Dear List Mates, I like to listen to classic rock on the radio: the good stuff from the 1950s through the 1970s (i.e., Bill Haley, "Rock Around the Clock" through The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction"). One day, Elvis' "Return to Sender: Address Unknown" came on. It jarred me: who sends letter mail anymore? It also resonated, because an email had just come bouncing back, marked "User Unknown". The juxtaposition flashed an "A Ha" at me, leading me to realize how much our technology and social relations have changed subtly in the past 30 years. So I decided to translate song titles into contemporary cyber times. Movies, TV, pop culture, history, etc. joined the list. Most are modern updatings. However, some are just for fun, as in 409/419 (Nigerian criminal code) and Godzilla/Mozilla. In one situation, this diversion has turned out to be useful. When Jennifer Kayahara and I were stuck for an opening to our forthcoming paper ("Searching for Leisure High and Low"), I thought of the refrain to The Coasters' "Searchin'" to represent traditional pre-Internet search behavior. I've ordered and grouped items loosely, with only main headings: just what seems to flow together. In modern parlance, this is a semi-structured list. (See _Queue_, October 2005). Contributions from others are welcome: please enter them by going to the "clicking here" spot in the site -- it's in red. Feel free to contribute items from before the 1950s, as I have done to a limited extent (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik; She'll be Coming Round the Mountain). If I resonate with them, I'll keep them. The entry form lets you decide if you want to be credited or remain anonymous. Warning: this can become addictive -- do not attempt while driving or trying to meet deadlines. Google's new search pattern tool...

Hello all, maybe many of you know this google tool already, but for those who don't, I think it is pretty interesting. They named it Zeitgeist ("Etymology: German, from Zeit (time) + Geist (spirit) | Date: 1884 | Meaning: the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era"): http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html Basically it gives you the most popular queries by week/month, highlighting searching trends. There is also the possibility to search specific trends between countries to note cultural differences if any: http://www.google.com/press/intl-zeitgeist.html. As I said, I find it very fascinating. Colorado Study

The original purpose of the Colorado Study was to identify differences that may arise from rural vs urban populations. It also was a test of the methodology. The results were a surprise to me. I offered the rough summary as a discussion point and a seeming contradiction to opinions in the discussion "Teen and Myspace. I also asked if anyone knew of current studies that reported different results. I have not found any "current" study that empirically ascribes "stigma" to an excessive level of Internet use. As the result of these findings we decided to do three more identical studies in other states. The sample was chosen from a database of 2.5 million email addresses first by state, then by age range. While gender was available it was not a selection criterion for the sample. When I stated "insignificant gender differences" I meant the results appear to be statistically insignificant based on gender. I do not pretend to know what this entire study means. We are attempting to make sense of the results, as I write. I will reveal that we did not use a 2 choice model. In most cases we used a 5 choice model. In cases when respondents were asked to indicate intervals of use we used a 7 choice model. In the 5 choice model there was a neutral position. In the 7 choice model there was a "not at all" choice. The thing that surprised me the most is the number of respondents in the sample of 2000. We built in some fairly stringent tests of internal validity and have not analyzed those results. the colorado survey

I am bemuzzled by the Colorado teen internet survey which Reid Cornwell has shared with us. Here is what he posted: "The Center For Internet Research just completed an online survey. While the results are preliminary the trends are clear and as follows: * Links to the survey form were sent via email to 2000 Colorado teens between 14 and 18 * 1,000 were in rural settings and 1,000 were urban * 1,123 people responded * 610 rural kids responded (insignificant gender differences) * 515 urban kids responded (insignificant gender differences) * All respondents reported that they participated in some sort of real-time chatting * All reported that they did so while doing other tasks (homework etc.) * All reported that they preferred this form of communication rather than telephone * All reported that they spent more time chatting online or emailing than they spent in f2f activities * All reported that they downloaded music at some time * All reported that they share music, links data, and homework with their friends * All reported that they valued technical skills of their peers and it appears that kids who help them keep their devices working had certain status * All reported that they did not perceive a peer to peer negative reaction related to computer use or skills * All reported that kids who did not use these devices were seen as odd or different. (stigma)" /END PREVIOUS POST This apparently is an internet-only population. A few questions: 1. What was the sampling frame? Was it a random sample? 2. What was the response rate? 3. And most importantly, I am immensely impressed that All of the respondents agreed in All of the items mentioned above. Even Brezhnev only had 99% or so voting for him in USSR elections in the 1980s, as I recall. What is it about Colorado teens that they agree with each other so thoroughly?
