As a PhD student, I understand the concern by professors about excessive online citations. However, the future of research will be just that electronic based research with electronic citations because of the economics of maintaining libraries and the costs of books, especially textbooks and research based books. This current discourse reminds me of the concerns by teachers during the 1970's when I was in grade school and parents and teachers complained about the use of calculators, and now nearly every math and science class requires excessive calculator usage because of the element of time. My point is that students should have the fundamentals of great research and practice it; however, we all need to recognize that when Google finishes its work it will simply be too easy and practical not to fully utilize electronic services. The more important key may be that students properly give credit to sources and that the sources be "approved" by the professor. re: tech competence

I suspect for new media-related courses the most important tech- related stuff to teach to all of them would be in the area of "un- learning" rather than learning. Unlearning the exaggerated assumptions many students may have about the levels of tech competence and use in the general population (using qualitative/ ethnographic studies of Internet use) on the one hand and unlearning their assumptions about the way the Internet and key services work on the other (eg a primer on how search engines deliver results deconstructing the commercial and technical decisions underlying them which would be helpful for their own web searching as well as for user understanding). P.S. References to using UNIX for anything research-related made me smile ruefully. I wasn't surprised by Ezter's remarks on this. Since we at the LSE don't have a Comp Sci department (Information Systems is social science-y not primarily tech) there's very little support for UNIX here except for an "Advanced Research Computer". Even Macs are distinctly second class citizens: "Apple Mac and Unix computers, and other machines running non School standard operating systems, are not supported other than provision of assistance on how to connect to the School’s network." (In practice, fortunately I have found several helpful IT people at the LSE who have informally aided me in connecting my Mac). There's probably plenty of UNIX around behind the scenes but nothing the ordinary student would run across. The phrase "Big Brother" has been hijacked as a title for an increasingly tacky piece of exploitation TV but the original meaning of the term is still alive. The music corporations are boasting about finding a teenage girl who has been downloading music so that the corporations can now prosecute her mother. The media report with a straight face the idea that downloading will ruin the business. (Just as video recorders ruined the business or taping music off the wireless ruined the business presumably.) There has not been a peep of protest about the invasion of the teenager's privacy by the corporations. It is OK for the corporations to know the contents of everyone's computer "for their own good" so to speak. At least they have dropped the laughable - "if you download a tune you are funding terrorism" line which was greeted with sceptical derision whenever they broadcast it. On the TV there are a series of public service adverts threatening people without licences for watching TV and threatening people who work while signing for benefit. Call for Papers Special issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication to focus on "Examining International Outsourcing: Perspectives, Practices, and Projections" Guest Editor: Kirk St.Amant Texas Tech University Department of English Deadline for Abstracts: October 1, 2005 International outsourcing (or offshoring) has become a topic of increased interest and concern, primarily because of the effects it is having on the nature of knowledge-based work. While a great deal has been written on the effects of international outsourcing in relation to the information technology (IT) and the customer service industries, relatively little has been published on the effects international outsourcing is having on professional communication. Similarly, relatively little has been written on how international outsourcing practices might change the nature of specific technical communication practices or change the field in general. Such perspectives, however, are essential to technical communicators who must re-think the nature of their jobs in an age of global business practices. Additionally, such perspectives are important for educators who train the technical communicators of tomorrow. This special issue will examine how international outsourcing is affecting professional and educational practices in technical communication and how international outsourcing could shape future practices in both areas. TOPICS Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following Which technical fields seem poised to engage in large-scale international outsourcing in the future? What implications will such outsourcing have for professional and technical communication in related industries? What professional or technical communication tasks or practices are particularly susceptible to international outsourcing?
