CfP IAMCR Pre-conference : Approaches to digital platforms from Latin America and other margins Social mediation, market structures, labour relations and sovereign alternatives

Dears, The general theme – digital platforms as new structures of social mediation – refers to an epochal transition in the structure of social mediation from the Culture Industry of the second half of the 20th Century, based on broadcasting and other cultural sectors, such as cinema or the music industry, to the new cultural global system based on the Internet. Digital platforms constitute the present configuration of this new global system, a consequence of the processes of concentration and centralization of capital after the 2000’ dot-com crisis. Technological mediation is understood as a dialectical process of regulation of social relations in the sectors where these agents are inserted (Valente, 2021). Compared to the previous structure, it is more comprehensive, affecting the various areas of social life. As platform studies have shown, these agents, essentially American, constitute various forms of power (Khan, 2017), combining technological, economic, political, and cultural, in a scenario of precarious regulation and reinforcing their dominance in the sectors where they operate, deepening inequality between people and countries, in a scenario of capitalist crisis. The pre-conference will discuss the impacts of the development of digital platforms, considering the ensemble of these changes and the centrality of the new global system of culture in economic, political and cultural terms. For our purposes, three themes that constitute the basic methodological model of the Brazilian Political Economy of Communications (PEC) analysis will be discussed: (1) in the core level, the problem of labour, which is related to the forms of value production involved in them, the work in the production of the platforms and the labour mediated by the platforms; (2) in the microeconomic level, the relations between market structures and the strategies of relevant actors in different countries; (3) in the macro-social level, the problem of sovereign responses, considering regulation, governance, the development of public policies and community alternatives. Each theme will be discussed in one working shift, from the critical perspective of the PEC. The question will be addressed by Latin American researchers who are members of the Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture (PEICC) group of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the project "The economic governance of digital networks: towards an analysis of Internet markets and competition and their impact on users' rights". Latin America has a long tradition of analyses on the relationship between technology, development, and domination (Dussel, 1984). On the other hand, there are also struggles around sovereignty, which have been updated to confront the current scenario of the platforms. This pre-conference is related to the theme of decolonization proposed by IAMCR 2024. This problem will range from diagnosing the current situation to proposing measures and updating the perspective of praxis that characterizes the PEC. It will enable the debates to be shared with dozens of other group and researchers. The methodology will allow the audience to contribute, diversifying the views. Within the framework of INTERMAPS <https://www.upf.edu/web/intermaps> project, a new digital open-access and free tool has been developed: www.reliefmaps.upf.edu<http://www.reliefmaps.upf.edu/>. It includes a visual way of collecting data on intersectional positions, based on the apple metaphor, and a new interactive model for the Relief Maps. Moreover, it offers a GIS tool designed to combine textual narratives, points and areas with geographic coordinates and places with unknown or more vague locations to capture the complex qualities of place and scale in relation to the lived experience of intersectional inequalities. About our speaker Maria Rodó-Zárate<https://www.upf.edu/web/maria-rodo> is professor at the Political and Social Sciences Department. She is graduated in Political Sciences (UAB), Master in Women, Gender and Citizenship Studies (UB) and PhD in Geography (UAB). Her research focuses on the study of social inequalities from an intersectional, spatial and emotional perspective applied to issues such as the right to the city, gender-based violence or LGBTI-phobia. She is interested in the spatial articulations among social categories such as gender, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age or (dis)ability, and their effects on lived experience. She is currently leading the project INTERMAPS <https://www.upf.edu/web/intermaps> on social inequalities in everyday life and coordinates the research on the effects of anti-gender discourses within the RESIST<https://theresistproject.eu/> project. Hello, The ASA Science Knowledge and Technology Section invites submissions to our two Anti-Racism prizes, awarded by the section. Wells-Troy Duster Award The Science, Knowledge, and Technology Section invites nominations for written scholarship that develops understanding of Black, African American, or Indigenous intersections with science, knowledge, and technology in the spirit of anti-racism. The award honors sociologist Troy Duster (past President of ASA, and mentor to many), and his pathbreaking grandmother Ida B. Wells. Priority will be given to work that, in the tradition of both Wells and Duster, involves pioneering investigation of neglected areas of social injustice. To encourage career development among junior scholars, who are otherwise disadvantaged as applicants for such awards, preference will be given to applicants who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC) and located in non-tenure track positions. Eligible works include work in progress and published articles and chapters of no more than 10,000 words. While this is not a book award, single chapters of a monograph or in an edited volume may be considered. The published works must have publication dates of no more than two years prior to award year (2022 for the 2024 award). The Wells-Duster Award comes with a $500 prize. The nominating statement should include a brief description of the written work that (a) describes the paper, article, or chapter; (b) summarizes how it develops an understanding of Black, African American or Indigenous intersections with STS; and (c) what makes it a pioneering investigation of a neglected area of social injustice. The statement should also briefly describe the nominee’s current position and whether they are BIPOC. Nominations are welcome for creative contributions and work not traditionally recognized in the academy, including mentoring, public engagement through social media/blogs, activist leadership, artistic works including films, and social justice curriculum development. The emancipatory practice award will alternate between non-academic and academic recipients. In even years, nominees should be non-academic, and in odd years, they should be academic. Because this is a call for 2024, the committee invites non-academic nominees. Collective contributions should identify 1-2 leaders to receive the award. In addition to identifying as BIPOC, nominees may be at any career stage or location inside or outside academia. The Emancipatory Practice award comes with a $250 prize. A book on Generative AI in Cuba

Dear colleagues, I wanted to share with you a book that I have just published in Cuba together with two co-authors about Generative AI, with the support of the institute where I work, the Juan Marinello Cuban Cultural Research Institute. In the book, I rely on the concept of social appropriation of technology to promote an ethical, reliable, robust, and sovereign use of the IA. Although it is in Spanish (and I apologize for that), it may be of interest to those with curiosity about how generative AI is being approached from the island, and a little more from the Global South. I also believe that Spanish-speaking researchers who are members of this list may find it interesting. The book is available for free download.
