Recently, however, questions have emerged over the Diebold voting system used across the state. Last summer, university researchers published a report claiming that the voting system is "far below even the most minimal security standards applicable in other contexts." A later Diebold analysis claimed to refute those criticisms, while a report by SAIC drew mixed conclusions. The state of Maryland recently reviewed the Diebold technology and chose to adopt it. This event offers computer scientists, public officials, and industry representatives an opportunity to present their analyses to the Georgia public. It offers a neutral, academic setting for a fact-based discussion of what has become a contentious issue. Att'n Members: 2004 Program Chair

The Association of Internet Researchers has begun planning for its 2004 conference (location to be announced in Toronto). At this time, the executive committees (current and incoming) are preparing to appoint an AoIR member to be the Program Chair. This message is a call for interest. In brief, the duties of the program chair include working with the local host to craft the conference theme and Call For Papers, organizing the reviewing of the conference submissions, notifying submitters of acceptance and rejection, and combining the papers into panels and scheduling them. In essense, the program chair is the 'editor' of the event. It is a big job that requires time, experience, and diplomacy. It is also a fantastic way to discover first hand the breadth and quality of current internet research. If you would like to be considered for program chair, please send me a note to that effect. Include any qualifications you would like us to consider. You should also feel free to let us know if there are others whom you think would do an outstanding job and would like us to consider. If possible, please respond by Tuesday Oct 14th. If you are interested or have a great idea but aren't able to reply by then, seek me out in Toronto or email me when you are able. Thank you! on posting people's email addresses

Hi, I thought I'd throw out a suggestion that when people refer others to someone on this list, could they please not post the email address of the person in its full form? Instead, you can easily tweak the address to say -at- or something else in the place of the @ symbol. According to a study released by the Center for Democracy & Technology last spring, one of the main sources of spam is people's email addresses on Web sites. http://www.cdt.org/speech/spam/030319spamreport.shtml Since AoIR archives are publicly available on the Web, the addresses posted on them can be picked up by spam robots easily. The air-l list admins have kindly masked the email addresses of those sending messages to the list, however, when you post someone's email address in the body of the message it will be available for robots to harvest for spam lists. So PLEASE do take care in posting others' addresses here and any other public space on the Web. Community Informatics: Enabling Communities With Information and Communications Technologies At the Many Voices, Many Places - Electronically Enabling Communities for An Information Society Colloquium http://www.ccnr.net/prato2003/ held at the Monash University Centre in Prato, Italy a group of participants from some 7 countries and representing a variety of universities and research networks agreed to proceed to the creation of a formal Community Informatics Research Network (.Org) (CIRN). There was an agreement by the CIRN Interim Committee of the Whole that the organization would be open to participation and membership by individuals, institutions, for profit and not for profit enterprises and networks, with an active interest and involvement in Community Informatics Research and particularly those from Developing Countries. The approach agreed to was also that this organisation would seek to build a network of the related organizations that for subject, language or other reasons feel more comfortable operating on their own. In other words it would be pro-actively facilitating the formation of a structured open network among CI research groups. An interim executive steering committee consisting of Michael Gurstein, NJIT; Peter Day, U. of Brighton; and Don Schauder, Monash U./Wal Taylor, Central Queensland U., and Larry Stillman of Monash U. as the Interim Secretary/webmaster was formed to work towards the timely incorporation of the group as a not for profit society under the Australian corporations act. In addition, an invitation was extended by Dr. Peter Day and Brighton University to host CIRN's first research conference in the spring of 2004. The Founding conference of CIRN it was agreed, would be hosted by Monash University at the Prato Centre in late September 2004. It was also agreed that the CI Researchers list http://vancouvercommunity.net/lists/ciresearchers would be the e-list for the organization and that a website based on the design developed by CQU would go on line as soon as possible and hosted by Monash U. in conjunction with CQU. Michael Gurstein agreed to provide an interim linkage with the newly created CI Research Network of the Commonwealth of Independent States formed in conjunction with the St. Petersburg (BIC) conference http://communities.org.ru/conference/ Several members of the Interim Committee of the Whole agreed to liase with a variety of other CI research networks and specifically the CRACIN network in Canada and the network which is currently being created in the United States. Birds of a Sociological Feather Flock Next Week

This is a call for all those interested in the sociological side of the Internet to flock together in Toronto on Friday, October 17, 1130-1230. We'll roost at the Barrister's Bar of the Hilton Hotel, University Ave & Queen St. It offers a relaxed lounge environment, good for an informal meet and great with people who share similar interests. The occasion is Internet Research 4.0: the annual meeting of the international and interdisciplinary Association for Internet Researchers. The conference seems like a great opportunity to meet fellow sociologists who are Internet minded. Why at this 1130 time? We don't want to clash with other BOF groups who are meeting at 0800. Moreover, as sociologists, we will surely be out doing participant-observation of the Toronto nightlife to the wee hours beforehand. So, please come visit with your fellow sociologists. Some of us will probably continue out for lunch on the funky Queen Street strip. Dear AIRers: Over the last couple of years a number of scholars have been working with data from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. These collaborators have contributed some of the fruit of their research to a collected edited by Steve Jones and myself, called Society Online: The Internet in Context. We began calling for contributions at AIR 2.0 in Minnesota, and are happy to announce that the collection is ready in time for AIR 4.0 in Toronto. The collection takes a 'spheres of life' approach to organizing the findings of the scholarship (community, politics, economics, culture, global & personal contexts), so it is ideal for senior undergrad classes or as an intro for grads looking to build a reference list on particular themes. Dear AoIR friends, My name is Daniela. I´m a master degree student, on Education in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I´m doing a research on reception/audience in Internet, regarding on line courses. I´ve already looked for this subject on Latin America authors and didn´t find much about it. Actually, the Web is considered one among many others new information and communication technologies and not examined in its specifications. I would love to hear from people on this list that are aware of any group/author researching reception/audience in Internet or, more exactly, about reception & online courses. It will help me a lot.
