* * * Please Forward * * * ======================= Announcing the Launch of the Internet Governance Project www.InternetGovernance.org ======================= We are pleased to announce the launch of the Internet Governance Project (IGP), a multi-university partnership to analyze global Internet policy issues. IGP's research agenda is closely related to the on-going United Nations' review of Internet Governance. IGP's member institutions include two research centers at Syracuse University: - The Convergence Center at the School of Information Studies - The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at the Maxwell School and one research center at the Georgia Institute of Technology: - The Internet and Public Policy Project (IP3) at the School of Public Policy As its first project IGP is providing the United Nations' Information and Communication Technologies Task Force (UN ICT TF) a detailed analysis of global policy regimes. The resulting study will provide a fact-based "map" of existing global rules for the Internet and the institutions that make those rules. media literacy debate

Dear colleagues, I'd like to invite you to a public debate entitled, 'Who needs media literacy?' being held in London on 28 July from 6:00-7:30. The aim of the debate will be to generate a dialogue between researchers the policy-makers who are responsible for this area. How do researchers define media literacy, and what do they know about it? How does media literacy develop, and how can it best be promoted or taught? And what do policy-makers need to know about media literacy? The session will be introduced by David Buckingham (Institute of Education), and will feature short presentations from three of the leading keynote speakers from the conference: Henry Jenkins (MIT), Mizuko Ito (University of Southern California) and Sonia Livingstone (LSE). These will be followed by brief responses from policy-makers: Cary Bazelgette (bfi), Robin Blake (Ofcom) and Sylvia Hines (BBC). There will then be an opportunity for dialogue and debate among the audience. The event will take place at the Institute of Education’s Logan Hall, Bedford Way, London WC1, and will be followed by a drinks reception. It will be open to the public as well as to delegates at the ‘Digital Generations’ conference (which runs from 26th-29th July). ‘Digital Generations: Children, Young People and New Media’ is a major international conference, bringing together over 200 researchers from more than 35 countries. [Please circulate far and wide] Next month, Toronto hosts the annual conference for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (http://www.aejmc.org/) . As part of the pre-conference hoopla, the Canadian Newspaper Association and the Public Journalism Network (http://www.pjnet.org) has organized an afternoon-long workshop which I'll be moderating. We'll be talking about blogging and how it can inform ideas about participatory and public journalism. Participants are to include Dan Gillmor, Jeff Jarvis, Rebecca MacKinnon and Jay Rosen. Hi - check out this URL to the Seattle Times. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2001977381_septproject12 e.html It's an article that discusses (very favorably) The September Project, which was conceived and is headed by one of our own, David Silver, and which by now has reached international dimensions, not to forget the 110 libraries in 24 US states that are participating. The September Project's goal is to start "conversation about democracy, citizenship and patriotism" and it certainly has got the news talking. Are there any opinions here on the list? I think this is a wonderful example of cyberactivism that reaches non-cyber worlds. It's not about an American thing. It's about issues that concern all of us, no matter what country we live in.
