My book on Internet and computer spectatorship--The Body and the Screen: Theories of Internet Spectatorship--was just published by MIT Press. Many of you have contributed time and suggestions to this project and I want to thank you once again for your support. I thought that it would be of interest to some AoIR readers because I consider such things as the interface, the use of the term "user," how Internet engagements are gendered, the varied forms of Internet work, programmers' embodiment, and the issues surrounding computer "demanufacturing." In this book, I pose hybrid critical models and suggest how theories of authorship, feminist and psychoanalytic film, gender and queer studies, hypertext, television, and postcolonial and critical race studies offer ways to understand Internet sites and spectatorship. Dear AoIR-ists, I cordially invite your attention to the following - please distribute to interested colleagues and students NTNU Globalization Programme and The Norwegian Air Force Academy Invitation and Call for Papers to the Conference: Global Communication of Fundamentalist Knowledge The Norwegian University of Science and Technology December 1416 2006, Trondheim, Norway Conference website: <www.hf.ntnu.no/cofu> Fundamentalism and globalisation are two widely contested concepts. While some analysts claim that both terms refer to increasingly powerful political forces, others argue that neither refers to anything empirically real. This conference seeks to address the following questions: What distinguishes modern fundamentalism from other forms of religious revivalism and political activism? How do global media communicate ³fundamentalist knowledge²? Participants are invited to address these wider questions within the three thematic areas outlined below: 1. Community, people and state Since religious communities are constituted in contexts of peoples, states and territories, their aims and ambitions are necessarily worked out in relation to these entities. What is specific to fundamentalism in its relation to these entities? We solicit proposals addressing this question in relation to the following issues: * Concepts of power, religion and law in formations of communities and states. * Concepts of power, religion and law in territorial disputes and international relations. 2. Fundamentalism and exegesis The fundamentalist principle of ³return to scripture² is usually associated with literal readings, but it also means bypassing literal readings in order to acquire scripture¹s hidden (esoteric) knowledge and to empower ³true believers² in relation to their ³others². Proposals are solicited which analyse fundamentalist hermeneutics in relation to the following themes: * Principles of epistemic and communal authority in exegesis. * Esotericism, aestheticism and linguistics in exegesis. * Exegeses and changes in communities, societies, states, and international relations. 3. Media and fundamentalist knowledge Through global media, individuals can avail themselves of a wide range of sources, including religious websites and scriptures. Is this development changing the way religion serves ethnic and national interests? Or is it challenging ethnic and national interests and creating new forms of religious and political activism? Proposals are solicited which seek to define fundamentalism from the following perspectives: * The ways in which religious actors (whether states or trans-national networks) use global media to serve ethnic and national interests. * The ways in which non-religious actors (whether states or trans-national networks) use global media to defend ethnic and national interests against religion Keynote Speakers Robert A. overstated media inference from fine study

Re the Washington Post story below (and a similar USA Today story): To my mind, it's an interesting case of media distortion. The good news: the accounts are based on a high-quality survey (US General Social Survey) by first-class reseachers (Lynn Smith-Lovin & Miller McPherson) + Matthew Brashaers whom I don't know, in sociology's leading journal, American Sociological Review. I was a referee on this paper, btw, and revealed myself at appropriate time to the authors. The study replicates one stimulus Q from the General Social Survey 20 years ago about who do you have to discuss important matters with. It finds a mean of about 2 in 2004, down from 3 in 1984 (or was it 1985)? Here's the problem: Based on this, the 2 newspapers have created a huge social isolation spin on this, when it's well known that people have lotsa ties, not just 2 or 3. See our data from Pew Internet, Connected Lives study) + lotsa others. Indeed, altho we are not as parallel as the US GSS, comparing Connected Lives (3rd East York study, 2004) with the second East York study (1979 data) shows more active ties now, both intimate and significant ties. Thus the media spin is a huge inferential leap from a decline in the super-core ties to saying Americans are socially isolated. If you read further in the Washington Post and USA Today articles, you'll see me quoted as suggesting that we now have more ties -- and more contact with ties -- but that relationships are differentiated. In other words, the relative decline in discussion partners shouldn't be generalized to either absolute isolation or even growing isolation. The Internet Research Annual

Dear air-list Previously, AoIR has, in association with the scholarly publishers Peter Lang, published each year the Internet Research Annual, which contained selected papers drawn from AoIR conferences. Three volumes have been published and a fourth will be available later this year.
