Ok, How about: Hello out there.... ? I honestly don't have a clue why I chose 'Hello thread', except maybe trying to avoid more twee collective identities; I also knew I was about to rant so wanted to be very clear that I was bemused by that specific thread, not by this generally rather interesting list. I suppose in hindsight it's interesting that it's a pretty non-spatial image. Totally agree that usenet type organization of communications is pretty much a thing of the past - it's all much more ephemeral and private conversation for most people. Even when I tried to set up a listserve for my current research team we had to have a think about it - the preference was for using plain old Outlook distribution lists, and storing messages individually. We only chose a listserve in the end because it archives all the emails, but not in threads. I've just started pondering the implications of the lack of interest in websites. Eg, here in Ghana it is all email and chat, plus VOIP. The only web use I come across is educational (finding course and searching for funding); porn; and some shopping (generally with stolen credit card numnbers) and some 'window shopping' on northern goodies. And some use of web for news, either readin glocal newspapers online, or consulting bbc.co.uk or cnn. But 'The Internet' is definitely not the WWW. WWW seems like a kind of adjunct to everything else - if you need some specific info or tool, then you go to the web. They don't know Usenet, associate mailinglists with spam, and visit web-based forums that don't do threading. Of course, it doesn't help that there isn't a good Dutch translation for the word "thread". Frank: You might also look at Plone (http://plone.org) Open source, extremely flexible, allows for nesting and layering of control. Supports wiki, blogs, calendars, and just about everything else because it has a community of programmers that donate to the site. Also, you can run it from Windows, Mac, or Linux. Doesn't take a programmer to learn how to do it all, but it would be helpful to have a programmer involved. They are just about to release a new release that integrates a lot of the things you will want right into the install package. Regards, Kevin W. Frank, the tech people used for our site postnuke: http://sourceforge.net/projects/post-nuke/ see our site at: www.ctie.missouri.edu It is fairly simple to set up, works with PhP and MySql, can manage content quite easily, and has a variety of user rights .... However, to do exactly what we wanted it still needed coding and a fair amount of twicking. If you invest that time then it is fairly simple in the end. There are many add-on features like different discussionboards or calendar ... that can be very easily installed as modules and downloaded from user-sites. There is quite an amount of post-nuke style cms-systems out there as you can see at this list: http://www.opensourcecms.com/ This meta-site also uses post- nuke. We compared quite a bit and were running movable type etc. but found post- nuke the most suitable for our need (a lot of pages needed to be changed by a variety of people). Well, another solution could be tinderbox by Eastgate (commercial): http://www.eastgate.com/Tinderbox/ If you have a Mac, tinderbox is a personal content management system with web- publishing capability and features to integrate your existing blogging systems .... Let me or the list know, what you decided on and your experience with it. Dan >>CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The Workshop on the Sociology and Cultures of Globalization at the University of Chicago proudly presents its sixth annual graduate student conference to be held at the University of Chicago on April 30th and May 1st. This years conference, entitled Mediating Scale: Localizing Transnational Processes, will address the issue of the geographical scales at which global processes manifest and instantiate. The conference is soliciting graduate student papers on topics related to globalization, broadly defined. The annual conference represents a larger effort to build an interdisciplinary focus on critical globalization studies by facilitating a dialogue between graduate students and established scholars in a variety of academic fields. The conference will consist of an opening session on Friday afternoon with a panel discussion with some of the leading scholars on issues of globalization. The primary focus of the conference, however, will be the Saturday presentations of graduate student papers, with the invited scholars serving as discussants for the students papers. hi gang, correct me if I am wrong but didnt Gibson, when he created the word "cyberspace", define it as "a consensual hallucination experienced daily by legitimate operators". So when I refer to anybody "hallucinating" about cyberspace I am indeed being correct as per the true meaning of the word. Cyberspace is, according to the author of the word, an hallucination. To create cyberspace, one hallucinates. Nobody was being insulted, nobody was being ridiculed when I suggested some hallucinate about cyberspace, I was merely describing cyberspace as the author intended. I trust the confusion has now ended. Of course, if some people want to take the word cyberspace and then re-invent its meaning.... well, thats another issue :-) note to Jonathan - I did put forward a project in the online discussion group in one of my internet studies units but it was suggested to me that I might like to keep it under my belt for a post graduate effort. to conclude... I'm sure the famous modern philosopher, Bart Simpson, if asked his opinion on this matter would remark... Dissertation on camgirls online for AoIR folks.

Hi Friends, At the last AoIR Conference, I spoke with some of you about my forthcoming dissertation/book, Camgirls: Gender, Micro-celebrity and Ethics on the World Wide Web. The project is a feminist ethnography of women who use webcams and journals for self-expression/ promotion online. While researching, I also ran a live webcam from my home. Elijah, you wrote that I was coming across as a bit rude, even for an Australian ( whatever that means). If this is so, I apologise although with so many hardened academics in here I hardly think they could offended by anything I would have to say given the challenging environments they work in. Maybe I watch too much TV but isn't academia full of overheated debate, back stabbing and aggressive rivalry? Cant imagine a little mouse like me upsetting people from that environment :-) Anyhow, I won't argue with you as to whether there has been a lot or little number crunching going on or whether academia should be results oriented. I'm sure those arguments go on every day in universities and I'll let the taxpayers of the world worry about the results issue. I should point out, however, that I am no stranger to crunching numbers. For the past decade I have developed a global reputation in a few sports as a statistician who produces interesting and innovative results - results that have been widely published, results that could then be found easily, results that pleased an international audience with far more knowledge of the mechanics of the sport than I possessed. Results produced without concepts, without official "methods", but produced efficiently and by being relevant the statistics earnt myself an international reputation. I have designed web pages for the worlds largest single sport website, created globally accepted statistical rankings, had my statistically backed theories published in official sports annual journals and been quoted widely and used as a source in daily newspapers,TV and radio in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In my field of online sports statistics I was a world leader. I am no stranger to numbers, no stranger to getting from point A to B in a straight line and no stranger to being relevant. And it is my goal to produce relevant results in the field of Internet Research, without conceptualising/ hallucinating, without using geek speak, but producing results that are efficient, able to be understood by every English speaking person on the planet and published widely by the media for the benefit of the public - and my results will be relevant. That may be a brash Australian attitude, but its the only one I know and Im sure every Texan on the list would understand it !!
