modest correction in CFP for e-games

Charlie Breindahl has helpfully caught and pointed out a bothersome problem in the CFP for a special issue on e-games recently posted to this list, namely, in the sentence: For example, are concerns with illicit sexuality in games primarily only an issue for U.S. (puritanical) parents, while European parents are more concerned about violence, while parents in Asian countries are concerned about Š? The "Š" is an interesting and suggestive machine "translation" of "..." in the original file. The point was to simply ask, what do parents in Asian countries worry about with regard to their children playing e-games (if anything) - not to assert that they worry about Š. And what might "Š" mean? I'm sure it means something - but my mind boggles at the possibilities. Suggestions welcome - and apologies for the problem and any confusion it may have caused. Dear AoIR-ists, I was privileged to serve as a resource person for an IRB training event yesterday at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio), as organized by their Office for Research Compliance (thanks to Denise Turso and Christian LaMantia for their kind invitation). In open-source style, I've now posted the obligatory PowerPoint slides as well as a references/resource list on the web - to be found at <http://www.drury.edu/ess/CASEWR/IRB.htm> If you have time and interest in browsing through, you'll see some familiar names - including our very own Caroline Haythornthwaite, Jeremy Hunsinger, Elizabeth Buchanan, Mark Johns - even Steve Jones! Beyond the quotable quotes from Mark and Steve - Elizabeth Buchanan was kind enough to share a sample protocol for IRBs looking at Internet research, and Caroline Haythornthwaite was equally generous with elements from her forthcoming article (co-authored with Susan Shoemaker) in the second AoIR Research Annual. As always, comments and suggestions welcome. in particular, I was struck by one of the comments made by IRB members vis-à-vis my characterization of human subjects protections as pursued in the States as focusing solely on individual subjects - in contrast with the Norwegian guidelines which require protection of confidentiality, anonymity, etc., for both the research subject _and_ his/her web of close relationships. They were insistent that they as IRB members likewise worried about the latter. Any comments and suggestions on pursuing that aspect of IRB review? The Teesonline e-mock elections are hosted by the Community Informatics Research and Applications Unit (CIRA) based at the University of Teesside. It is a non-partisan web-based virtual constituency with space for the main political parties to post their policies, interact with an electorate of young people and compete in an e-election. The constituency covers the Tees Valley and its North Yorkshire and Durham hinterland. The young people will decide the different areas that they want to discuss and a number of representatives from the three major parties will be meeting the young people online to answer their questions and listen to their concerns. The young people will be invited to vote for their party of choice on a daily basis with the final 'winning' vote taking place on Friday, 29th April. Hello Allan, The question you raise was, among others, one of those I tried to answer in my PhD on "Semantics of users' paths through the Web", so it might help you. It was based on user-centric traffic data collected by on-computer probes at home, for 3400 people for jan-oct 2002 and 600 people for jan 2000 - oct 2002. You can get it at this address : http://thomas.beauvisage.free.fr/publis.en.php but except the abstrat, it is in French... So shortly, for your precise question: I observed that for the 34-months panel, on average, for 100 sites visited by individual over the 34 months, 75% appear only in one session, while 1.5 % appear in more than 40% of his sessions. The one-visit sites appear all along the internauts' "life on the Net", which means they continuously view sites that they will never visit again. These sites occure mainly in long, complex sessions (avg. 42% of one's all sessions), containing unusual thematics or services for the user, where search engines are over-represented. On the contrary, they hardly appear in sessions dedicated to frequently revisited sites ; in this context, it consists in following a pointer from a well-known site to discovering a new site, as a kind of "step-aside" movement in a straight Web path. All detailed information and calculus, as well as classification of Web sessions on the basis of their contents and on personnal web territories, can be found in the PhD thesis. this conference keeps building ... david *** CALL FOR PAPERS International Conference on CULTURAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION (CATaC'06) 28 June - 1 July 2006 University of Tartu, Estonia http://www.it.murdoch.edu.au/catac Conference theme: Neither Global Village nor Homogenizing Commodification: Diverse Cultural, Ethnic, Gender and Economic Environments The biennial CATaC conference series continues to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of current research on how diverse cultural attitudes shape the implementation and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The conference series brings together scholars from around the globe who provide diverse perspectives, both in terms of the specific culture(s) they highlight in their presentations and discussions, and in terms of the discipline(s) through which they approach the conference theme. The 1990s' hopes for an "electronic global village" have largely been shunted aside by the Internet's explosive diffusion. This diffusion was well described by Marx - all that is solid melts into air - and was predicted by postmodernists. The diffusion of CMC technologies quickly led to many and diverse internets. A single "Internet", whose identity and characteristics might be examined as a single unity, has not materialised. An initially culturally and gender homogenous Internet came more and more to resemble an urban metropolis. Along the way, in the commercialization of the Internet and the Web, "cultural diversity" gets watered down and exchanges strong diversity for a homogenous interchangeability. Such diversity thereby becomes commodified and serves a global capitalism that tends to foster cultural homogenization. CATaC'06 continues our focus on the intersections of culture, technology, and communication, beginning with an emphasis on continued critique of the assumptions, categories, methodologies, and theories frequently used to analyse these. At the same time, CATaC'06 takes up our characteristic focus on ethics and justice in the design and deployment of CMC technologies. We particularly focus on developing countries facilitated by "on the ground" approaches in the work of NGOs, governmental agencies, etc., in ways that preserve and foster cultural identity and diversity. By simultaneously critiquing and perhaps complexifying our theories and assumptions, on the one hand, and featuring "best practices" approaches to CMC in development work, on the other hand, CATaC'06 aims towards a middle ground between a putative "global village" and homogenizing commodification. Such middle ground fosters cultural diversity, economic and social development, and more successful cross-cultural co! mmunication online. Original full papers (especially those which connect theoretical frameworks with specific examples of cultural values, practices, etc.) and short papers (e.g. describing current research projects and preliminary results) are invited. Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to: - Culture isn't 'culture' anymore - The Internet isn't the 'Internet' anymore - Gender, culture, empowerment and CMC - CMC and cultural diversity - Internet research ethics - Ethics and justice - Cultural diversity and e-learning Our conference themes provide a range of approaches to the questions raised. I was wondering whether you could suggest any review articles you might happen to know on the theory of social worlds (as elaborated by Strauss, Becker, Fujimura etc.) not necessarily only in the particular context of STS, Internet studies, information technologies, open source etc. but perhaps in a more general sociological setting. As far as it is a review article surveying a variety advances made in the theory of social worlds it would fit to what I'm looking for.
