions included considering how the human brain works. Licklider's answer in 1962 was the search had to be more semantic than syntactic. More recent work is cited especially that of Bruce Schatz, e.g., "Information Retrieval in Digital Libraries: Bringing Search to the Net". In: Science (Washington, DC). 275 (1997) 17. 327-334. Internet Addiction research

Anyone researching/critiquing this areas may wish to respond to a Reuters story today citing Diane Wieland's piece in Perspectives on Psychiatric Care, and repeating her odd misunderstandings. My own reaction (sent to PPC) is below. -eg ------------------- Dear Editor, I am disturbed by your publishing of Diane Wieland's article purporting to advance our understanding of "Internet addiction". Psychiatric nurses may play an important role in assisting those unable to cope with online interactions, whether due to unique aspects of online settings (asynchronicity, relative anonymity, etc.) or not. And observation and scholarship regarding these matters are indeed deserving of attention. Wieland, however, veers far from observation and not close enough to scholarship. She asserts that online relationships are not part of "real life", as if the former are solely imagined and wholly unimportant. She fans worry that online relationships may result in infidelity and divorce, as if any relationship in any medium could be free from temptation, and without mentioning that online relationships often generate fidelity and marriage. She portrays "interpersonal relationships" online as is they could only be "pseudo-intimate", neglecting more than a decade of research regarding love, friendship, and productive interactions online. The division she reifies, between a forboding cyberspace and a sensuous physical reality, is illusory. Weiland is not the only practitioner to ignore and even contradict long-established sociological knowledge. And I am not often a cheerleader for interdisciplinarity. But the search for psychiatric solutions will be more fruitful if it is more careful. Therapies and treatments that promote abstinence risk isolating patients socially, financially, and even therapeutically, at a time when cyberspace is becoming increasingly important for many people's health, wealth, and interpersonal well-being. There's the problem of plenty: searching search-engines produces a library of material with no card catalog. Thank you very much Alex for this important link since I am new here too. Regarding online Graffiti, David, I am writing my PhD about online Graffiti. Right now there are very few articles that relate graffiti to the internet. I am going to launch a website shortly in which graffiti will be categorized by several factors (motive will be added but will not define graffiti as a sole factor. I have dealt with defining "New Graffiti" (new media graffiti") in my masters and I will try to bring up my definitions in hoping to share it with you and with all the members of this great list.
