Dear Mr. Khillis, a colleague of mine is exploring in her MA Diss. the problem "fear" in movies (sequencies). If German is one of your preferred languages to read, I can look for her eMail-address and tel. All the things written by the Frankfurt School people are "pragmatically" developped theoretical prospects from prevoius writings 19./20. c. Their only advantage is a "communicative" orientation, so they offer an "interface" to the different levels of media and business management today. But if you grab deeper you'll discover much more "Basics" in Simmels or Kirkegaards, Jaspers writings and of other guys with an own way/style of thinking. If you want to explore shock and fear as phenomena you have also to look at the philosophical expertise of Kirkegaard and the sociological one of Durkheim. Durkheim has even written a monograph on self suicide. 1990 I exposed critically different points of "communication philosophy" under the aspect "How much should we go further in the develepment of "digital experience" (the only problem is, the monograph is written in Bulgarian, but I am about to go further in my communication "philosophy" writing a small article till the end of this). So I would be very interested to exchange some expertise looking for a dialogue with someone "digitally" immersed in his everyday experience. Best Karim Paper 1 Authors: MacCormack, Alan, John Rusnak & Carliss Baldwin Title: Exploring the Structure of Complex Software Designs: An Empirical Study of Open Source and Proprietary Code (updated) http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/maccormackrusnakbaldwin2.pdf Abstract: This paper reports data from a study that seeks to characterize the differences in design structure between complex software products. In particular, we use Design Structure Matrices (DSMs) to map the dependencies between the elements of a design and define metrics that allow us to compare the structures of different designs. We first use these metrics to compare the architectures of two software products – the Linux operating system and the Mozilla web browser – that were developed via contrasting modes of organization: specifically, open source versus proprietary development. We then track the evolution of Mozilla, paying particular attention to a purposeful “re-design” effort that was undertaken with the intention of making the product more “modular.” We find significant differences in structure between Linux and the first version of Mozilla, suggesting that Linux had a more modular architecture. We also find that the redesign of Mozilla resulted in an architecture that was significantly more modular than that of its predecessor, and indeed, than that of Linux. Our results, while exploratory, are consistent with a view that different modes of organization are associated with designs that possess different structures. However, we also illustrate that purposeful managerial actions can have a large impact on structure. This latter result is important given recent moves to release proprietary software into the public domain. These moves are likely to fail unless the product possesses an architecture that facilitates participation. Our paper provides evidence that a tightly-coupled design can be adapted to meet this objective. Paper 2 Author: Vetter, Greg R Title: "Infectious" Open Source Software: Spreading Incentives or Promoting Resistance? http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/vetter2.pdf Abstract Some free or open source software infects other software with its licensing terms. Free or open source software is a copyright based licensing system. It typically allows modification and distribution on conditions such as source code availability, royalty-free use and other requirements. Some licenses require distribution of modifications under the same terms. A license is infectious when it has a strong scope for the modifications provision. The scope arises from a broad conception of software derivative works. A strong infectious ambit would apply itself to modified software, and to software intermixed or coupled with non-open-source software. Popular open source software, including the GNU/Linux operating system, uses a license with this feature. This Article assesses the efficacy of broad infectious license terms to determine their incentive effects for open source and proprietary software. The analysis doubts beneficial effects. Rather, on balance, such terms may produce incentives detrimental to interoperability and coexistence between open and proprietary code. As a result, open source licensing should precisely define infectious terms in order to support open source development without countervailing effects and misaligned incentives. Paper 3 Author: Vetter, Greg R Title: The Collaborative Integrity of Open-Source Software http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/vetter1.pdf Abstract: This Article analyzes legal protection for open-source software by comparing it to the venerable civil law tradition of moral rights. The comparison focuses on the moral right of integrity, with which one may object to mutilations of her work, even after having parted with the copyright and the object that embodies the work. The parallel apparatus in open-source licensing is conditional permission to use a copyrighted work. The conditions include that source code be available and that software use be royalty-free. These conditions facilitate open-source