(apologies for cross-posting) -------------------------------------------------------- Workshop CHI2006 - Call For Papers Investigating new user experience challenges in iTV: mobility & sociability -------------------------------------------------------- *Extended deadline: 9 January 2006* http://soc.kuleuven.be/com/mediac/chi2006workshop/ Position papers are invited on the design of future interactive television (iTV) scenarios characterized by pervasive communications in contexts of entertainment, work and government, with special attention to the social character of these applications and the implications for interface design. The workshop will include thematically organized moderated group discussions. Submissions are invited on the following topics: * unfolding experimental research methodologies to understand user- experience in future pervasive communication scenarios; * sharing a roadmap of feasible scenarios and representative applications for ubi-iTV; * exploring the potential of novel interfaces within pervasive communication scenarios for entertainment, work and government; * accounts of the particular challenges of studying and designing for sociability in social electronic media * understanding and supporting sociability in social electronic media * evaluating sociability This one-day workshop wants to address these issues by bringing together practitioners and researchers from different domains, but with the same concern for social interfaces on pervasive interactive television. We will select participants with diverse backgrounds based upon the relevance, insightfulness, and originality of their submissions. Submissions are expected in the form of 2-4 pages position papers, describing the area of research, specific work (empirical or theoretical) on the workshop topic and the innovative character of the research at hand. I spoke too soon! Some data is available after all. More would be welcome however as there still isn't much! Livingstone, S. M. and M. Bober (2004) "Uk Children Go Online: Surveying the Experiences of Young People and Their Parents" ESRC London. http://personal.lse.ac.uk/bober/UKCGOsurveyreport.pdf reveals that of 12-19 year old regular internet users 17% contributed to message boards (doesn't separate out 'lurkers' from 'participants' though. Survey data from Pew's first Teen and Parent survey in 2000 reveals 38% of 12-17 year olds go to “web sites and bulletin boards where they can write their opinions about things”. Unfortunately, this question disappeared from (what seems to be?) Pew's only other survey data with teens in it - in 2004. And while I think of it here are the other sources I checked unsuccessfully (but which other researchers interested in young people and Internet use may find handy): Dutton, W. Hi Mark, Jere, Kathy and others, I'm a phd student at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands and my research is about the 'musealization' of Internet art. Recently, I've written a piece which was on the Internet as heterotopia. I'm not using Foucault in relation to the Other or the Panopticum, but I'm trying to analyse the net as the actualisation of virtual relationships. That's where I bring in the heterotopia, but it's actually a rather Deleuzian point of view. Furthermore, I want to describe processes of musealization as constituting discourses of power, which is resisted by the very nature of the net. Also, I was wondering if anyone is working with Foucault's concept of heterochrony. I hope this makes sense and I would really like to discuss these matters with you all. But to the extent that Wikipedia is an infrastructure for peer-based content creation, not a frozen product with a release date, it seems to me if journalists wish to represent it more accurately they should be adding the time dimension to their descriptions. Otherwise it's a bit like announcing definitively what The Web has to say about something, isn't it? True at some particular point in time, but not a done deal. cheers Bram

In organizational settings, dead leaders are memorialized by adorning hallway and office walls with their paintings or photographs. Talk of doing the same for the avatars of the deceased? I keep a record of all online identities (i.e. email, listservers, groups, etc.) so that a loved one or friend can notify the administrators to bring closure to this part of life. It would be interesting to do a study to determine how many other people have establised what might be considered as a virtual will. How about those of you reading this posting?