collaborative software development. At the heart of both systems is the right for creators to control the view that a work presents. In the open-source system, this is the Collaborative Integrity of open-source software. The history and legacy of moral rights help us better understand Collaborative Integrity in open-source software. The right of integrity in some international jurisdictions may apply to software, thus raising questions whether it hurts or helps open-source software. Building from these insights, this Article evaluates whether the Collaborative Integrity in open-source software deserves protection as a separate right, just as the right of integrity developed separately from pecuniary copyright in civil law jurisdictions. To all who intend to participate in AOIR.6 in Chicago: Consider joining our pre-conference workshop on the mobile Internet Wednesday October 5 (not October 6 as it says on the registration site) from 8am to 12pm. Participation in the workshop is free if you participate in AOIR.6 and you register for the workshop when you register for the conference. Please se description below. Therefore we hope to see scholars as well as practitioners among the participants. The workshop will be open for other interested participants. Minimal number of participants is 7. Problems and potentials The workshop will explore theories and analysis and creative or technological presentations on socio-cultural aspects of the mobile Internet. We would like to invite you to the following international conference: Cyberworld unlimited? Digital Inequality and New Spaces of Informal Education for Young People International Conference February 9th -11th 2006 Bielefeld, Germany Today, the internet is regarded as the central resource for knowledge and information. Associated with this is the idea that everyone is able and even expected to serve himself or herself according to his or her own needs via this medium. Since more and more services (banks, universities, schools, public administration etc.) are delivered online the internet seems to allow its users to enjoy specific advantages in dealing with their everyday life. However, using the internet is based on a range of preconditions. New results of empirical and theoretical research indicate the rise of a social divide in this context. Within the internet, differences in ways of use can be identified alongside social inequalities. They mirror boundaries of the "real life" in the virtual space e.g. in terms of forms of communification and spaces for appropriation (in a sense of self-formation processes of social actors). These are not only shaped by invidual preferences but particularly by social structures and processes. This appears in two dimensions: by processes of social closure and by service structures which only reach special target groups - prevalently in contrary to their own intention. In the context of the broader debate on education it is stated that formal educational structures are to be urgently completed by arrangements which are structured in informal resp. nonformal ways. Particularly the internet is suggested to play a special role in this respect. However, the phenomenon of digital inequality points to limitations consolidated by effects of cultural, social and material resources: Economical resources affect opportunities of access, priorities of everyday life shape respective intentions of internet use, social relationships have an impact on the support structures available and ways of appropriation reproduce a specific understanding of informal education ("Bildung"). This produces an early stratification of opportunities especially for the subsequent generation and may lead to extensive inequalities regarding the distribution of advantages in terms of education. Thus the capacity of the virtual space in terms of participatory opportunities and democratic potentials raises concerns of major relevance with respect to social and educational policy. From the perspective of different disciplines involved in these issues it is essential to clarify this issue in empirical as well as theoretical ways and to make it utilizable for a future-orientied practice. In particular, the following questions are central for the analysis: a.. What are the impacts of technical equipment and social sites of access with respect to online participation? b.. How do social preconditions influence differences in using the internet and which are the consequences for young people's ways of use? c.. What forms of communification and specific media cultures can be observed on the internet and how do they affect informal processes of education? d.. In which ways are aspects of the "real life" and the "virtual space" related regarding the facilitation of different ways of appropriation? e.. Which preconditions are required for opening up new spaces of education for young people via the informal structure of the internet? Hi Ralph - There is a terrific Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder, http://itp.colorado.edu/ The program is designed around the conviction that students should be trained in economics, law, and policy as a complement to the technical skills they need to be successful professionals. It is a diverse program with an international student body, a very distinguished faculty, and plenty of opportunities for mentoring and internships with firms in the Denver area (Qwest, Sun, IBM, Level 3, etc.).
